There’s actually a really cool story that goes with this. They’d played Club Clearview the night before and it was a 21 and up show and a lot of younger people showed up and weren’t able to get in. When they found out about it they agreed to stay the night at Johnny’s house and play his backyard for all those kids who hadn’t gotten to see them…so, if you needed a reason to like these guys even more…

Swirlies are definitely one of the most underrated bands I can think of. Lots of people are quick to cite influences from Sonic Youth and MBV. Not to discredit those opinions, but I do think Swirlies have a one of a kind sound. No other shoegaze band used such dynamic song structures. Their music still remains very catchy as well. They tapped into a style of music unlike anything else I’ve ever heard
@dpclerks093 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. One of the only shoegaze bands that didn't try to directly ape MBV or go for the spacey reverb drenched sound. They're good songwriters too, and not in the conventional sense, which is more interesting. A fun, wildly creative band that still retains pop sensibilities. The world needs more bands that share the spirit of SWIRLIES.

I saw them less than a month before this show in Cincinnati. I was so excited I showed up early and ran into some guy who wanted to know where the closest grocery store was. Turned out it was Ben, the drummer. They sounded so incredibly huge live, and deserved a way bigger crowd than what was there (probably 15 people who stayed after the opening band finished). I talked to them afterwards and they were super nice and gracious. Seana Carmody's solo album, "Struts & Shocks" is great as well.

They were a pretty marginal band back then, and even more so when you listen today. Lots of noise and purposely off key shit, which, because of the weakness in the playing and compositon doesn't age well. But their worst sin was having a woman on rhythm guitar. She slows them down and hasn't the strength to play through this kind of schlock...
