Totally agree about swimming making you hungry. Very easy to binge eat after a swim session, less so after running.

Back in 2020, when I took swimming lessons to perfect my technique. I would go home after the one hour sesh and get out my huge Tupperware bowl of party mix!

What I appreciate about swimming is the ability to do it more often than running. The recovery time frame from swimming is much shorter and doesn’t need to be as spaced out for runs since it’s not weight bearing

Less impact on the joints overall, probably something that's not factored in this video

As a swimmer will always be an advocate for it especially for weightloss. I wieghef 110kilo and literally just swam ate in a calorie deficit and strength training got down to 80kilo

Swimming is a great workout. No pressure on the joints like running. Great analysis!

Could we see running vs cycling?? My watch always tells me I burn astronomical amounts of calories biking when I always feel like I work harder running. Thanks!! Great video 🎉

you can't outrun a bad diet... and you can't outswim it but both can help, so imho, just do whichever you like more, because actually doing it because you like it burns more calories than sitting at your ass at home because you don't like the workout you picked I started with swimming and walking (if you're really overweight, long walks work too and they aren't harmful on joints as running is), after some time added bike and then running... now I can comfortably swim 3km in one session (with breaks at the wall, not in one go, at least not yet), but when I started, 200m with breaks was an achievement and I'm over 25kg down now... soooo yeah, if I can do it, you can do it

For me cycling is the go-to-method for loosing weight. You can do it for hours (or at least longer than running and swimming) and its easy to stay in a fat burning zone. Only downside is the cost

Great info. Swiming and running and cutting calories are all good for your fitbess. I'll add another factor. Stress. If you gained your weight because of stress due to work, family, illness, etc, all the exercise and dieting in the world won't work. So meditation might be added as the 3rd leg of the stool.

Exercise helps, but be very careful about eating, because it's way easier to eat calories than to exercise them off.

I do both and did also fighting sport such as boxing and muay thai and I can say that, after 17 years of swimming in a row, I've never found a sport that could give so much cardio capability and resilience as swimming...literally, your lungs and breathing abilities are superior to any other one, except for very specific qualities developed, for example, thanks to hypoxia in mountains environments. I never get really tired....I can stop 30 seconds and go back with energy, I can have muscle pain if doing exercises I'm not used to, but I don't get breathless

I'd say the one you like more - but if you like both you should stick with swimming because if you are heavy, running has a much worse impact on your joints.

I learn butterfly and backstroke since forever and love it, but once in the pool, I end with free for several minutes. Running uphills is also a great workout, very knees-friendly. However, both make me hungry (swimming more), TBH I always lose weight only when I don’t do any sporting activity

Join a Tri club, normally cheap, friendly and will coach you. I was proper nervous about the 50m pool. Within a few months I was looking forward to my Monday night swim sessions and learnt loads.

In my view swimming is much more technical - you not only have to master your stroke but you need to know how to do your sessions. If you are running for weight loss - just go for a jog and you are set. You can do so for years and still benefit from your training. If you try the same approach in swimming you quickly find your self in a trap - swimming at an easy pace quickly becomes effortless - and pointless. You still feel good in the pool but you are not training any more. Still, hitting the pool can be very good for regeneration but for weight loss you will ned more volume (intensity x distance). I am swimming with a team for nearly five years now. Still, I need a coach to keep me going. At team practice, e.g. I do most of the 100s @1:50 -2:00-- (I.e. --1:40-- and 10-20 s rest) and we do +- 3000m . When I swim alone find myself I doing much less (longer breaks between intervals and less intervals). To avoid this, I need a plan/structured workout. Running is much easier. A 60min jog is a 60 min jog. Maybe it's a personal thing but from what I see at the pool I am not the only one who struggles with discipline.

It also depends on age and how good your cardiovascular system is in the first place. As regards the physical exercise part that is.

I have to say weight loss is a bit of a problem that comes down to lifestyle, we are not so active at times and this is part of the problem. We have technology for virtually everything and we expend very little energy as a result. To say we should have an ideal weight is a bit simplistic, one size doesn’t fit all and that’s partly why we struggle so much. Breakfast is important and often overlooked by folk which is a shame, porridge is a great thing to have and you can if you have it with water and salt but that might not be for everyone, a few bits of fruit with it might be a bit more palatable and count towards your 5-a day as it were. Hydration is important too, unless you’re an elite athlete you won’t need the NASA style drinks that are expensive and can be fiddly too. After exercise a glass of milk is probably easier for the body to absorb as it’s a natural thing. You can always stick to water and add a flavoured effervescent tablet if you wish to get an electrolyte boost. Most of us know our bodies well so maybe stick with what works for you, why buy a mango drink if it’s cheap and you don’t like it? Go by what works for you and you are half way there as it were. I don’t use a Garmin or Apple watch as I am comfortable with my Omega watch that tells the time and that’s it. I work on my skill and fitness to achieve results. I think it’s probably better to get fitter and the weight will adjust accordingly. If you can manage it go meat free Monday to Friday and maybe have some meat at the weekend, I sometimes buy a half chicken and that can be easily added to make a few meals and a treat as it were. I would say if you can avoid alcohol then well done, it’s nice to have but the invisible calories add up as it were. One easier method is to try and manage your calorie intake to that of a woman, it might not work for everyone and we are all different sizes too. Avoid eating late at night and then doing a run early in the morning. Make a routine or plan that allows you to rest a little but also challenges you too. If you do 6 sessions a week try to rotate what you focus on, intensity, time or distance. You will get some times when you don’t want to push these are the where you have to use your judgment and decide what you want, if you have been doing sprints or similar you might find that running at an intermediate level allows you to comfortably run for a while and have the best of both. If you want to push for a faster sprint then rather than run up to 16kmh do it in stages, start off gently and work up to speed. 16 kmh is my max but I prefer 12.5 to 14kmh as it allows me to warm up before doing circuit training or a sinning class. I do find with swimming a good pace can be harder to achieve for a number of reasons. If the pool is really warm it will take the energy out of you and make it seem as if you are out of puff. Try swimming somewhere like the London Aquatic Centre, not easy as it were but the workout will surprise you. The best usually comes when you push yourself and the Aquatic Center is a good way to bring that out in you. The thing to decide on with weight loss or fitness is what your objective is and what sort of athlete you are. You can get fit doing a Parkrun every week but after a month it might seem a bit repetitive, cycling can be easy or hard depending on if you want to do 20 miles on a mountain bike or 200 a week on a road bike. I think it’s probably best to have someone as a training buddy or coach as they will push you and might even say something that inspires you. 5k is not far and the success of Parkrun has shown that most of us can achieve things with some effort and determination. A 10K run is a decent test too, it brings a few challenges like do I need extra hydration or a better fueling plan compared to how I do a Parkrun. The Triathlon can be a good challenge too, it sounds easy taking 3 or 4 elements and adding them together but it’s a bit more than that. I say 3 or 4 elements as not everyone sees transitioning as an element and yet it’s important to get that right, it can make a difference. A half marathon is not something you should do straight away and it does require about 6months of dedicated training and perseverance, ask a friend who did one and they can usually give a few tips or hints. In short you have to decide how far you want to go. A few sessions of exercise on a weekly basis will probably enough to keep things in shape, to get fitter do another session and increase the intensity. In the winter months maybe go swimming as that keeps you ticking over, in the warmer months go for bike rides and a run for maintenance purposes, it doesn’t have to be a military operation but make it fun and you will get more from things. Listen to your body, don’t be afraid to have a rest day it does make a difference.

Exercising efficiently and effectively is all about making your heart pump blood against the force of gravity. No exercise does that and burns more calories per hour of exercise than running. There are literally hundreds of studies showing comparisons between running, walking, swimming, biking, etc., for burning calories and for weight loss. Running is far and away the best way to do that. But running is hard (which is why it works best) so people like biking and swimming more. I find swimming very easy. I burn more calories walking 3 mph than I burn while swimming.

Hi, love them all. Running feels more sensitive. Easier to have injuries. I never had “runners high” when I been bicycling or swimming. I never had a brilliant idea when I bicycle or swim but when I been running, it happens many times. So there is something special with running even it is my worst part in the triathlon. You get both more hungry and sleepy after swimming. Same thing happens when you do Nordic skiing. My best advice if you need to loose weight is to do them both. Because then you can do some training every day. And why not mix it up with some bicycling;).

Well, now is about the time we start to see all of the "resolutioners' in the pool..... They make a New Year's resolution to exercise more. Probably 90% of them drop out after a short while. For me, it is swimming only since I am now in the titanium club, both hips and one knee.... Burn more, eat less..... I can't remember, but I think you did a comparison with bike riding and calorie burn. I am thinking that when I was biking more, it would tale almost twice the time to burn the same calories in a work out, compared to my swimming times.

here is my question. if you lose 10kg in weight when you move you "move" less weight so you calorie burn will reduce. if you have a weighted vest on would that then increase the calorie burn at the same weight?

Hi Team. It is not correct what you talking about. Science say.. high heart rate burn no fett we want lose fett so very low heart rate (fett max) and low carb eating. Because the hormones play a very big role here. Insulin stopps burning fett. So eating low cabs plus moderate continuity sport and looking for vitamins and minerals and Proteins are the key here

It is important to remember that you need to access your fat stores rather than your incoming carbo stores. The ability to having a low insulin spike is imperative to weight loss. Not all calories are the same.

All calories are the same. First law of thermodynamics states energy cannot be created nor destroyed, only converted in to another form. So whether you utilise body fat or food ate for energy, as long as you are in a calorie deficit then you will lose weight. I’m a former NHS clinical scientist and current biology teacher so please tell me that I am wrong 😑
