I was at a show and some young punks were arguing with the owner of a hot rod with a flathead telling him it wasn’t a v8 and it was instead a v6 just because of the exhaust manifolds. Lol.

@@aurktman1106 I bought a 53 Ford with the flathead engine! It has 53K miles but hasn't run in over 30 years. It would be cool to have the motor built but the cost of getting the old Crestline back on the road might be more than the value of the car. It might be better to save the motor to put in an early thirties coupe? What do you think a complete motor like that that hasn't ran in so long might be worth as it sits right now?

Some things just make a glorious mechanical noise. Big twin radial bomber engines, locomotive diesels made by EMD in the 60's through 80's. And nicely upgraded american V8's. The old Ford flathead though. There is just nothing else like it. Lovely.

I grew up with flathead Fords.....nothing sounds like them. Good to hear them again. My first car was a '50 Ford Flattie....wish I still had it.
@donf38773 жыл бұрын
I had a '51 coupe back in 19 and 72. Stopped at this rather shady gas station. The guy behind the counter saw my ride and explained he had some parts for the engine. I thought he was trying to pick me up (only 18), so I blew him off. Was back in there a month later, and the same guy was there. He motioned for me to look over the counter. Sitting on the floor was a mirror polished three deuce intake, Offenhauser high compression heads, tube headers, and a cam of some kind. I was like, man I ain't got the money to get that stuff. He said, "If you want them... they are yours". My dad helped replace the cam with everything torn apart anyway, and we got the rest bolted on. The cam was every bit as big as this one!!! And, I actually found the correct matched set of 97's for the intake at a really old auto parts store (the boxes were covered with a quarter inch of dust). Oh and, I relocated the overdrive switch to the floor shifter so I had 1st, 2nd, 2nd over, 3rd, and 3rd over without taking my hand off the knob. That was the ONLY hot rod of mine my dad liked. He was 67 at the time (had me really really late in life) and he had a '32 coupe with the same set-up (smaller engine) before WW2 broke out :-) Switched to Chevy after that. '62 and '63 and '64 Impala SS all with built 327's and four speeds. Then switched to Chrysler... a 300 with the 413 cross-ram. But the best car (super-sleeper) I ever had... was a '71 AMC Ambassador four-door sedan!!! Found it obviously looking for something else!!! An old guy traded it in and the salesman had sold it new and knew all about it. The old man used it to pull a huge Airstream trailer. It had a Police Interceptor 401, super-duty suspension, and a 3.91 posi. I put 36" glasspacks in front and 24" behind the rearend. It was stock quiet until you really got on it. With J70's, I had to ease into it off the line or it would melt the tires!!! It ate 383 Road-Runners and Chevy SS 396's and 390 Mustangs for breakfast. And that was with the windows up and the AC on!!! Wholly crap... if I had all those cars... oh and the five guitars and three amps I had back then too... I could sell all it and actually have some money to enjoy retirement (Social Security with no other income sucks).

@@donf3877 What a sweet deal! You don't find people like that much anymore. I had a 2-deuce Navarro intake with 94's, Denver heads, Lincoln Zephyr gears, Hurst Mystery shifter, 4:11's, Flamethrower headlights, hot ignition, MoonRaker antennas, wide rims, some lowering, etc. I wanted the overdrive but didn't locate one when I was really working on it. I loved the dash on that old 1950 with the blue-ish stock lighting, etc. Seems to me split windshields had more class. After a few years in it I went to a '57 Ford Hardtop with 312 set up just exactly like Robert MItchum in Thunder Road movie. That was one hell of a car and I really wish I'd never sold it. I let it go when I saw the new Roadrunners in 1970. Now there was a car I should have NEVER traded........let it go in trade for '72 Nova.....what a mistake.
@donf38773 жыл бұрын
@@tomnekuda3818 The '57 was and still is my all time favorite Ford. It just had a mean look standing still! I damn near cry every time I watch Thunderball and that '57 hardtop convertible crashes and burns. Not until the '63 1/2 fastback did Ford get it right again. One reason for liking the '57 so much was back when I was 14. Had a paper route after school and a guy had one he stuffed a built 390 in. He was running a 3/4 ton truck three speed in it, because he kept blowing four speeds. If I remember right it was two-tone white and light yellow. It had the chrome half covers on the headlights, it was lifted just slightly in the back... and it had the old standard Cragar's up front and chrome reverse in back. His wife had a metalflake silver '64 Dodge. After talking with him several times about his cars, I would always wait until the '57 was gone to go and collect for the papers. He had been in the military... and the wife was Japanese. I liked talking to him about his cars... but man oh man did I have a crush on her!!!!!!!!!!! I cured myself of that by going in the Air Force and marrying one. She turned out to be bi-polar and crazy as hell. Sometimes getting what you wish for doesn't turn out the way you hoped :-( There's a guy here in Florida with a sectioned (looks to be about 4 maybe even 6 inches) '50 ford two door painted pearl white. Actually looks modern with the short body and tall top. Only saw it twice... and always moving, and always from the rear, and always in traffic so I couldn't get a really good look at it. The ass end is all stock except the blue-dots in the taillights. Never got the chance to see it from the front. Would love to know what he's running in it because it sounds real healthy. It does still have a stick in it... so I fantasize it has a super built flattie in it. Then I remember the fantasy of my youth, and decide maybe it's better if I don't find out!!!!!!!!

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station fuel pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime :-((

China told our EU politicians that they wont do any business with underdeveloped countries that still allow CO2 emitting traffic or combustion based industry after 2030...I am sure USA and UK also will be forced by China to 100% electric traffic because today no industrialized country can afford sanctions by China.... Because it's a "Hot Rod" and that's what they looked like. When the Hot Rod hobby/industry first started in the mid 40's, the cars were stripped down to save weight in order to go faster. Also, many of the race cars of the day didn't run hoods either so if you wanted you car to look "racy" you ran it without a hood. With such a "pretty" engine, you obviously wanted to show it off too !!
