As a redhead who's grandparents in Florida visits just didn't put sunscreen on me to burn very badly on the beach doing skin damage to skin cancer the sun/sand don't like it but, LOVE seashells was my favorite part of all the awful. So enjoy seeing you explore. Would love ❤️ to just collect shells 🐚 and that be my only thing to do and enjoy lovely people who will not harm you for entertainment purposes. Thank you for sharing. ❤

Dear Sharmon, As always, Cayo Costa has been so good to you! And I'm so happy that Captain Jenni found her first Junonia! 🎉 The shells you've found are amazing! And all the critters are so cool! That X seastar was incredible.❤ I've never seen one like that before. Here in the Netherlands, we only have 5 arm seastars. And the manatee, dolphins, stingray, and all the other critters.... what a day! You really live in a little piece of paradise. And I'm so happy that you are willing to share that with us!❤ This week, autumn will really start to make his appearance here in the Netherlands. The next upcoming days will be filled with rain, storm and cool weather. I'm not looking forward to it at all! I'm fact, I hate it. I'm a spring, summer lover. I can tolerate heat very well, and love how nature is at its best with all the flowers and green plants. So, the next couple of months, you have to keep me "warm" with videos of sunny Florida. 😉 I hope that your week is filled with sunshine, happiness and gorgeous shells! Sending love and big hugs, xoxo ❤️, Ilona
@SWFBeachLifeАй бұрын
Ilona I dislike the cold too! I was going out early last week and it wasn't quite as hot as it normally is and it made me sad. I love the heat here! But...those early morning low tides in winter can be so amazing! The critters don't seem to mind the cold as much as I do - LOL! Well to be fair, the water doesn't get all that cold but the air does. And cold air on wet feet is misery. My trip to shell island where I found a big lightning whelk was kind of miserable. I couldn't feel my feet but I learned a valuable lesson and I found lots of shells! This is my 5th winter here and I feel like I learn a new trick each year!

Oh you lucky you!! I’m so jealous of being that close to the dolphins. When they visit us they are always a bit offshore. We have a place here in a town called Margate (on the mainland). In 1835, A man was digging in his garden when he discovered a whole underground grotto covered in shells. They are mosaic and, because they are underground, most have retained their colourings. I remember going to see it on a school trip back in the dark ages, really beautiful. And no one knows why it’s there or what it’s purpose was. That’s the best bit. Hugs and stay safe xx

Hello love! So good to hear your voice this evening! Oh, my goodness, a Junonia?? Been praying you'd find another one! It just took my breath away! Well, hello Miss Crown Conch! Big Lettered Olive, too! Another big Crown Conch! It's gonna be a fun day! What a honkin' big Shark Eye! Nice Banded Tulip, too! Pretty Atlantic Cockle! Oh, I'm trying not to turn green eyed! Been dreaming of the sea three nights in a row. Don't know what it means, though...🤔 Looks like you've got a great day for Cayo Costa. Oh, a mongo Shark Eye! Gorgeous! Oh, the Captain got the Junonia! That one is absolutely amazing! So pretty! Maybe you holding it will call another to you! I really like the chocolate colored Shark Eyes. They are so richly hued. Wow, the zig zag Fighting Conch is simply magnificent! That's interesting about the pukas. I always wondered what shell they came from. I dated a young man from Hawaii when I was young and he gave me a strand of big pukas, about as big as my thumb knuckle, the necklace being about 22 inches long. He had spent his youth searching for pukas and building that magnificent strand! When he proposed, he gave them to me before he offered me a ring! He cheated on me after we were engaged, so I returned the diamond ring, but kept the pukas. I wore them for years and eventually restrung them on stainless wire and gave them to my son, Cory. He was a little rough with them one day because he couldn't manage the clasp and broke the wire that heldd them, and the shells just scattered. We never found all of them, and I cried, making him feel bad. I only have a small handful left and I will restring them one day. I sure do miss those shells. I have some photos of me wearing them. My Daddy's Mama tried to use them in place of the dentures she had lost. They have a lot of memories connected to them. Girl, if this is any indicator, winter is going to be banging! I'm going to have to start walking! Thanks for the solo beach trip with you and Jenny. It was a bucket of fun! Much love, darling, until the next time...happy shelling! If I ever get to Hawaii, I'll search for more.

Hi Sharmon! Glad you had a wonderful day! I love that “sea cross.” That’s so cool! I never knew they can grow only 4 arms. I wonder if it’s a defect? I’ve heard about 10 or more arms but only 4? I wonder if there is any with 3? That would be something? A sea Y? Who knows? Those crown conchs do grow really big. I might have one somewhere in my collection. I think there is another shell house near Sanibel. I heard It’s open to the public. Maybe this is the same house but it can’t be because it’s a private home. I have seen pictures where even the furniture is decorated with seashells! I tried looking it up again but couldn’t find it. I wonder if it was destroyed by hurricane Ian? That would be sad. The Mathew Bailey Shell Museum is still there and I think they lost some live specimens in the storm but everything els in the collection was untouched. How nice it was to end your day with playful dolphins 🐬.
@SWFBeachLifeАй бұрын
The Shell Museum had a lot of damage unfortunately and I know they moved a bunch of the collection off island. And sadly they did lose animals in the hurricane. The hurricane destroyed so much - and we're still recovering. I thought it would only take a year but it's clear that things are going to take much longer. And that 4 armed sea star was so fun to see!

And I just found my first maculated baby's ear last week--same coloration. I find the white ones often, and keep them all! Ever since you found that massive shark eye on FMB, I've wanted to ask you--how large is your largest one? Loved all the critters today, too! Congrats to your friend on her junonia!
@SWFBeachLifeАй бұрын
My biggest one measures about 2-7/16" wide, or 2.438." Baseballs are 2.86-2.94, so my latest one is just a wee bit smaller than the width of a baseball. It's so hard to find hose intact and in good shape at that size!

I love Cayo Costa! Got there on a jet ski a few years ago. Spent my time on the SW shore. I found a brand new pair of Ray Ban sunglasses there, in addition to some great shells! Need to get back there soon! I collect sand dollars (dead ones) and bay scallops. I'm up here next to Anna Maria Island. 😊

I loved Honeymoon Island. I'm going to check out Clearwater soon - perhaps I'll check out Anna Maria island too!

@@SWFBeachLife Bean Point (beach) on the most northern tip of Anna Maria has the most sand dollars I've found but they're pretty scarce. In fact, I don't find a lot of shells at all on AMI. I find more on Longboat Key though. Was just up to Anclote Key a couple weeks ago and found a lot of beautiful shells and sand dollars!

@@JeepGirl941 Good to know! I was looking at AMI but looks like a really long walk to get there from Clearwater Beach. I liked Honeymoon Island a lot and I would like to see some other of the beaches up there and what all can be found. Not all beaches were created equally!
@JeepGirl941Ай бұрын
@@SWFBeachLife agree! The best shelling near AMI area is out on the sandbars. I once found some huge inhabited welks of some kind next to the AMI City Pier but our beaches don't have the variety and quantity that I see in your wonderful vids! Anclote Key (near Tarpon Springs) does though!

I have been waiting for this one and it was well worth the wait!!! 😍 I am curious about the baby’s ear with the colors on it. That’s a different species? I’m learning so much! I have a couple of gray ones, a black one, and an orange one, but fairly certain that I found them in Outer Banks, NC, where the shells are usually discolored in (you guessed it…) orange, gray, and black, so I suspect that they were probably white at some point. However, I have also found gray ones on the Texas coast and they don’t look like they are discolored, but I could be mistaken. I noticed that there was a pattern to the colors on your special baby’s ear, so I am guessing that was how you knew, but is it just a color variation or a completely different species? Fascinating!! Congrats to Captain Jenny on her first J! How exciting! I hope I can find one someday.
@SWFBeachLifeАй бұрын
Yes, that matriculated baby's ear is a different species! The ones that are buried and discolored are likely just discolored, however I am completely unsure for certain as I'm not really as familiar with the shells that are not from Florida. The maculated version will have that brown "smudge" on them 😃 The discolored ones you have sound beautiful!

Loved this! I haven’t watched your videos in forever, I appreciate you and your videos so much. I’m planning a senior trip next summer to Panama ! Wish I could go to swf, but that’d be about 12ish hours from TN lol! Have you ever been to Panama? If so, is the shelling any good? Thank you ! I hope to be able to shell like you one day

I have never been to Panama, but any time I see a photo of a beach, the first thing I look for is shells! If I don't see shells I'm not interested in going 😂

Hi Sharmon! My 7 year old daughter and I are visiting Fort Myers Beach from Oct 9th-14th and you are totally the reason for our spontaneous little mommy/daughter trip! She loves learning all about shells from your videos! We can’t wait! Maybe we will see you on the beach! Haha I have a random question for you that I’m hoping you can help with. I know you’ve mentioned your scoop in lots of videos, do you have any recommendations for a scoop that’s a little lighter weight than the big steel ones on Amazon? They are so heavy to carry around on the beach! I keep trying to find a smaller/lighter one, but they seem to be hard to find! Thanks for your amazing videos and for inspiring what I hope becomes an annual mommy/daughter trip! ❤ Wishing you the best and hope everything is going ok for you all post Helene. 🙏
@SWFBeachLifeАй бұрын
In theory you might be able to find them in the stores down here when you come, but I did find some of the lighter ones on Amazon: amzn.to/4dG60qJ I hope you have safe travels and an amazing time while you're here!

@@SWFBeachLife thank you for the recommendation! 💕 and for taking the time to respond to all of us :) my daughter is so excited. PS - she also now picks up any trash we find on the beach whenever we are on vacation, as do I. Stay safe and hope everyone is doing ok down there 🙏

Oneday, im going to convince my husband to take be further than Destin FL (we live in Louisiana) to SWF, and im going to take one of these awesome shell tours. I took a "swim with dolphins) tours in Destin once and they took us to a island to "shell" but it was only like 20 mins snd i didnt jnow what i was doing then....and I need to come spend at least a month in this area 😂😂 we don't have this kind of shelling in South Louisiana

Be careful this week with the hurricane, and then afterward, the beach should have many shells to collect.

That house is amazing. What's an historic shell mound? Another great video.
@SWFBeachLifeАй бұрын
The Calusa Indians lived here in SW Florida about 2000 years ago and as you can imagine they ate a lot of seafood, including snails. They would discard the shells over and over and these shells could create a mound which we call a "shell mound." These are now historical in nature and we don't disturb them any longer. There is actually a home on Fort Myers Beach that was built next to a shell mound. The home is called The Mound House. I should make a video of it for my other channel!

Great video! We'll be there in March. So, now I want to hire Captain Jenny and go to Cayo Costa Island too! Were you two there during low tide? If so, is low tide the only time worth going? Thank you for the awesome video! I always learn so much from you! 😊
@SWFBeachLifeАй бұрын
We were there during low tide. I personally always find better beach treasures at low tide, so if you're looking for shells I would try to time your trip for low tide on the island (Cayo Costa). Then the rest of the time you can look for places to snorkel or other places to explore. Jenni is a great captain and knows neat places to look for things.
