I watched this video a few months ago, and thought that may work on our 2000 Dodge Truck front bumper. So, Friday, I tried it and it Does Work!!! I was amazed at how much better it looks and then Hubby did the front shroud under the bumper and they look brand new. Thank You for the great hints that you share here on all your videos. This was the first one we tried but will re-visit them all again, so we can get more hints and tricks to making our vehicles look so much better.

I live in Arizona, I applied kiwi shoe polish to the plastic and the Heat must have brought the oils back but it last at least 3 years with out other treatment. Imagine all the possibilities with 303, top coat, or any of the nanotech protestants! Awesome vid, thanks for the info.

I used 303 for our truck, and it works nice, but sure doesn't look as good as the heat gun method that is described in this video. Also I would imagine it doesn't last as long either. I do Love my 303, and use it for many things, like the top to my Jeep Wrangler, but, this method on the trim of our truck, I don't think it can be beat.

You actually are melting the plastic but in a good way and it does work. You are burning out the oxidized damaged plastic and heating it just enough to smooth it back out on it own. They do the same thing with certain acrylics to smooth them out. Its called flame polishing. This is one of the better heat gun videos I've seen. Thank you

If you hold the heat gun at a low angle rather that pointing it directly at the surface you can move along faster and "push" the heat ahead as you go. You'll need to go at it from a couple different directions when you have features such as those raised round dots.

Worked in injection molding made all kind of exterior and interior plastics white patches in the plastic is moisture we use propane torches to get rid of it it will also darken the plastic if it is faded but beware if overheated you will lose texture and burn all the oils out and it will turn to grey

Worked great on my beloved 2000 Nissan Xterra Just a remark: not all trimming plastics are the same, some are harder than others, for example door handles, so the heat does not "melt" the surface on those and you will not see much of a change Other than that I'm pretty happy with what I was able to get with a cheap $20 heat gun and a little time and patience

I used the heat gun on the bumper of a 1991 Honda Civic Wagon and then as it cooled I put on Kiwi Black Dye (yes, the shoe product I found for $5 at the supermarket). It's been 7 years now and it is only just starting to fade again and I live in Arizona. I have read though that how a bumper responds to different treatments has to do with what sort of plastic it is, some respond better than others to different products or a heat gun. I was fortunate.

For everyone saying this isnt permanent. I would like to tell you that if you use this method and use a high quality uv blocker for plastic once every 3-4 weeks especiaclly during summer the black will stay at least 7-10 years. Also hold into acount the amount you neglect your vehicle. No offense to armor all but there products are for the most part trash.

I just did it again on a Rodeo 02 and it looks like new, I should send you a pick but its raining, maybe later. It has to do with the thermal dynamics of polymer plastics, I think, I'm no expert, but as the weathered surface heats up, a new layer of rich dark molecules rise to the surface. At least that's my take. Any plastic engineers out there?

I think this is a very useful tip. But I would say that in stead bringing internal oils out. You are resurfacing the deteriorated outer layer by lightly melting it.

Awesome post as usual ! Like I commented before - I've always thought the white 'powder like discoloration' could be from mold growing on and eventually in the superficial layer of the trim pieces - have you ever tried using a dilute solution of Bleach or Tilex before the Alcohol to see if the treatment looks better and lasts longer ? Keep up the Great Work .

What happened, to adding clean motor oil to penetrate the plastic while it's hot? Didn't you have an old video like that, where you heated up the Plastic and added the oil for longer lasting protecting and less chances of fading because the plastic pours were opened by heat gun. Would adding clean motor oil be a good option, is so can you suggest which oil or oils worked best for you. Thanks again for your wonderful videos Bro. 👊

I did this to my xc90. It lasted 3 months. It looks grey and dingy again :( It could be that my bumper is made of diff rubber? Dunno. After heat, it came up much darker but didn't have as much oil as the bumper you worked on. I'm sure protectant will bring it back up to black again.

It reminds me of dry skin. Dry skin get flaky, chalky and we put lotion on to help dry skin. If you hydrate enough your skin is less likely to dry up and the natural oils help lubricate so our skin does not dry out. There was a comment that someone said they used a sponge sander and sanded the white chalky stuff off and it worked. Well that is like exfoliating.

Will this purge out chemicals like waxing/polish chemicals etc? Ohh and also my trim is odd, it gets pretty close to my car paint like in crevices.. will the heat damage the car paint? I basically want to do all my worn out trim, even the foglight covers next to the foglights, will it be ok near the lights also, the low heat? Thanks!

First, if you are concerned about the car paint, tape off the edge with painters tape, when the process is done per the video, there will be no paint damage. Second, to remove any wax buildup, you need to use this amzn.to/3hsXZbJ and this amzn.to/3oJsgY8 Thanks for your question. Have a great day. mad Mike the hammer SPC
