I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won roughly a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

My confidence bait, I caught my pb large mouth at four years old on one, will never forget it. It was on a 7 foot 8 spinning rod, in a river, I did everything except take it off the hook once on dock. I was using a shad color swim jig, with a small whit grub paddle tail, as my trailer. Never fished a kids rod a day in my life personally. Always used adult rods.

Thanks, Matt. Working on my swim jig game. Only other bait I could suggest has the same versatility, especially in and around that hind of cover is a Texas rigged worm. I have been wrecking them everywhere on that Berkley Maxscent Kingtail. Only problem is they don't last long as a jig, usually one or two fish, and they're on the expensive side. Have you tried them?

I think youll get more bites on fluorocarbon, but id add that you might lose more if the grass is thick, which dictates if i use fluorocarbon or braid.

I carry on the deck of my boat some small ornamental landscape hand shears. If i get hung up in a branch and I can’t “ pop” it off, instead of untangling the bait, i just cut the branch and drift off. Saves the trolling motor prop and spooks less fish.

I think swim jigs are bad for a number of reasons. Jigheads are best. 1. Wrong head profile for roll. 2. Skirt is unnecessary and probably hinders action a little. Skirt also look unrealistic. Skirt may play a role in retrieval speed. Skirt gives undesirable bulk 3. Weed guards are pointless. Well, not really, but when they are that stiff, it is. Can always mod or remove. Must thin out or cut halfwsys. Weed guards are so stiff you can't even get it to go pass the barb when triggered. Good for coming thru weeds and brush, very bad for hookup. Plus, a skirt makes it very difficult to thread bodies straight, esp. if you are new or don't use them as much. 4. I do better using straight jighead. It's all in the action. Only difference is having weed guard . For the most part, you don't really get hung up unless your bait rolls hard. Your line is technically you weed guard if your lure run vertical like a normal swim jig or a Keitech or a spinnerbait.

99% of my fishing is also on a River in Canada. The Ottawa River. Great smallmouth and largemouth. Been throwing spinnerbaits for years as a search bait and have never used a swim jig before. After watching this video I’ll be picking some up. It’s basically a spinnerbait without the blades and much more versatile! The blades on a spinnerbait can cause it to be physically taxing when covering water fast. The swim jig will be a refreshing change! Your videos are excellent and very informative. Thank you!

Been throwing the California Swim Jig on a 7’2 mag heavy and crashing it through grass. Just caught my PB on Thursday doing that. Just 3.5 pounder but a start to the hunt for 5+.

I've been using a 7'5" MH-XF for my swim jigs lately. Seems that the extra length makes the tip a bit softer while having the sensitivity of the XF action. Not sure if it's my favorite yet but that's what I end up trying it on consistently. Also, have you tried a River2Sea D Walker 120mm on the back? The action is fantastic and gives you a completely new look.

I’m not a fan of using it on XF rods. I’ve tried it and found i was losing a lot of fish with it. But if it works for you that’s all that matters.

I love a swimjig and I use the same dirty jigs in 1/2oz . It’s late October now, do you have a rule of when things cool down🤷🏻‍♂️ or can it work in cooler temps ?

eventually you get to the point most fish move deeper and the swimjig isnt a great choice. thats happened here in north central wisconsin.Id say mid 50's or below in the north country. down south you can use it year round

Caught my PB this fall on a swim jig skipped under a tree overhang. A 7 lber, which is pretty dang big for NJ. First cast, big blowup, totally missed the bait. Second cast to same spot, bam, she inhaled it. River2Sea D Walker 100 trailer in green pumpkin. Casting accuracy is a work in progress for me; just started using baitcasters a few years ago. That day my skips were right on target.

I dont mind catching pikes except when they broke me , especially a nice 110 vision ! I can see that you have shorts . Here in Quebec it’s getting really cold and right now only walleye are bitting ! I like a swim jig from the bank , almost no snag !

Only time we get lots of toothies is in the fall when they ones we have seem to pull out towards the current more for some reason. We really dont have that many of them up here compared some other places.

Matt, I do the same but with a chatterbait, both has same profile but I have the feeling that the vibration calls more fish, One question and hope is not a stupid one, when you decide to throw a swim jig versus a bladed jig ( chatter bait ). Thanks for the video, was a good one.

i dont like throwing a chatterbait into the logjams i do the swim jig. i also prefer the swim jig in clearer water.

Great video footage, Matt. Your skip casts are flat out amazing. I am not there yet, but working on it. Sorry for your lure losses due to the Pike. I have decided that when I can get my lure closer to the places you get yours I will be catching more fish. I really enjoyed the video! Thanks. How do you feel about the Tokyo Rig. Do you believe in it? If so, would you do a video on it to include the best times and conditions to fish it?

Nice video and also nice smallmouth in the river there. I live on the upper Potomac river and our smallmouth fishing has declined. I believe because of the increased population of flat head catfish. They are a eating machine.
