In this video we’re playing swing conga patterns by breaking down the swing feel as a concept and applying it to some examples because a lot of great conga playing in pop music uses this style and feel with a lot of success.

I busted this out at the jazz workshop Im attending. Actually I play it before, but in a jam session 😅 I played it with a bit more notes, but I think I lost some of the swing feel due to not training enough. I have to simplify and train slower as you recommend 👍

Good idea to keep the palm tone down. Gives more accent to the 2 and 4 as well with the opens and slaps popping out more

At some pint I will. I have Royal Hartigan’s book, but I need to practice that stuff. I haven’t drummed Ewe rhythms since college. Thanks for reminding me!

Hi! I'm a drumset player, but have also played percussions in a brass for well over 10 years. Recently I've started dabbling with congas, when our band finally bought them. So I play congas now in a big band project, and I usually have just drumset sheet music in front of me while playing swing. Question is: should I also play the hits that have been written for drumset (together with horns, for example Count Basie's 'Switch In Time' ~ 0:42 - 0:55 has lots of them), OR should I just keep playing the swing groove you demonstrated through those parts? My guts tell me to play the music, i.e. play the hits, but on the other hand, having a simple, stable element in the complex music does bring clarity to the song, so I'm a bit unsure. What did the old cats play back in the day? What's the norm?

My teacher always told me that with a big band, you play the hits with the ensemble when it's in louder dynamics and groove through the rest. ... For small group stuff, I usually groove through hits with an occasional hit with the band to support the musical phrasing. ... As for what the old cats played? I couldn't tell you. Most of the swing conga drumming I've heard on old albums was small group and mostly grooving through the hits. ... But I think you have to make the decision for yourself. If you like it one way or the other, that's your decision as a musician. If the music director wants you to pay through or with the hits, that's there decision. That's how I approach it.
