Oh and not to mention those higher octaves that really stand out from the guitar. Bass is a fuckin' beast. Dont have to be a music prodigy but do need to know music theory to stand out.

He's definitely one of my favorites. His tone is perfect. His attack is very consistent, and his timing is impeccable. He knows how to pace every song with satisfying fills. He uses octaves and slides so well. His riffs are groovy as hell. People describe him as punk bassist playing funk. I like that description, especially when you consider songs like Mr. Brownstone, Michelle, Jungle, etc. Very pfunky.

It's very interesting to just listen to one single piece of a song which you have heard a few thousand times before. Puts things in a different perspective while it helps you gain some music theory knowledge. Duff's bass play is such an important element for this song, laying a very decent groundwork for the other musicians to add their own part for this whole thing to become a rock masterpiece.

Sometimes obviously just used for the sharper or brighter sound. Sometimes it's a pain when bands, songs or certain musicians use a very specific tuning. The Jar of Flies EP by AIC has something like that for the bass D# but a bit higher. Especially a bit more work when you're trying to pull off a 1:1 sound.
