He says “it’s not ideal, but it’s all I have room for, so I make it work”. That’s the point in which that saying really kicked in, it’s in the craft-person, not the tool.

I love the philosophy of buying cheapo tools to see how much you use/need it before getting something nicer later when it breraks. 3:39 Im wondering now - how with saving weight on spacecraft, you can stay in orbit longer? Something does not make sense here. Isn't weight a factor only at launch?
@Damicske Жыл бұрын
How furter from earth how longer you can stay in orbit, else the vehicle will come back faster and more weight = faster de-orbit (is that correct @astranisspace)
@mirandahw Жыл бұрын
@@Damicske not quite - higher weight = requires more energy (and thus more propellant) to perform stationkeeping (i.e. staying in one spot), so if you can build a lighter sat, you can use less propellant, which weighs less, which uses less prop, etc etc.
@fabiusweissenfels1239 Жыл бұрын
In addition some satellites use thrusters for station keeping and you get more delta V per propellant if your satellite is lighter.
@sebzim4500 Жыл бұрын
With a lower mass, they can boost the same amount of dv with less fuel
@jamesmnguyen Жыл бұрын
The satellite has to use its own fuel to complete the final burn to a circular orbit. The lighter the craft, the less fuel is spent doing that burn and more fuel is leftover for stationkeeping.

If you're looking for a much better manual lathe with a similar footprint (rather than getting a large, free standing machine), I cannot over-recommend getting an old South Bend Model A, B, or C. They can be found for only a bit more than a new chinesium eBay lathe, and they're about the same size (9in), but the quality is *massively* better. Unlike any current-production lathe in that size range, South Bend lathes were designed to be used in professional tool rooms, highschool shop classes, or in production making small parts. They're industrial-grade machine tools which happen to be quite small, rather than low cost tools made for hobbyists. There are a ton of parts still available for them as well, and a number of upgrades you can make to bring them up to modern standards. I have a Model C which was made in 1936, and I updated it with a serpentine belt, a quick change tool post, modern carbide tooling, and a DRO. Seriously, don't be put off by the fact that a good chunk of them were made before WWII. They absolutely slap, and they'll machine circles around any 9in lathe made today.

The thing with lathes is that they really don't break unless you do something really bad to them. So at some point you just need to bite the bullet and buy a better one. In my experience old lathes are far superior to new lathes. If a lathe has lived for 80 years, survivor bias alone means its a good machine. I've got a 1943 Monarch 16CY lathe. It's a massive beast. It's little brother the 10EE is one of the most wanted lathes. The larger machines are actually easier to get because not everyone has the room for them. I'd love to find a smaller lathe that turns faster for dong small diameter work but they are super hard to find and very expensive when you do find them on the market. I think at this point, if I had the money to buy a new lathe, it would be a CNC lathe. I've learned all I'm going to learn about turning on a manual machine, it's time to go CNC. I run a CNC router at my day job and I can make most anything from flat stock on that machine.

Probably radiation cross-linked ETFE insulated lightweight equipment wire. It's the stuff they use in all high-reliability equipment (aerospace, space, military, very high-end industrial etc). There are specialty variants with low-outgassing characteristics for outer space applications, which probably costs a fortune.
