I like how it starts out fairly conventional and then just devolves into total chaos. It fleshes out like a vivid nightmare and then ends abruptly as if you just woke up from a vivid melatonin dream. After you watch it and think back on it it, seems almost like your wondering if you really saw it.

Axel TUBE That's interesting. maybe it's because they're a moment in time gone, like an old photograph. you wonder about who watched this or who made it, all in a graveyard now. Did you notice some of the graves had stones drawn on them, the old Jewish custom maybe? Anyway, they are creepy like midevil art or Mayan carvings but cool and historical.

I mean yeah, there’s several reasons for that: The cartoon itself is pretty dark. All the people who wrote/performed this music and voice acted/animated this cartoon are dead. Or maybe it’s the fact that Fleischer Studios went bankrupt, and the fact that common-rights cartoons from failed 80-year-old animation studios scare you.

Moral of the story: Don’t steal from henhouses, don’t gamble, don’t sexually assault women, don’t wander into empty graveyards at night, don’t be a 1930s cartoon, never run into a barn, don’t take psychedelic drugs, et cetera. I mean honestly, so much happens in this cartoon that there’s easily three pages of morals I could write here.

It's great how so many people realize that 3:28 is in fact the inspiration for Cagney Carnation. However, at 6:53, that is the inspiration for the man in the pond that tells you how any times you have died. It should be no coincidence that you'll find Cuphead inspirations in these old-timey cartoons. That's what the game was made after anyways.

It still does, and while I'm not hating on this a few parts of kind of look like they were added in because it's what they thought of at the time. The point is obviously he's being haunted because he sinned, but some of the things he sees, like the frog towards the end seem to be just... there.

why did Disney get all the fame and glory? these Fleicher cartoons were so creative, albeit edgy.
@bleepiestofbloops
@bleepiestofbloops 7 жыл бұрын
moonbeast32 Think you answered your own question. Disney was more family friendly. 1934, the Hayes Code was introduced and movies became a lot cleaner, which kinda ruined Fleischer's edgy formula. Betty Boop went from being massively popular to being eclipsed by the other characters in her shorts over night. Could also be that Disney was a studio and brand of its own. Fleischer was just making cartoons for Paramount. Betty Boop and Popeye are still famous characters, but there was no Fleischer Studios brand to put them under the way we consider Goofy a Disney character.
@wratched
@wratched 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah. She had a lot of characters in her shorts... Anyhoo, one problem with Fleischer is that his cartoons were always so topical. Steamboat Willie could be from any time, but Betty Boop could only be a flapper. And this soundtrack, cool as it is, was never going to survive the Jazz age.

moonbeast32 For some reasons, why did'nt Disney cooperated with The Fleischer Bros. for new projects (Fleischer created Gulliver's Travel in a more Disney way)? And why do Disney and the Fleischers are rivals in the first place?

And the officer, that's Rumor Honeybottoms's first phase. And near the end when the skeletons fuse together, you see Dr. Kahl's face. When he disappears, Croaks starts singing. And see that slime in the farm? That's from the level Forest Follies, and an unused slime in Goopy's last phase. And the pole is one of the pole singers. I got all these from the longer Cuphead Portrayed By Swing You Sinners. Edit: and the dragon is Grim Matchstick.

*Lyrics* You sinners, drop everything, Let the harmony ring, Up to Heaven and sing, Swing you sinners! Just wave your arms all about, Let the Lord hear you shout. Pour the music right out, Swing you sinners! Whenever there’s music, The Devil kicks. He don’t allow music By the river Styx. You’re wicked and you’re depraved, And you’ve all misbehaved. If you wanna be saved, Swing you sinners! Good night, this is your finish, brother. You’re never going to get away. “Oh no!” “Oh yes!” You’ll never rob another hen-house! You’ve sinned, and now you must ordain. “Oh no.” “Oh yes.” We’re going to pulverize you brother (Ya needed it!) And scatter all your bones away. Chickens you used to steal- I don’t steal no more! Craps you used to shoot- I don’t shoot no more! Girls you used to chase- I don’t chase no more. Get ready, brother, your time has come! Stand up you sinner, We’ve got you at last. You can’t get away, there’s no time to pray, Your finish is going to be fast. Brothers and sisters, Come on get hot. We’ll amputate your vo-do-de-o And tie your bones in a knot. - Brother, you sure are gonna get your face lifted! - And a permanent shave! - Where you want your body set? - Body? Huh! Ain’t gonna be no body! You can’t make any excuse, So you’ll quail in your boots ‘Till we’ve picked up the noose, Swing you sinners! For making chickens elope, You’re at the end of your rope, So just give up all hope, Swing you sinners! We’ll stretch you like a giraffe, Maybe cut you in half, Just to give us a laugh, Swing you sinners!

faryngiovaniello Probably because of the fact that people don’t exactly find the idea of surrealist ghosts sending a dog to Hell for stealing from a henhouse appealing anymore.

faryngiovaniello I wouldn't want to show this to kids, but a horror movie based around a demonic, reality-warping cartoon could be really cool. Basically like all the stuff with evil clowns, but with a different "this was supposed to be funny in the early 20th century but now it just looks creepy" theme for the antagonist.
