In today’s lesson we’ll be discussing the three types of diminished chords: how they are built using the major scale, and how they can be performed in the key of C. These shapes work very well as passing chords, and are often used in jazz and blues composition. Let's get started!

Learning scales is like trying to measure a coastline. Much better to understand the keys and the chords, of which scales derive. 1-3-5-7(dom,maj)-9(2nd)-11(4th)-13(6th),augmented and diminished.

The best explanation on youtube! Crystal clear how to go from major triad, to diminished triad, to half diminished chord, and to full diminished chord. Though it still not clear for me rational of flatenning b7 second time (for full diminished). We do this for what? To spice up the chord with additional note? What about applying this to other chords? If we have C7 chord (C chord with b7) - by flatening b7 - we will have C6 chord. Or in other words, standard C chord with added 6 degree. Is this the same logic for full diminished or it is different? What if we continue to flatten flatted b7 in fully diminished? Would it be triple flatted 7, or b6? Would it be still diminished chord?

Thanks for explaining. I’m not a technical person so just follow the chord diagrams. I love diminished chords as they add such class to songs. I probably play the half ones as they are easy on my fingers 😀

I must say thank's again! something clicked in my brain. But a quick question - I am learning gypsy jazz style guitar and there are a LOT of halfdim chords used in between chords, but although I have some musical ear, it is DAMN difficult to know where to LAND when putting in a series of halfdim chords, and difficult to know where to START a halfdim "run" of fill chords. Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated! (sorry if I don't make sense, can try to explain better if you don't understand) Like what is the root, where is it, and what root can be used with which halfdims?

The dim7 chord can resolve to a lot of other chords, though I didn't think of it in this case - Ebdim7 to A7 - the dim7 on the b5 (Eb) of the 1 chord, A7. Nice!

Diminished triad can chord to a min7b5 chord or to a dim.seventh chord depending on usage :] Thanks for the video
