Normally, I would tend to agree. But knowing something about phalanopsis having kept them several years. It is clear he has done little to no research this time. If you put these plants in a window, you are likely to burn them with too much light. The color of the roots say nothing to the age of the plant. The expensive one was watered vary close to the time the video was made. The cheaper one was not. I can tell because that's what the color of the roots tell you. Green roots are hydrated and do not need water. The green color slowly fades as that silver white gray color will come back as they dry out and need water. I might edit this if he makes any other large mistakes.

@@victorb145He says light...that doesn't mean direct sunlight. He says in the West or East window.

The roots are silvery when dry and green when moist, also roots vary in thickness depending on the hybrid or species. You are correct about the amount of roots the more the better. Best thing to note with the roots of a phal is if they are desecated (dead from being too dry) or rotted (from being too wet) I do love your videos so not trying to be harsh just didn't want ppl thinking the plant is no good if roots are silvery. Happy New Year! Everything you said was pretty spot on!

hi gina. im kinda new to the orchids thing and i got mine 3 wks ago. Im just not sure if if my phal is healthy, i has a lot of lime green colored roots, at the same time some balckish-shiveled ones. also i noticed that a small leaf growing from the bottom turned yellow...? i hope you can enlighten me. tnx!
@sharonwarner98773 жыл бұрын
Your orchid might not get enough water if you only use enough to not get up to the pot when using gravel in the bottom. Just take the inner pot out and water thoroughly or fertilize and water. This works well at the sink. Then put back in your cover pot and enjoy.
@sharonwarner98773 жыл бұрын
You can easily grow it again and again if you use an orchid fertilizer weakly weekly and keep it in indirect light or an East or west window. I have a few that are 20+ years old. Look up Miss Orchid Girl Utube videos if you want more information.

In my Canadian experience, these orchids come crammed into sphagnum moss such that they need repotting asap. May not be true of expensively-bought orchids, but those we usually find have had a rough time and their (many rotten) roots show it.

I like to purchase some of my orchids from Trader Joe's, and were cheap, but great quality, and never had any problems. I bought several from Home Depot that had two or more spikes with plenty of buds, and again haven't had any problems. I suppose it determines which plants you decide to purchase, or, you just don't know what to look for in first time purchasing! I like purchasing "cheap" orchids!!! Lol

Instead of putting gravel in the bottom of my pot as long as it's heavy enough and won't tip over because the orchid bloom is heavy... I save all kinds of bottle caps and I put them at the bottom of almost all my cache pots... For not only my 70 orchids but also for my hundreds of houseplants. No house plant likes to sit in water no Orchid likes to sit in water I don't know any plant that likes to sit in water unless you're trying to make a cutting from a plant and have it rooting in water.... I feel like I'm saving a little bit of plastic out of the landfill! Also when I make my big outdoor pots it takes too much soil to fill those pots and The Roots don't go to the bottom of those huge 10 or 20 gallon pots on the patio. I used to listen to Ralph snodsmith on the radio decades ago he had a gardening show on Sunday... And he said save those plastic peanuts and put it your bottom of the pot to save the expense of all that potting soil. You might even add a couple rocks to keep it from being top-heavy. So now I save water bottles and other plastic containers squeeze and shut put the lid back on and put them at the bottom of the pot for drainage and to save on buying potting soil. My cannas and my elephant ears make my patio beautiful grow very well in these containers

I received an orchid from Grocery Store--A gift from a friend actually. --Phalaenopsis. I am so new with orchids. I took it out of the pot and the roots were covered in this spongy mossy type stuff which looked like it was ruining the roots. I took as much of that stuff off as possible. Some would not come off because the roots really stuck to it. I took some lava rocks that I got from a neighbor and a clay pot with holes on the side and bottom. I watered it first with tap water. and placed them in the sunniest window I could find but not too sunny where they would burn. I have been able to put it out side and get some nice sun and warmth (70-80F) . I have drenched/soaked it a couple of times as well in Distilled water (2-3 days apart). I have been checking the roots and they seem to be going through a dying phase because they look dry and shriveled and some browning. I trimmed away the roots that look dead. Still using the Lava rock. Wondering what I am doing wrong. The remaining roots feel hardened and stiff and greenish to pale white. Are the roots drying out too fast? Should I drench and soak more often like everyday? Should I switch to pea size gravel? I do see another flower spike climbing up along the side of leaves. Don't want to lose anymore roots (barely has any now...) Don't want to lose spike. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Much. Mark
