Swimming with Crocodiles | Extreme Underwater Encounters

Ecco un video delle mie incredibili immersioni con i coccodrilli nelle acque cristalline dell’atollo corallino del Banco Chinchorro in Messico di fine Luglio 2020. Banco Chinchorro, situato a circa 35 km al largo della costa sudorientale del Messico, nello stato del Quintana Roo, e’ il più esteso atollo corallino dell’emisfero settentrionale, Riserva della Biosfera, residenza stagionale di poche famiglie di pescatori di aragoste. Banco Chinchorro ospita anche una popolazione di circa 500 coccodrilli della specie Coccodrillo Americano (Crocodylus Acutus), che vivono in una laguna dell’isola centrale dell’atollo e che occasionalmente si spingono fino in mare nei pressi delle palafitte dei pescatori. E’proprio nei pressi delle palafitte dei pescatori che avvengono gli incontri con i coccodrilli. Prodotto di 250 milioni di anni di evoluzione, sono predatori super-efficienti e molto intelligenti, ognuno di loro con il suo carattere ben distinto. Per tutti quelli che si stanno chiedendo perche’non mi attaccano e invece mi lasciano avvicinare indisturbato, la risposta e’semplicemente che potrebbero attaccare in qualsiasi momento se ne avessero l’occasione. In linea di massima pero’, anche se questi coccodrilli ci superano in dimensioni per la maggior parte, a volte anche di molto, percepiscono un essere umano adulto “troppo grande” e quindi poco conveniente rispetto alle prede di cui sono normalmente abituati a cibarsi le cui dimensioni sono decisamente inferiori: pesci, uccelli, crostacei. Detto questo, i coccodrilli non disdegnano sicuramente prede di dimensioni maggiori e possono attaccare anche l’uomo se considerano l’occasione favorevole. La maniera “piu’ sicura” di avvicinarsi a questi coccodrilli e’ dritto di fronte a loro, zona in cui il loro campo visivo e’ limitato, e al loro stesso livello o sotto di loro nella colonna d’acqua. Di fronte perche’ solitamente quando attaccano non si lanciano in avanti ma colpiscono di lato. Sono predatori molto intelligenti e ti studiano costantemente. Molte volte succede che anche avvicinandosi di fronte, pian piano si mettono di lato pronti a sfruttare un eventuale momento di distrazione per valutare l’attacco. Mai distrarsi e mantenere sempre il contatto visivo se si nuota con i coccodrilli!
Here is a video of my incredible dives with the crocodiles in the pristine waters of Banco Chinchorro, the richest coral reef site in Mexico, home of a unique wildlife. At the end of July 2020 I traveled to Banco Chinchorro in Mexico to dive with the American crocodiles. Banco Chinchorro, located 22 miles (35 kilometers) off the south-eastern coast of the State of Quintana Roo in Mexico, is the largest atoll reef of the northern hemisphere, Biosphere Reserve and temporary residence of a small group of fishermen during lobster season. . Banco Chinchorro is also home to an estimated population of about 500 American Crocodiles (Crocodylus Acutus) that live in a lagoon of the atoll’s central island and occasionally swim into the open sea nearby the stilt houses of the fishermen. It is right nearby the stilt houses of the fishermen, in shallow waters, where the crocodile encounters take place. Product of 250 million years of evolution, these crocodiles are super-efficient and highly intelligent predators and each individual has its own personality with well defined characteristics. For those who are wondering why they don’t attack me and instead they let me approach them undisturbed, the answer is simply that they could attack at any moment if they had the opportunity. Although most of these crocodiles surpass us humans in terms of size, sometimes by far, in general they perceive a human adult as “too big” and therefore a less convenient prey compared to the ones that they usually feed on which are significantly smaller in size, such as fish, birds, crustaceans. That being said though, crocodiles certainly don’t disdain larger prey and may also attack humans should the opportunity arise. The “safest” way to approach these crocodiles is directly in front of them due to their limited visual range and at their same level or below them in the water column. Straight in front of them because usually when they strike, they snap to the side, they do not lunge forward with a bite. They are highly intelligent animals and they are constantly observing you. Their eyes are always following your movements in the water. It happens sometimes that even if they are approached from the front, they slowly but steadily position themselves on your side, ready to take advantage of any possible moment of distraction to assess the attack. Never take your eyes off the crocodile if you swim with them!
