Heartbreaking song in all truth. A broken father saying his goodbyes to his loved daughter. In as much as Sweeney is a monster it is only because of society cruel ways that he is twisted into a Demon. Once a loving husband & devoted father reduced to the base animal of revenge. I feel these songs as individual tears of a weeping world.

@Michael O Callaghan Todd was aware he'd die sooner of later. He even said in the song about "A Priest", that everyone deserves to die. Even Miss Lovett and him. In a way, he knew that when all was done, there'd be no chance for him to continue to live. This song is him simply saying goodbye to his chance of reuniting with his beloved daughter which is the more upsetting.

I watched this movie for the first time and I couldn't get over two things: 1) Jamie Campbell Bower is an AMAZING singer 2) There are exactly five characters from Harry Potter in this film Edit: I never compared the films - I gave my observations and you gave me opinions, positive or negative. That doesn't discredit the fact that attacking people over an opinion is wrong! Opinions aren't facts and don't affect you, which means you need to cool it, people.

luisnumba10 I feel the same. I think about the part he sings when the man with his family is there. "If only angels could prevail, we'd be the way we were, Johanna." Yes, there's some pragmatic villainy there. Too risky killing a man in the presence of witnesses. But at the same time, I can't help but think he also let him go because he didn't have to the heart to destroy a family like the kind he'd always wanted, but never got. Like seeing a small glimpse of the man he could have been if Turpin hadn't ruined his family and Todd hadn't sought vengeance.

At the time meat was expensive and they needed a way to dispose of the bodies without raising too much suspicion. Given Todd's resolve that the world had destroyed his life, he was all too happy to destroy theirs and shove it in their naive and happy faces.

The fact of the matter is that the character started in a Penny Dreadful and made it to plays and evolved from there. As originally conceived he was simply a villain. The humanizing elements came later and teach their peak with the musical genius that is Stephen Sondheim.

@@valentinoproductions1940 annoying? Maybe, but it's symbolic. His wife is singing along with him. He's referring to all her beautiful qualities, and then she comes in looking nothing like his description. It's such a dark addition, and the singing isn't supposed to be "nice" per say, but make you feel disturbed, and off-put. She did well if you don't like her singing. Todd couldn't even be bothered by looking at her, and just offed her without thought. So ironic really.

I am listening to this while shaving. Fortunately, not with a straight razor. Also, cutting somebody's neck is easy. Cutting it deep enough to be serious is difficult. The human body is extremely resilient. The same effect can be achieved much easier by breaking their neck. In fact, fatally snapping someone's neck is far easier than slashing their throat the way Sweeney did it in the film. And it's far less messy, too. A person who has studied anatomy would be best at slitting throats.

TheNotverysocial that's not too true, I shave with a straight razor and you could cut into the windpipe of a human very, very easily. minimal effort. In fact, I was once shaving and lost my focus and coughed mid neck-pull, and sliced my Adams apple. Keep the focus.
@TheNotverysocial8 жыл бұрын
That's true. Yet making the fatal cut requires you cut in the right place with the right force, and even then, it's far from immediate. The same effect is much easier achieved by breaking the neck than by cutting it.
