Harvesting Garnet sweet potatoes plus garden tips (not Beauregard). Watch to the end for how-to make the grow bed. The soil mix by measure: 1/3 peat moss (fluffed), 1/3 coarse vermiculite, 1/3 is a mixture of 4-5 different quality composts and I also add a little complete organic "compost"/fertilizer called Revita Pro which is sea kelp, humate, feather meal, bone meal and sulfate of potash

It's like uncovering ancient Egyptian artifacts the way you have to dig around the soil and not break them and just pull them up like regular potatoes. I'm going to try for the 1st time this Spring to plant sweet potatoes in Connecticut.

Thank you so much for sharing your harvest! It was satisfying to watch you pull up those beautiful sweet potatoes. The irregular shaped potatoes that you mentioned, looked as if a cluster of potatoes fused together. I don't even know if that is possible. Just what it looked like from my view. Thank you for sharing how to build the bed and the soil. I look forward to growing next year. Blessings from Texas!

Thank you for watching. It may have looked like they were fused, but most were normal. The very large ones had a top shape with sort of lobes. I do not know what caused that, maybe fused?

It's really cool to see people growing their own food. It would be great if more people acquired this habit. In addition to improving our health by consuming healthier foods, we contribute to preserving our planet by reducing the use of pesticides. It’s a little work since your raised beds are full of planting medium already but you should line the bottom of your raised bed with hardware cloth then add your soil on top of the hardware cloth. This is a guaranteed mole/vole prevention from burrowing up from the bottom.

If your beds are deep enough, you can line the bottom of the beds with large ceramic tiles. They're only a few dollars each at Lowe's. Just lay them down in the shape of your bed before putting down your blocks. Space the tiles with about 1/4" between each tile. Lay your blocks on top of the edge of the tile so nothing can get around it. The feeder roots should mostly be able to grow around the tile and still push pretty deep.

BEAUTIFUL CROP!!! I wonder if you put ground garlic in the soil, will the rodents still come to eat the potatoes. I know when I grew ONIONS nothing touched them, but the gophers in California demolished my cabbage and broccoli. A friend on mines grew beautiful tomatoes and she used garlic in soil to stop the gophers from eating them.. I think most rodents don't like the pungent odor of onions and garlic. Blessings

Oh my goodness how absolutely wonderful for you that your harvest was so amazing .Well done I'm so impressed .we don't grow them in the uk but I'm wondering if we might be able to . I have very good garden soil with a lorry load of 4 year old composted tree cuttings and added to that I have Bay.holly.sycamore clippings and 5 tonnes of farm compost organic plus 26 years of built up kitchen and garden composted mix . I had chickens and my neighbour had rabbits and I have about 6 years worth mixed in with the garden soil . I had an accident and cannot dig my garden now as my right leg had completely severed quadriceps but I have hundreds of old victorian bricks and hope to build raised beds to grow in as sadly somebody keeps stealing my buckets that I grow my vegetables in . I have never seen such good looking sweet potatoes .I'm going to try next spring and also butter nut squash and pumpkin 🎃 would laying chicken wire mesh help prevent rodent damage ? I have a lot of squirrels and wood pigeons
@LeslieCaza
@LeslieCaza Жыл бұрын
First of all, I am very sorry to hear that someone steals your buckets of growing vegetables. I'd be praying about a solution for that, and maybe raised beds are the answer. It sounds like you have some very nice growing materials there! Sweet potatoes like it hot and need about 100 days. I plant my sweet potato slips about 1 month after the last frost date for our area and then harvest at about 100 days, which is about 1 month before our first frost date. Sweet potatoes need to come out before frost. I'm not sure if chicken wire has small enough holes to keep out voles and mice. At this point, the sweet potatoes are the only crop that is bothered by rodents (I gave up growing corn because the squirrels are crazy about it!). The last 2 years have had such abundant harvests that I'm not too worried at this point. But that could certainly change! Thank you for watching, commenting, and suggesting an option. I have the best viewers!

Thank you for watching. Actually they are Garnet sweet potatoes. My mistake in the video. Planted about 12 slips. The drip system is no longer available as far as I know. I did mulch with a thin layer of chopped leaves, mainly to help the plants when first transplanted. Once the leaves grow it makes its own living mulch. Thank you for watching. God bless you too!
