Over a decade ago, I was working for a utility company, and I had to read the meters at the airport the day that Obama came to town. The meters were all over the goddamn place, and a lot of them were on the roofs of various buildings all over the airport. I even said to the one Secret Service agent “You could just say no, and I can go take a two hour lunch break. It’s not a big deal, I know you guys have a lot going on.” He shook his head and assured me “No, it’s fine. We’ll escort you, you can read the meters.” “…Gee golly… that’s really swell of you.” For added context, I was blazed out of my goddamn mind. I had no idea that Obama was coming to town that day, so when I pulled up, I was not expecting to be surrounded by the Secret Service. Anywho, for what it’s worth, back then, they appeared to be really on point. There was an overwhelming amount of them, they all seemed loose and alert, and they were all smiling and exuding confidence. I saw the behind the scenes, so the on camera detail was probably doing the whole stoic terminator thing, but the ones I interacted with, at least appeared to my smooth brain to be living up to their reputation as the best security detail in the world. So what happened? How did they go from badass to just ass?
