Another fine classic from guitar wizard Danny Gatton! It is a treat to hear him on the more acoustic guitar and doing this old jazz tune. Warning; the tempo speeds up super fast half way through and Danny is picking at light speed! R.I.P.

I buried my grandfather today. That's neither here nor there to anyone reading this. But it puts me in the mindset to remember, and miss terribly, those who have left us. Danny, thanks for the music. May you rest in peace. And thanks, John Boda, for posting this.

I used to do my single country act between Danny's sets at the Desperado's and the Gardens next to U. of M. When it was time for the guys to get back up, they would back me on one tune. Greatest thrill of my life! He was a great guy!

Danny was a monster on guitar, words cannot describe. I saw him twice. Once at the Cat Club in NYC where he brought out a 12 year old Joe Bonamassa; and another time at The Cubby Bear in Chicago. Both shows were mind-boggling simply because as you are watching Danny play you can't fathom how anyone could become so proficient at so many different styles. I was so blown away I couldn't contain myself at these shows. This was a time when I had the lucky pleasures to also see SRV live many times and Buddy Guy and other greats but pure musicality and technical difficulty and attitude went to Gatton hands down. Similar in a way to Roy Clark, but like if Roy Clark, Buckethead, Les Paul, Chet Atkins and SRV had a baby.

sherriffofhongkong BINGO, Lenny is the Einstein of guitar, Scotty a picking machine, Wes best jazz and unlimited choruses, Django best improvisor, but GATTON is the most overwhelming, mind boggling; ultimate electric soloist in history bar none ...

This looks to me like "The Birchmere" in Arlandria VA. Saw him there with Emmy Lou Harris and John Hartford they were performing together and I got there early so I could sit right at the front of the stage. Singing along with most songs. Hartford hands me the mic for the whole second verse and chorus of "Up on the Hill" ( where they do the boogie ). When they took a break they gestured on their way down off the stage to come over. Of course I couldn't move fast enough, when I got there Emmy Lou Harris gave me a kiss on my cheek and I didn't wash it for 2 weeks. Nevertheless it was the thrill of my life at that time

There are many great guit-fiddlers, but there are only a few that tower above the rest of the great player in terms of technical ability, fluidity, originality....Django, Jimmy Bryant, Wes Montgomery, Johnny Smith and of course, Danny. Thanks for posting this.

cattleprods911 And also Lenny Breau and Scotty Anderson; after those Grandmasters the next group would be John Williams, Julian Breem, Tal Farlowe, Joe Pass, Bola Sete,Jeff Beck,SRV,Allan Holdsworth,Pat Martino,George Bensen,Hank Garland,Emily Remler, Chet,Steve Morse, and Eric Johnson.

cattleprods911 Good comments; but you could also add LennyBreau, Scotty Anderson.; With several honarable mentions; Hank Garland, Tal Farlowe, Joe Pass, Bola Sete, John Williams, Julian Bream, Chet, Jeff Beck, SRV, Steve Morse, Eric Johnson, Doyle Dykes. I've studied all the guitar greats for decades and have probably studied more audio and video material of Danny Gatton than ANYBODY on planet earth ; Jay knows...

Since a little ways down the comments list people are listing some of their favorite players, I'll go slight off topic and add a few of mine.... for Tele plank-spankers, don't forget Arlen Roth and Duke Levine.....for rootsy rock and reggae and world music there's Ry Cooder and David Lindley.....for fingerstyle folk, blues and Celtic stuff it doesn't get much better than Martin Simpson......the only shredder I listen to regularly is Steve Morse.... for marrying great songwriting with great picking (or great touring bands) you've got Richard Thompson, and John Hiatt.....and for sheer individualism and musical vision and pushing the boundaries of slide guitar beyond any previous stretch of imagination, I nominate Sonny Landreth. He ought to be as famous as Hendrix in my opinion! Ps I almost forgot to mention Dave Hole, another outrageous slide player, but Sonny is in a class of his own for sure...

Danny got some tribute from the Hot Club peoples around. I know why, when I see this video. He was really fast. I first hear or read about him in a guitarplayer magazine and got his first HOT LICKs video signed by him. I think his guitar tech Jay Montrose plays with him on this video. Thanks!

No tricks. Just a guitar to an amp. How in the world was he not considered faster than the shredders? Malmsteen would quit if he walked on stage. Watch Albert Lee and Vince Gill make sure that his Tele is turned down so low that you can't hear him. Everyone that has seen Danny play live knows that he cranked the amp all the way up all the time. If you only have two lessons in your life, exactly how is this possible?
