Same. The hardest part for me was training my right hand. Being left handed shreddery is usually easier, but as a bluegrass rhythm guitarist, the right hand was the hardest for me to get comfortable with. But when it clicked, it was like a new super power.

I am another lefty who plays right-handed! Day 1 of guitar lessons when I was 10 years old. Guitar teacher sees me holding my little nylon string acoustic left-handed. His reaction: “NOPE! That’s not gonna work!!” and flipped it around, re-strung it right-handed, and said “you’re going to play right-handed from now on” 😂😂 Not gonna lie, he did me a huge favor looking back at it haha

I’m a lefty who plays right handed . Day 1 of lessons grade 7 (1997) instructor said I would hate her for it now but thank her for it later . She was right . I am thankful to have learned right handed from day 1 .

I'm a lefty that plays a left-handed guitar but with the strings reversed (Low E on the bottom) Couldn't find a left-handed guitar growing up in the middle of nowhere, so I took what I could find, held it how it was most comfortable, and started learning the chords. Still play that way 20 years later. In guitar stores now, I have to get the feel of a left-handed body but I have to test the sound on a right-handed body.

I play the same way. Low E on bottom because I learned on my grandpa's old Silvertone guitar. Have to search out those beloved body styles as righties to see what's possible to even play flipped. Thank gawd for SGs, Vipers, Crestwoods/Wilshires, and Les Paul Junior double cuts

Playing right handed feels so natural as a lefty. Before I really started, I picked up a guitar at the store and the guy said it looked more natural strumming right handed, I said OK. He also said there’s more of them and less expensive than left-handed guitars. That was plenty enough convincing lol

That's what was said to me too 😂😂. My mom took me to buy one when I was a kid, The guy asked me to pick out one on the wall. I told him I was left-handed and he showed me some. I asked why there were less lefties than right-handed guitars and he told me that left-handed guitars cost more and they make less. He said that I don't have to play left just because I am left-handed. It's much easier to learn with a different hand if you haven't learned at all. It's crazy how weird a left-hand guitar feels now 😂

I appreciate this, I really avoid bring this up but some folks like myself are limited to left orientation due to medical reasons such as limited range of motion in one or both arms. Good looking out for us players! Sure took a long time to find my dream JP6 in a left handed configuration.

I am a lefty who plays “righty”. I made the choice early on as I grew up in a house of guitar players and didn’t want to have to get a lefty guitar just so I could strum a few chords. I really think anyone can play in whatever orientation, it’s just a matter of what your natural strengths and weaknesses will be. I’ve got great dexterity on my fretting hand, but I have to work a bit more on my rhythm and picking accuracy.

Im left handed but there is no way I would ever torture myself by trying to play one of those backwards guitars. On a regular guitar my left hand is playing all of the hard parts. My right hand just has to act like a monkey and pick the string. They say 90% of the people learning to play guitar quit. I say it's because they're trying to play it backwards. Right-handed people should be doing the hard parts with the right hand the way Hendrixs did. Use the left hand to pick the string.

@@paul-davidalmond716 it is a big advantage. You're not trying to train your hand and learn the guitar at the same time. Watching a right handed person trying to learn the most difficult things they will ever learn and try to do it with the hand they never use is hard to watch.

I’m a lefty guitarist here! Every lefty guitar player knows the agony of walking into any music store, asking if they have any left handed guitars, then the clerk walks into the back, re-emerges holding a dusty squire strat with rusty strings and says “here ya go!”. I’ve played guitar for almost 37 years now and have probably only played on maybe 30 lefty guitars ever. I own several now but usually you have to order them before ever getting to try them out, it’s not great being a lefty guitarist lol.

Same but opposite. I’m right handed and play left handed. The fingers on my right hand are just a little more dexterous so it felt more natural to fret with them. I don’t understand how people play “right handed”. You’re using your left hand!

I am a lefty and play left handed. My teacher was okay with me playing that way 8 years ago and now there's no going back. Yeah the choice for guitars/basses is shit but i dont mind too much. Started on classical and 3 years in got an electric yamaha pacifica. Great guitar, only had to change the plastic jack recently.

I believe that modern guitar players are playing the guitar backwards anyway. In the old days with movable frets the left hand would hold down chords and the right (the dominant hand) would pluck the strings Nowadays the left hand is moving all over the place and the right hand is relegated to holding a pick. Modern guitarists have made it harder for themselves. Thank you for your time.

I remember my best friend in 8th grade was the one who taught me slot of guitar and helped me pick it up so fast. He started doing drugs and having mental issues like schizophrenia and decided to reverse his guitars string them up backwards and learn guitar as a lefty. He got pretty good at it but it was very odd as he was much better as a right handed player but gave it up for some reason. I miss that guy.

By the time I finally got a real guitar, I’d played so much guitar hero that I couldn’t play left handed at all

My first instrument which I got on my 4th birthday was a Ukulele. At first, when I didn’t know yet how to play real chords on it, I always played it left-handed. Only a couple of years later, when I first had lessons, I started playing guitar right-handed. Also as a leftie who plays right handed I don’t understand why anyone needs a left handed guitar. If I’ve got more dexterity in my fretting hand then that’s better for lead, maybe not as good for rhythm but I don’t think it really makes a difference.

I’ve played left handed guitar since the early 70’s. Back then there was very few lefty guitars. I finally in 1976-77 bought a Deluxe Les Paul. Now Almost all manufacturers have at least a couple left handed models.

I seemed to have found some of my people in the comments. I am a lefty predominantly by writing, but I play guitar right handed because my dad was the one who put it in my hand. I find it really weird however that my right hand is more stronger, but then again I guess it makes sense. I pitch, pick, write (a little) with my right hand. But I am predominantly left handed at writing. Why does this happen?

If I'm not mistaken, you're supposed to be playing a left handed guitar if you're right handed and vice versa. The idea is your dominant hand would be more versatile so the fingerings and such should be easier to handle. So all of us right handed people are playing the wrong way. Synyster Gates of Avenged Sevenfold is the only one doing it correctly since he's left handed.

Guitar is a two-handed instrument. There are no left and right-handed guitars. There are only left facing and right facing guitars. For my new students I tell them to pick the orientation with the most models available. 😉

It definitely seems that way now, but originally the guitar was only a harmony instrument. People basically just played chords on the left and a variety of strumming and chicken picking from the right hand.
