I grew up in the Midwest and my Mom made Swiss Steak frequently and it was always a tomato based sauce, actually like stewed tomatoes on top in a tomato based broth, too. And, with mashed potatoes, too. Delicious and memories! Thank you, Amy.

I am in KY. When I make Swiss Steak I add tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, fresh cremini Mushrooms, garlic and I use either a round steak or a sirloin tip steak. I braise mine like you did either in the oven or crock pot. I usually serve ours with baked potatoes. I like to put the tomato sauce and vegetables over top the potatoes instead of using butter or sour cream.

Chris talks about the cream soup his grandma used. I grew up in Northern Illinois. I use basically the same recipe but with 2 tweaks. When I tenderize the meat, I pound seasoned flour into it to help with the thickening. Also when I make the sauce, I add 1 can of either golden mushrooms or beefy mushroom soup. It makes a richer sauce withe the tomatoes and veggies. So good.

Your grocery store meat counter will run the Swiss steak thru their meat tenderize for you even if u purchased it prepackaged, they will open it up and it takes literally 5 seconds to run it thru the electric tenderizer. It will make it much more tender than beating it with the meat malet.
