Visiting the carnival grounds to see a few more rides set up. This time we are focusing on the Bertazzon Swing Carousel carnival ride set up.
🎡Check out all our ride setup videos: • Behind the Scenes at a...
This particular model is a Bertazzon GS 11,00/64
This is also commonly called the Wave Swinger, however "Wave Swinger" is actually the version built by ride manufacturer Zierer. (Similar to the way Kleenex is a brand not a product) The main difference between the two is the Bertazzon ride is pushed up with hydraulic cylinders, the Zierer model is pulled up with cables.
I'm fascinated by the way carnival rides are engineered to fold up and stow away for storage and travel and I seem to learn a new trick with each ride.
Thanks to Jay and the crew from Majestic Midways for giving me the opportunity to document the setup of this classic carnival ride.

Every part has a spot. It’s really easy to see if something is missing. You can see a couple shots of the central column that have places where pins are stowed just waiting for that step. The only stuff that really gets lost are the tools. They tend to get shared between rides.

This is a really good vid on setting up a swing- very detailed shots. I used to assemble and operate one of the first three Zierer Wave Swingers made- a 48 seat version. Trailerised very similarly to this one, it was the first and only travelling Swing in Australia at the time. Some notable differences in this (clearly) later model: l 1) The tower is somewhat thinner, and the two lift rams are on the outside. Ours had a single large ram in the guts of the tower, pulling cables over pulleys similar to how a forklift works. Wear was an issue, and the headpiece broke once, so I can see why this method was changed. 2) Our unit featured a maze of hydraulic plumbing and solenoid valves in the center of the trailer below deck, all operated by a simple Telemechanique computer. Basically all analogue. This is because our carousel and tower motors were hydraulic Char-lins, so there were massive swivel unions in the base of the tower, which leaked constantly whereas this unit appears to be all electrically driven. My old ride was eventually converted to full electric, kinda sad for me as I knew the old hydro system intimately, including having mapped the entire ride cycle in the computer. 3) Our decks lowered hydraulically, they had their own rams. 45 foot diam, which made our trailer overlength according to our road laws then, it also had special dispensation. Nowadays 45' container skells are commonplace. Before the electric conversion, if the computer shit itself or wouldn't cooperate, I could literally operate the ride by manipulating the valves in the deck, and so keep operating (and earning coin) until a fix was implemented. I simply needed my written program, and wristwatch to do it. I performed this job for a few years, back in the nineties, having previously built the only fully portable Wild Chipmunk rollercoaster in the world. Now my Carnie days are well and truly behind me, but i have finally begun construction of a FULLY OPERATIONAL Lego Swing model from memory of how the ride was constructed and worked. Needless to say- it's quite large, nearly 3 feet in diameter across the carousel! I may post to YT once it's completed. Thanks again, it brings back many memories.

This took two days to set up, but it was a training session with people who had never set up the ride before. Normally it takes four people 7 to 8 hours. If you notice when they’re raising the central column, the top of it is bent. That’s all there is to it - when the carriage gets pushed up and gets to the top, it follows the bent column. But that’s all hidden under the canvas top so it’s not apparent how it works

These always freaked me out as a kid. I thought you’d just be dizzy from the spinning and I didn’t wanna be sick. I think besides that, there were a few examples in tv and movies where a swing falls off and they go flying. Later on I rode the massive one that’s either in Disneyland or California Adventure, and it was fun, but I also remember it being even larger than a carnival size and the seat would twist a little bit and made it seem like I’d spin all the way around and twist the chain holding the seat. Anyway! No thanks to ever riding one again.

Not this particular one, but in the vicinity. Majestic is based out of Dover and I live near Gettysburg, so while I was driving to Delaware I was heading down 30. The York Fair ride provider for the last few years has been Strates Shows. Their swing is a true Wave Swinger made by Zierer from Germany. The main difference between the swing carousel and the wave swinger is the one is pushed up hydraulically, the other is pulled up with a cable.

should be back to a more regular release schedule now that this video is out of the way. It took forever to finish it. I had 3 cameras rolling most of the time from different angles so I wouldn't miss anything- the down side of that was that I had nearly 20 hours of footage to go through. We have had some positive progress on the rocket ride and I'm looking forward to sharing it!

I didn't feel much afraid of that, but I didn't like the idea of the centrifugal force. I used to love riding the kiddie sized Chair -o - Plane as it wasn't too fast, but I didn't graduate to the grown up sized one when I grew too big for the little one. These chair o planes didn't tilt, as a waveswinger does.
