"Sweet Like This" - Tuba Skinny

Within two days of posting this there are 6 inquires in the comments about where is Erika. This happens in every video. The answer can easily be found on Tuba Skinny's FAQ web page, as it has been since she left 5 years ago. But to hopefully prevent any more questions about Erika I will post this brief explanation and not personally respond to any more questions about her whereabouts: Erika moved from New Orleans about 5 years ago. She now has a 3 year old son and lives in North Carolina. She had surgery on her thyroid gland last autumn but is said to be recovering well with no damage to her voice. Erika continues to sing with her own country music band, The Lonesome Doves, and still sings with Tuba Skinny during festivals in New Orleans and when they are on their summer tour.

The Verse (played only once) is a 12-bar blues. 00:05 INTRODUCTION - 4 bars 00:16 CHORUS 1 - played Ensemble 00:49 CHORUS 2 - led by Barnabus but with delicate support from Shaye and Craig 01:21 signal - Shaye's finger tells them she wants to switch to the Verse next 01:23 VERSE - Shaye plays the 12 bars, with plunger mute and support from Craig over the final 5 bars 01:50 CHORUS 3 - Craig solos 02:26 CHORUS 4 - Max solos (note Robin desists from playing, to leave the sweet solo in full focus) 03:00 CHORUS 5 - Shaye trades twos with Todd, until leaving him to play bars 13 - 16 by himself 03:32 signal - Shaye twirls the cornet to indicate she wants a full ensemble Chorus 03:37 CHORUS 6 - Ensemble, with strong rallentando over the final two bars.

There are several versions on KZbin of them playing this tune. But I think this is easily the best. They have kept it simple, quiet and delicate; but in some of the other versions they weren't quite getting the tempo right. Also, in those earlier versions, they usually played five disparate, random, mechanical choruses, sometimes spoiled by unnecessary tricks, such as strong patterns from the rhythm instruments; but in this performance they play six homogeneous unpretentious choruses that blend into a perfect work of art.

Pops, what was interesting about this set to me was that I could hear the band discussing what to play next and it is obvious that they did not have a set list they stuck too. After a tune someone would suggest what to play next or Shaye would ask for a suggestion. If you listen closely at the beginning of the video you can hear Shaye's comment after someone suggested this tune, "I would love to play 'Sweet Like This'". So this tune and most of the others were played extemporaneously.

Interesting, James; and it shows in the order and nature of events, which this time worked out so perfectly. The solos are delicate and well crafted, support for them is sympathetically quiet; and the 'trading twos' is something they don't normally do with this tune.

Thanks Mark. I have better equipment now than when I did the earlier videos. Trial and error has improved my technique but I am still learning. It also helps that the band tries to accommodate me while filming as long as I don't get in their way.

Erika se mudó de Nueva Orleans hace unos 5 años. Ahora tiene un hijo de 3 años y vive en Carolina del Norte. Se sometió a una cirugía en la glándula tiroides el otoño pasado, pero se dice que se está recuperando bien y sin daños en la voz. Old!? Craig is 60ish I believe, Barnabus is in his 40's, but Shaye and rest are still in their 30's. You must be a teenager if you think they are old. Old is in the eye of the beholder. I'll be 73 my next birthday so none of the band appear old to me!!

@@JamesSterling As luck would have it, they keep making new fans. Hence the questions. I only discovered them about 18 months ago, because I caught the Slick Skillet Serenaders at d.b.a. KZbin suggestions led me here. I was 48 hours from leaving to catch TS at Abita when the pandemic derailed my plans. I love them, and WILL make it there now that i am vaccinated. Sure, I would love to see Erika, but the rest of the gang will be there. Soon, I hope.

I discovered Tuba Skinny similarly 6 years ago while searching for Pete Fountain videos, saw the recommendation box to the right, clicked on it, and it changed my life. Dozens of trips to New Orleans to see Tuba Skinny, discovered other wonderful bands and musicians, became friends with some of them and have met people from all over the world who share our passion.

Stefano, Erika moved away from New Orleans 3-4 years ago. She re-joins the band on tours and for big events in New Orleans like JazzFest. Erika is a great part of the band. Even still, Tuba Skinny is fantastic even when Erika cannot be with them.
