I was an athlete attending the Munich Olympiad. I was a witness to most of the ongoing tragedy. I personally met and established a quick rapport with two of the weightlifters, Joseph Romano and David Berger. I was also participating as a weightlifter. To this day I still feel a deep sense of anger. I was very happy and very proud of the vengeance inflicted by the Israelis on the culprits of the massacre.

Germany’s actions were shameful. I was completely unaware how incompetent, almost intentionally so, they acted. Today they have a very professional anti-terrorism force. I was also unaware of how Europe and the US bought peace from these terrorists. As we know today, there is no peace with Palestine so long as one Jew remains alive in the world.

What I find even more shocking than the massacre itself is the sheer mind-boggling level of incompetence by the authorities dealing with the situation. At times I found myself shaking my head in disbelief.

Outstanding listen. Thank You. This is better than Gideon's Spies because it is written by a normal person ; not a professional writer who dramatises events. If you want more technical detail and exciting anecdote the Thomas book is the one to go for. Those events in 1972 set the scene for our world today where 24/7 news is the stage on which everyone seeks to act our their own morality plays. Better to just turn it off and play with the cat.

I , as an American visited Munich in 1972, just weeks after the games. I was really young, but i still remember the dark feelings all around. Maybe this came from my dad because I didn't speak German. But i remember anger and embarrassment. The whole terror still hung in the air. Standing in the Olympic stadium on center of the field , i couldn't hear a thing. The air was perfectly still. It was kind of spooky.

Love this book. I worked in the Middle East for some years. I was surprised to learn that the Arabs [both military and civilian] I worked with from a number of Arab countries absolutely despised the Palestinians. After what the Palestinians had done to Lebanon in the early 1970`s when they were allowed to assimilate into Lebanese life, by well meaning, but incredibly naive liberal Christians ,they started attacking everyone within Lebanon that wasn't as filled with sufficient hatred for the Jews. All the while running across the border into Israel and attacking nearby settlements. I just finished the book Odessa regarding the SS murders of Jews and their subsequent escape after WWII.

@Nobby Barnes well if the last guy is blind bc you took both his eyes, then he can't see where you are, so technically there will be one seeing man left standing. But to the intended point. The reason for an eye for an eye is not retaliation, rather it is a deterrent to those who contemplate evil as their direction or destination. Think about ramifications, if you will. If you steal a cookie and the consequences are severe enough you begin to give more thought to not stealing said cookie. Catch my drift??

Yes, the hostage crisis at the 1972 Munich Olympics and the Israeli response is the basis for the movie Munich. Idk if you meant your question to sound like it was just a movie, but in case anyone else skimming the comments doesn't know- this was a very real event, one that thousands of people all over the world (including the families of those being killed) watched unfold in real time. That said, "Munich" was an excellent movie, I'm going to have to rewatch it at some point after finishing this book.
