+Shani Black I've got bad news for you - that is not her singing - the producer and directer didn't like her voice. They auditioned many people for to voice over this scene with Lauren singing and finally ended up using a 14 year old Andy Williams. I think you may of heard of a few songs by Andy (especially near Christmas).

qq kk, bad news for you: the filmmakers of _To Have and Have Not_ did like Bacall's singing enough to include it in the film. Andy Williams was either lying or misremembering.

qq kk You must have a tin ear! Anyone who has heard Andy Williams sing every week on tv like I did when I was a child would know that is not his voice singing that song! Secondly anyone who has an ear and has seen every movie and interview that Lauren Bacall ever made like I have can tell you that it is her singing that song!

@Jack K they love it. Even as a soprano (my voice only goes higher and higher if I let it) I used to do a deep chest voice as a teenager and just watched all the guys at school get flushed. I cannot guarantee if this is accurate information, but I've read somewhere that they find it sexy. That being said, sweet and more high pitched voices are also delightful - so, as a person who has tried both, I think it all comes down to other's personal preference. But we should all love who we are, no matter what kind of voice we've got. They're all genuinely amazing: soprano, mezzo, alto for women or tenor, baritone and bass for men ^^ and you will find out that if you love what you've got, others will love it too! ❤️

The most legendary person in this scene is not Bogart or Bacall but is in fact the piano player. It's the iconic Hoagy Carmichael who wrote such timeless songs as Georgia on My Mind, As Time Goes By, Stardust, In the Cool Cool Cool of the Evening ... and so many more.
@Carlos-dy4jh
@Carlos-dy4jh 3 жыл бұрын
"As time goes by" was written and composed by Herman Hupfeld. Nevertheless, I agree with the fact Hoegy Charmichael is a legend, not as known as he deserve. "Stardust" and "Hearts and soult" are eternal songs.

I was able to share my convo with my gramps who lived in Brooklyn when I visited him and he loved the stories. He was responsible for me watching and falling in love with classic films. One of my favs. I’ve watched this movie many times recently, thanks TCM 😀. I was smitten by Lauren, watching while knowing she was only 19 years old. The first time I watched this movie, I had her for 30 or 35 years old. She seems so mature. Her relationship with Bogie was only 12 years, that is sad. Cigarettes kill so many people, Bogie looked good smoking them, but 57 yrs old is ridiculous.

Andy Williams was the subject of enduring curiosity for one of his earliest forays into screen work. At 16, he was asked to dub Lauren Bacall’s voice in the song “How Little We Know” fin “To Have and Have Not” (1944). Bacall and director Howard Hawks denied that the final cut included Mr. Williams’s voice. “I really wish, now, it had never happened, because now when people ask me if that’s my voice on the screen I have to compromise and say ‘maybe,’ ” he told the Tulsa World in 2000.

Maybe it happens this way; Maybe we really belong together but after all, how little we know. Maybe it's just for a day, love is as changeable as the weather but after all; how little we know. Who knows why an April breeze never remains, it starts in the trees and then it fades. Love comes along, to stay a spell, will it sing you a song, will it say you farewell. WHo can tell. Maybe you're meant to be mine, maybe I'm only supposed to stay in your arms awhile ... As others have done.

According to Idbm, director Howard Hawks said Andy Williams did sing it in case Bacall wasn't up to it, but the version we hear is all Bacall.

A persistent rumor states that Andy Williams, while a teenager, provided the dubbed singing voice of Lauren Bacall for her song "How Little We Know" in the movie To Have and Have Not. Bacall herself addressed it in her autobiography, stating that Williams did dub a couple of high notes for her, not the whole song.

omg she is so beautiful! Her hair, her clothes, her face, her poise, everything! This is how a woman is supposed to look! Notice how simple yet chich and form fitting the clothes are, and how natural the makeup is. And her hair is complimentary, and that sultry voice of hers is a turn on! Man, I wish I lived through this era. Couples were probably very romantic back then. Call me old fashioned but I really prefer a lover like Lauren Bacall; just smooth and sultry, classy and romantic.
