As a New Yorker, I can't tell you how much I adore this movie. Few movies have ever captured the allure, the greed, the raw ambition, the talent that fuels New York. And as a jazz lover, few movies have ever done a better job of weaving the jazz scene into the plot of the movie. (One of the protagonists is the jazz guitarist shown in this clip.) This is classic movie making at its very best - a true tour de force and the best movie that Curtis and Lancaster ever made.

I may be 4 years late, but, I have the answers. June 2011.Pete Condoli, trumpet. Ted Nash, alto. Lloyd Ulyate, trombone.Shelley Manne, drums.Armand Kaproff, cello. Dave Frisina, violin. Martin Ruderman, flute. Gordon Schoneberg, oboe. Mitchell Lurie, clarinet.Jack Marsh, bassoon. John Crown, piano. Lee Perrin, timpani. Johnny Williams, piano. These guys did all the playing at different points in the movie, some, of course, in this segment. I am the man.

@Beck19781 His manager is called D'Angelo in the film too. Not much of an in-joke, so it must be a coincidence!

@Beck19781 fair point! and obviously the maker's name had to be hidden anyway to give martin milner an easier time finger-syncing.

@@recordguy4321 -- You probably know this: Milner's right hand, playing the notes on the fretboard, was actually the hand of a professional guitarist, hidden behind Milner.

@campocat -- fake jazz, in the words of Donal Fagen. All I know is the score was written by Elmer Bernstein

You mean 'Donald Fagen' of Steely Dan? Fake jazz? Explain.
