When I was about 15 or so, my parents took me to see Benny play at Towson State with a small group. At the end of the concert he hung around on the stage and I decided to approach him. He was gracious beyond belief with a young brat like me. I was an avid flea marketer at that time and had a lot of 78 rpm records, I mentioned that I had him on a lot of 1920'S Ben Pollack records. Benny's face lit up " Man, you mean people still listen to that stuff, that's dinosaur music" he meant it fondly, as he said it with a smile on his face. I then shook his hand and we both said goodbye. I was happy at the moment but now I realize what a great moment it was. I am now 60 and make my living as a stride and cocktail pianist. God bless.

Absolutely awesome. What a trumpet section, not to mention the saxes. Total class and it will never die. Would that we had such bands in every state of the union. Long live Benny Goodman and his music. That would help return our country back to sanity and civility.

He was one of the greats--and this arrangement, it's one of the best Fletcher Henderson wrote for Goodman--still a thrill to hear it so many decades later. Goodman was in excellent form here and he had a terrific (probably pick-up) band behind him; I think that's what sparked him. Thanks for sharing this!
@BertBrandsma-ir8qt Жыл бұрын
Fletcher composed it for his own band, and then later just transcribed his own record a year later for Benny. In Fletcher's band, the parts were not written out properly, they were half head arrangements, as Coleman Hawkins described in several interviews.

I remember seeing this and how greatly impressed I was with this (likely) pick up band. They were terrific and I'm sure it buoyed Benny (whom I met!) on to play at his best in some years. An excellent "Last Hurrah" for The King of Swing, Benny Goodman!
@bblegacy Жыл бұрын
It was NOT a "pick-up" band. Benny began the preparations for this, (which was a PBS TV special), at least six months before this event. His administrative assistant (Loren Schoenberg, seen in this video playing Tenor Sax) had a band of his own for a while in NY and ultimately, BG used most of Loren's musicians and brought in other "old hands" - Danny Bank on Baritone Sax, Eddie Bert on Trombone and Paul Cohen on Trumpet (all three of which had worked with BG in his various bands since the 1940s). Drummer Louis Bellson and Bassist Bob Haggart need no introduction as jazz giants, first-call studio musicians going back to the 1930s (at least in Haggart's case), in addition to having worked for BG in the past also. In any event, Goodman THOROUGHLY rehearsed this band throughout the months leading up to the TV special, and the band had played some private function dates before the "big event" shown here that was filmed at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Times Square in November 1985. This wasn't just 16 anonymous guys "picked-up" for one night to sight-read a big band gig by any stretch of the imagination.

I was born in the late 80s and I grew up playing rock and metal music, until I was 20. Then I just realize I was born to tell everyone in this earth about this music, it's all about swing! I wanna make this music everlasting! Long Live Benjamin David Goodman. Greetings from Indonesia.

That's not the fault of "real" musicians. It's the music business and lazy couch potatoes that can't get their hind ends off of a couch watching television long enough to go out to PAY to hear real musicians, who are no less professional than doctors, lawyers or accountants and don't just work for tips or give their craft away for nothing just because some "entitled" audience made up of people of any age thinks "real" musicians should be exempt from being paid like any other professional in any other field.

Benny gave "the ray" to more cats than can be imagined. Laurie Frink is playing lead, Benny put Paul Cohen on the 4th book that night. True story!
@ABrandsma10 жыл бұрын
I first heard the story from Randy Sandke. Recently I got it confirmed from Loren Schoenberg. Loren told me that Benny was reacting a bit strange to the idea having a woman in the trumpet section, and in fact more or less in the last number of the rehearsal that same day did switch the books, just to try her out. She did such a fantastic job then that he decided to keep it for the evening. According to Randy he made the decision only short before the start of the show, so Laurie did great things playing the lead chair for the first time here, without proper rehearsal on this book!

@callmeBe13 жыл бұрын
Note how chrisp those upbeats are in the final measure--the attacks and decays in tutti are on the money every time--also not rushing. Further, if you listen closely you can clearly hear the decending bass line (trb III and bari sax and contrabass), which is wonderful--fancy that, an decending bass line vs. an asending lead!! Henderson was classically trained, of course. And, Goodman was very respectful of that, also having a moderate classical background.
