With the TWSBI Eco (and any TWSBI), I always screw the caps on until they stop and no more. TWSBI pens are made of polycarbonate which is super impact resistant but also really susceptible to environmental stress cracking. Even though you can drop them or hit them really hard and they won't crack or break, if the parts are tightened too snugly or there is too much tension, it will split or crack after some time. Polycarbonate is interesting because unlike other materials, it won't give you any indication that it is overtightened right away. You will only know a few months later when it splits. What I do with all my TWSBI pens when I first get them is that I undo the piston mechanism slightly and screw it back down so it just stops and stays. I cap all of mine carefully and don't tighten the caps down. I just screw them until they stop. I have a pretty big collection of Ecos and have been collecting them since they first came out. I haven't had any issues after I did what I did with making sure things are not super tight. In my family several of my family members also have the Eco, and they haven't had any issues either after following my advice. I kind of wish they made them out of PMMA like Pilot does, but if you drop that, the cracking is immediate. It's not as impact resistant as polycarbonate is

That seems like a lot of precautions but I’ll try it out. Funny thing, my two eco-t did not crack 🧐

My picks for starter pens are the Lamy Safari and the TWSBI Diamond 580 ALR. The 580's feel like they are built better than the ECO's or below. It is an incredible pen for the money. For a smaller pen the TWSBI Mini is really nice! The Travelers Company Brass Pen is also a great pocket pen, I am carrying one today! The Lamy is so flexible with how it can be filled and the fact that the nibs are swappable.

I think the platinum preppy is the perfect beginner fountain pen. It’s very inexpensive, there is a choice of nib size, you can get a converter if you want, and they seal so well that I’ve picked up a pen that has been left in a bag inked for a year and it writes immediately.

Omg haii! It's my first time watching your videos and I notice your accent sounded very familiar, then it clicked you must be from quebec province~ me too ^^ Thank you for the well elaborate video, it helped me a lot to choose since I've only recently started this hobby and I was lost on which pen to start (funny enough the first thing I bought were bottled inks xD ) that pearl kaweko fountain pen surely is very pretty and lovely, too bad it was a limited edition TT

I bought 2 Lamy’s (Bright Pink and a Vista) and the Retro Pop dark grey Pilot MR3 a couple years ago now, so glad to know I picked a couple of goodies for my first ones. I also have 2 ‘cheap” Schneider Easy’s… and a red Platinum Peppy.. both of which I really like because they always just work… and the green Sailor Fude just because it was intriguing! I have all of them inked with Carbon Black except the Preppy (I just refill its cartridge with a Blood Red ink)….because I’m pretty much just into black ink that’s waterproof for line and wash sketching so I don’t have the ink addiction either 😂 I did go down the rabbit hole and watch millions of videos but luckily I managed to hold onto my wallet by telling myself I didn’t need more FP’s (yet) and rode the want wave until my obsession turned to another craft (as it often does)… but I still watch videos like yours every month or 2 🫶

thank you for sharing your collection and thoughts. you have a nice selection of fountain pens. I wish my collection was that manageable! I’m sorry you’ve had cracking on your TWSBI’s. They have the best nibs but I’ve read they sometimes crack. 😊

If I had to pick just one pen in my collection (but please don’t make me, LOL!) it would be my Kaweco AL Sport in rose gold. I find the plastic Sports too light. My writing is not nice with them at all. The metal ones have a perfect weight to them, IMO. I tend to switch between capped and uncapped, depending on how I feel in that moment. Can’t really say why, but the great thing is they work well either way for me. I have a few other AL Sports, and I like their colours (Vibrant Violet, Petrol, and Iguana Blue - all so pretty 😍), but there is something about the smooth finish on the rose gold that feels “just right” in my hand. If I had to pick my second choice, it would probably be my TWSBI Diamond 580 in the Iris colour. So beautiful to look at! I will add, the Platinum Prefounte is also a solid pen I have in my rotation. Just a little more polished looking than the Preppy, for only a little bit more, and they write so well. A very reasonable, and still professional looking entry into the (dangerous) rabbit hole of FPs 😉

My first pen was a charcoal black Lamy Safari. I ended up not liking it because the converter dried out after a few weeks of not using it. I swapped it out for a TWSBI Eco, but fell in love with the Diamond 580 ALR. Especially since the grip unscrews for filling with an ink syringe. That's probably the last one I'll ever buy. I've seen other pens I like, but I can't justify getting them.

I am absolutely bewildered by the Twsbi cracking thing ... I own assorted versions of the Eco, 580, 700, Mini, VacMini, Classic, and Precision ... as well as one each of Aurora, Draco, Kai ... and I've never had any of them crack.

Thats so strange. I’m also very gentle with my pens so I’m wondering if it could have something to do with the climate? Or some other external factor?

I was wondering about climate as well 🤔 So far 🤞🏻, none of my ECOs, ECO-Ts, Diamond 580, or Mini Diamonds have gotten cracks. The oldest ones being about 6 years old (ish) now. I’m in Alberta, and it’s pretty dry. Intuitively, I’d think that would make them more brittle, but 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m just thankful that they’ve held out, because I do really enjoy writing with them, and they were my go to pen when I went back to college (as a mature student) because of the large ink reservoir.

@@SweetLittleCarrot I live in Montreal, Canada and I have had no cracking issues with my TWBIs. I have a dozen or more Ecos! They are my favourite go to pen. I always have several inked up in my currently inked. So climate could be a valid reason, but not for me. I never take my Ecos apart for cleaning (too lazy and had no reason to 😂)…I also don’t over tighten the cap. Not sure if that’s why I haven’t had any issues or just luck!

If you have problems with twsbi use the warranty they replace all the parts I never have a broken one 😂. A Kaweco whit a crack 🤔is rare for me. Lamy Safari I realy don't like the triangular grip but one of my favorite pens is the Lamy 2000. For me the best beginner pen is the pilot varsity $3 cheap disposable fp. I like Benu pens the nibs are very good i think every one will have a favorite brand or pen we only have to discover it.
@SweetLittleCarrot
@SweetLittleCarrot 4 ай бұрын
I’ve used the warranty once for two pens but I don’t have the motivation to do it again. The crack on the kaweco is more a hairline crack and ink stained it, but it doesn’t go all the way. I think it’s more obvious because of the pastel colour. The varsity is such a reliable one! And it lasts so long too! Great choice.
