This is a common issue, in this case the o-ring fell in the cleaner and swelled up. This can happen simply from getting gas on an o-ring or when removing a float bowl from a carb.

I'm in Florida waiting on the Hurrican..Ian. I stored the generator properly, but a bit of goo formed in one of the tubes. The gasket swelled. I've dried it an put it in the fridge. By watching this video, I am hopeful for a normal gasket. Gods speed. Thanks.

Removed a new carb I had just installed to see if there was rubber spec from hose causing blockage causing surging. No specs. Couldn't get the o ring back on!! Came in to see what the Interweb had to say. And there you are!!! Thought it was just me! THANK YOU!!!

Glad I came across this. I had the opposite problem, new gasket too small. I stretched it around a can and heated the can up with a mini bu torch. Worked but I'll try soaking in gas next time.

Thank you for the tip. Thought I was going mad when I was trying to put a tap valve back together after cleaning the parts in white spirit.

Hahaha!! That is a great tip. I usually ended up cutting square with razor blade a gluing back together. I’ll have to try this next time. The ones that always pissed me off the most were the mikuni throttle cable cover oring. They are orange teardrop shape and as soon as they fall out of the groove they seem to expand twice the size as soon as air hits them!😆

Everyday is a school day! Been riding and fettling over 40yrs and I've only just encountered this issue, swelling o-rings. I ended up using a little instant gasket to keep them in place.

Over a season of having my carb apart my float bowl gasket shrunk a bit and I cant seat it properly. I'm hoping that soaking it in gas for a few minutes will enlarge it enough to get it into position. Then I can put a bead of gas resistant gasket maker to get a good seal. Should I use gas or would you suggest something different to recondition that ring?
@TepcoCycleRepair Жыл бұрын
Gas would do it but don't use gasket maker, it just makes a mess and won't stick good due to the gas soaked gasket

And 3 months later I've got the opposite problem on another carb, a Nikki. The main jet -- a tiny dude -- fell out when I removed the bowl because its O ring had shrunk. While waiting 2 weeks for spares to arrive, if I soak it in ... petrol, brake fluid, whatever, will it bulk up? Anyone know? (Can't get the ring off without destroying it -- it's 2.9 mm x 1.78). Thanks.
@TepcoCycleRepair Жыл бұрын
Soak it in petrol, it should swell.
@brocky78 Жыл бұрын
Mine has dried to much so thinking little bit of carb clean around it will enlarge it slightly again 🙆
@TepcoCycleRepair Жыл бұрын
Regular gasoline will expand it. If it's dry you may just have to replace it.

I don't think that would go over well in the oven, wife would be pissed. But seriously, it may dry it out but it may expand it as well.
