One of my substitute teachers from high school named Mr. Thomas. Would sing this song at the end of every class he tought! I was looking for some piece today! I found it that! REST WELL MR. THOMAS! HAYA HAYA!!!

My mother used to sing the first verse of this song a lot when I was a child. I didn't get all the implications back then. I almost forgot it completely until I was reminded of it recently. The internet proves itself good for something occasionally, LOL...

My mom used to sing this to me as a girl too. Check out the Billboard Song and The Man Song too. She also sang them to me.

As a young boy in the early 50's I remember a busload of churchgoers singing this song over and over on the way to visit the Shrine at Czestochowa in Pennsylvania. Everyone in the bus sang. Time goes by fast!

I looked this up bc I remember a family singing it in Beverly Cleary’s book Ribsy, which I read in the 1980s. I realized that I could finally hear what it sounded like.

when I graduated from jr. high school my parents threw me a big party . my father played the harmonica and his uncle played the guitar his cousin played the accordion . my dads friend louie Marengo started singing sweet violets and started putting in his own words and everyone started laughing there asses off . what made it even funnier was that he sounds like Rodney Dangerfield when he sings and talks . my aunt Gloria from ohio brought her friend to the party that was 86 years old . she said she hadn't laughed that hard in many years . I told her I could count all the teeth in your mouth and she said all the teeth in her mouth were false ... my dad reno rossi died april 20 th 2009 of complications of dementia and alzhiemers . plus he got pneumonia so he exasperated . plus his friend is 89 now and showing signs of memory loss . so hearing this song brings back a lot of great memories from june 1981 . thank you for posting this little diddy of a song ...

Sweet Violets Sweeter than the roses Covered all over from head to toe Covered all over with sweet violets There once was a farmer who took a young miss In back of the barn where he gave her a lecture On horses and chickens and eggs And told her that she had such beautiful Manners that suited a girl of her charms A girl that he wanted to take in his Washing and ironing and then if she did They could get married and raise lots of Sweet violets Sweeter than the roses Covered all over from head to toe Covered all over with sweet violets The girl told the farmer that he'd better stop And she call her father and he called a Taxi and got there before very long 'Cause some one was doin' his little girl Right for a change and so that's why he said If you marry her son, you're better off single 'Cause it's always been my belief Marriage will bring a man nothing but Sweet Violets Sweeter than the roses Covered all over from head to toe Covered all over with sweet violets The farmer decided he wed anyway And started in planning for his wedding Suit which he purchased for only one buck But then he found out he was just out of Money and so he got left in the lurch A standin' and waitin' in front of the End of the story which just goes to show All a girl wants from a man is his Sweet Violets Sweeter than the roses Covered all over from head to toe Covered all over with sweet violets Sweet Violets Source: Musixmatch Songwriters: Cy Coben / Charles R. Grean

The original lyrics were "Sweet violets, sweeter than the roses, covered all over from head to toe, covered all over with shit." Everyone knew the original lyrics, so this version of the song built on skipped words was a hit. Recorded originally by Dinah Shore. Dorothy Collins could sing, and did sing, anything.
