Pink Floyd has used an early 3d sound tech for many decades in their live shows via the azimuth coordinator. Also the old high end discrete quad systems, with proper speaker placement, plus the hard to find discrete quad records and tapes, did a decent job of giving a 3d sound environment even back in the 70's. And all analog! With digital... wow! Virtual soundscaped environments. Hear and feel the actual sound(s) of "___________"! With VR, scent tech, and ect. another step closer to an actual holodeck, or maybe the matrix... I dig it!

Spacial audio is the file type name for the consumer, but the real technology internationally involved in that is dolby atmos right?

But bands and orchestras play in front of us. I don’t get it. Ok a center channel would help for sure. But what is supposed to be coming from the speakers behind us? Or above us? Unless they are sound effects. I don’t get it

Didn’t carver audio make a rack unit for the home system call a “ homophonic graphics imager”. Pink Floyd also recorded in this format in the day. Or I’m the only guy who knows thiS.?

Absolutely ridiculous. We have been to surround before back in the 1970s with quadraphonic. Look how well that did! We don't need surround/spatial/quad/or high tech multi-channel and decoding for music. Music comes from a stage with left/right and front to back; the rest is just reflections of the hall. I can easily create this with ALL 2 channel stereo recordings using an additional stereo amplifier, two speakers and a reverb/delay unit. And I can use this system for any recording ever made, no special encoding and extra channels needed. We should be concentrating on getting a more accurate reproduction of our instruments in the recording studio and playback home stereo systems...NOT....creating bigger more expensive and incompatible/proprietary systems. We are decades or centuries away from this accurate recording of instruments with all the limitations of electronics today. Take the innocent lone acoustic grand piano....not a single recording/playback of this majestic instrument has been engineered yet. Every recording since the beginning of recording has not come close to reproducing a grand piano in the home of a stereo owning listener. Not even close. It is these solo instrument recordings of a piano that illustrate how much more innovation and engineering remains necessary.

Well, i completely agree with you on the part with the incompatible proprietary systems. The situation we have now, with all these competing, incompatible formats (none of which were made for music btw.), is an absolute disaster imho. However, I would personally not go as far as saying that there is no place for spatial audio in music whatsoever. I've heard truly amazing things mixed in higher order Ambisonics for instance. This is a niche thing of course, as getting these things to translate on any practical domestic system is not trivial, and in many casesit might not be worth the extra effort on the production side. But in the case of the lack of realism in a stereo piano recording, there's probably only so much that can be done in the stereo domain, as we would have very limited means of modeling the size and directivity of the instrument, not to talk about the room response. The thing is that most of the current, object based formats, that are mainly focused on panning point sources, can't really change that either, which is why I tend to like things like HOA.

@@florianangerer5121 Interesting. What advantages are you hearing in these multi-channel (3+)? I have already recreated the sound reflections of a concert hall with the musicians on a stage with my reverb and delay signal processing (2 rear speakers providing extra reflections). I can make my listening room a large hall of 10,000 seats or an intimate gathering of 100. It gives ME the option and variety of how I listen to the same recording. Pretty darn sweet actually :) I am a recording engineer, musician and performer, so I know what a piano sounds like, the limitations of recording is extremely inaccurate microphones and mic positioning coupled with extreme limitations of dynamics capture and detail. Getting a stereo sound and space similar to sitting in front of a real concert grand has never been done...not even close. Binaural recording may help break some ground where the recording simulates human hearing with our head between the ears accounted for. If done correctly, the future may give us that sweet spot (the best seat in the house) as our recorded space. Interesting where this may go....Thank you for the conversation.

@@WildernessMusic_GentleSerene That's a very good question. It probably has to do with the way I perceive the world. I am blind since birth, and I use a basic form of echo localisation. Being able to tell the difference between a car and a tree, a window and a wall etc. has always been an integral part of getting a picture of my surroundings, and that has also had consequences for my music making: I've always been very picky about instrument positioning, matching reverbs and so on. Of course, Stereo is relatively limited in that regard. So i guess what excites me about spatial audio is being able to recreate some of the things I hear, and use them in an artistic, perhaps even wildly exaggerated way. That may also explain why I'm particularly fond of Ambisonics, because, while it's a speaker agnostic format, you have the complete sound field (even including source directivity and complex room models if you want) baked into the master file, and dont need to stitch together something with a bunch of objects and multiple reverbs. Speaking of reverbs: In your setup, do you apply reverb only to the rears? Also, I'm with you regarding binaural audio. Stereo and binaural are not very well compatible, but binaural audio is still a great option for spatial reproduction, as most people will never have a multichannel setup at home. So the idea of creating a single mix, that plays in Stereo on Stereo systems, binaurally on headphones etc. is not that bad, and that's what object based systems like Atmos promise. I guess I'm just finding it extremely limiting to work in that domain.

@@florianangerer5121 I forgot to mention, when processing the 2 channel source for rear spatial effects the first 800hz need shelved to -15db or more. All reflections contain little frequencies below. To answer your question; processing is only for the rear, I don't interfere with the original source. So depending on hall size and your desired seat in that hall, early reflection cannot be simulated with just rear speakers. Possibly that is what you are hearing, those early reflections before the rear reflections find you. Those reflections from the side walls just 20 feet from the sides of the stage. (all dependent on auditorium size simulation).

@@WildernessMusic_GentleSerene That's very interesting! Are these rear speakers placed like a Stereo pair, or somewhat off to the sides, like in ITU 5.1? As for emulating side reflections: I often use a short reverb, or even just a delay with two hard panned reflections, and pan that usually between + and -60° and + and -90° in the sound field. Works great in ambisonics, when I don't want to set up an elaborate room model. I don't have that much experience with Atmos or standard surround, so I don't know how well that works there, would be interesting though.

i have been tempted to say something to both mitch and daniel but i dont want to cause trouble. I am older than both of them and i have to work hard at staying somewhat fit. Both these guys are precious and it scares me that they are both now a heart attack just waiting to happen. we cant lose these guys. they are awesome. did you watch the studio visit video that featured mitch's home studio? oh boy.
