By coincidence I took delivery of one of these the same day this was posted. The cross buffing on the ricasso is very common on European swords-sabres, especially for the Diggers. Probably a quick way to aesthetically terminate the final longitudinal polishing of the blade, it not being possible to get a buffing wheel right up to the guard.

Just discovered your channel. I recently got my grandads old bayonets. A 1907 wilkinson and a double ended 1903. I used your videos to take them apart and clean them. Tho they were hella rusty. I have been tempted to touch them up on an old sharpening stone. But would it be better to leave them as it? Cheers.

Definitely better to leave them. Most bayonets were never sharpened to begin with. Even joking about sharpening them would trigger a seasoned bayonet collector. It would definitely lower the value too. Sounds like you have some cool pieces

@@pointynotsharp that is what I thought haha. I absolutely love them. He used to have another, but used it for weeding for so many years it is 4in long lol.

@nathancallcott7749 I love that, those are some of my favourite bayonets. Those that found a civilian life and spent years being used. I had a P1907 that was similar, it had been cut down and used as a hunting knife for 50 years. It certainly had its own character, I regret trading it

@@pointynotsharp I do wish I knew where it was. But it disappeared when they moved. Apparently they were all given to him by an ex soldier when he was a kid.
