I'm curious. I know a lot of bakers do character cakes but it is copyright infringement. How do you handle that? I know the only legal character cakes are DecoPac like Walmart and Publix use.

It's all about the size of the cupcake liners! Opt for larger ones that aren't standard size :)

Question wasn't directed at me, but it will likely depend on your costs and the market in your area. When I (in a small town) make cupcakes at home I charge $2/ea. The bakery I work at charges $1.25 for basic and $2.25 for fancier cupcakes.

They would be a lot more than that here in BC (where this bakery is also located). Everything is expensive here, including property/housing.
