Yeah, my casement window locking handle broke in the locked position. Grrrr!! One consolation was that I wasn’t alone in this situation. Very thankful for the many comments, suggestions, and videos. I tried the butter knife/putty knife/screwdriver prying method….but it will not work with this type of locking handle. This locking handle is designed to be “highly pick-resistant” with a housing frame that extends in to the cutout of the window frame. Rather puzzling why anyone would pick a window locking handle……that’s on the interior side…..??? Anyheew….. I watched instructional videos of how to change the locking handle…..only useful if you can open the window. And watched a video of a fellow sawing off the surface of the locking handle…..Yikes!! A bit extreme, me thinks. So….. I drilled a hole through my locking handle...straight through the front and just above the handle hinge. Started with nail poke to keep the drill bit from slipping. Then drilled through with the skinniest drill bit, then drilled again with a bit wider drill bit, then drilled again with a 3/16” drill bit. Then inserted a poker screwdriver to push down the fork mechanism (by levering the screwdriver handle upwards). Voila! The window unlocked. I was able to crank open the window to gain access to the screws and replace with a new locking handle. You’re welcome!

I will definitely be trying your method. Ours broke the other night in the locked position. Thanks for your comment.

@@Dbroda-uz1yj How did it work out for you? I posted a "video" on my account, if you want to see what it looks like after drilling.

@@janieqtee1901 I actually called the window company. That gave me the parts for free and showed me how to do it. I removed the screen and stuck a butter knife between the window and seal above the lock and just pulled down to release the lock. They also told me to spray white lithium grease into the latches to keep them sliding freely.

My lock levers require way too much force to fully lock them. Is there a way to adjust this?

Hmm, you may need a new operator. I would ask our experts! www.swisco.com/page-id-part

I have a similar issue with my windows but the locking handle mechanism locked the window, I can't open the window to change or remove the broken handle piece! How do I remove it? Frustrating....
@SWISCO4 жыл бұрын
Ah, this isn't the most fun. First, try your best to force it open with whatever you have on hand. If you really can't get it, I'm sorry to say it'll need to be cut out. You'll most likely want to call a local handyman to do it for you. Good luck with it!

wait @0:25 how do you remove the latch?
@SWISCO3 жыл бұрын
The latch can be removed once you open the window and gain access to the mounting screws. Just remove the two screws and the lock should come right out.

We have thermotech casement windows and one locking latch has disconnected from the locking mechanism. We can not unlock the window to open it and replace the locking lever. How would I go about unlocking the window? Thank you

my latch just disconnected as well, I hope there is a simple solution to this ! If you have found a solution, please share ! thank you.

Yes there is. Take a putty knife and insert it between the window and the rubber seal gently. Using the putty knife as a feeler gauge probe gently up and down the window to learn where the actuator fork is. Insert the putty knife or other thin metal tool on top of the fork and push down to unlock the window. It may take some body weight pushing down to move the fork Once unlocked, you ought to be able to crank the window open. (this is for Thermotech casement windows)

Thanks for the quick reply sir ! I will try this.

Thermotech explained to me how to do this and my buddy who works at the lumber yard came over and watched as I did it.

what if window is locked closed presently

Unfortunately there's no easy solution to this. You could try manually throwing the lock with a screwdriver, but if that doesn't work you will need to find some way to cut it out. We highly recommend hiring a local contractor for further assistance.

explain that screwdriver thing??

@Damien Schafer Just did the same thing and this works... butter knife slides in and can move the lock bar up and down. Thanks.
