The first era of the A’s in Oakland, known as the “Swingin’ A’s,” won three consecutive World Series championships in the early 1970s, something only one other Major League franchise (the Yankees) has ever been able to equal. The A’s 1972 World Series win was also the Bay Area’s first professional championship.
The 1972 team, known as The Mustache Gang, won 93 games and another division title in 1972. Facial hair aside, this team was about dominant pitching. Five starters posted ERAs better than 3.00. The leader of the pack was Catfish Hunter, who had arguably the best season of his Hall of Fame career, going 21-7 with a 2.04 ERA.
Catcher Gene Tenace belted four homers in the series, including two in the team’s Game 1 victory. The A’s won the World Series in seven games-six of them decided by one run-and Tenace won the MVP Award. Oakland returned home to be celebrated by the entire Bay Area, which had never seen one of its teams win a championship in any major professional sport before the A’s.

That catch by Rudy was one of the best ever. I remember it being on the LP cover of The Swinging A's 1972 recap. As kids we always emulated that catch

This has been unaccounted for in the MLB vaults for decades. FINALLY, it's great to see it liberated. And boy, what a reminder of how poor off we've been that Al Michaels hasn't called a World Series since 1995.

Incredible how fast Catfish worked. Seems like he throws a pitch every ten seconds. Young Al Michaels on the call. Very cool

Outstanding picture quality. It's like it's 1972 and I'm 9 years old, sitting cross-legged on the living room floor eating a silver foil wrapped Hershey bar and watching the World Series on our Magnavox color TV. :-D

The A's were not only the best team fundamentally but they were also the best looking team, Even back then they had different varieties of uniforms.

YES! I felt certain that this game existed on video. In Ken Burns Baseball documentary from the early 90's there were a few brief broadcast clips from this series that gave me hope, but 'experts' would say "no they were wiped." Yet here it is.
