I've had a friend these past 30 years who now flies A380s for Emirates, about to retire. He is Swiss, and started out flying Swissair MD-80s, then DC-10s, and transitioned to MD-11s when Swissair got the first ones around 1991. He told me that the DC-10 was a pleasure to fly, inherently very balanced. If properly trimmed, on a manual approach you could let go of the controls and barring wind gusts the plane would want to stay right on path and glide slope. But he said the MD-11 was a very different beast. The change in the fuselage length was not matched with any changes in the empennage (the tail assembly), and the inherent stability of the DC-10 was gone. Landing the MD-11 felt like you were fighting it the whole way. From what he told me, it hardly seems surprising that the MD-11 has an unusually high hull-loss rate on landing, particularly where the plane flips onto its back.

Look at the size of the MD-11 horizontal stab vs the ones on the DC-10. The lsas was supposed to give the smaller elevator the same equivalent authority or something like that, but saving weight. Add that plus a longer fuselage and you have a handful of plane to fly.

Planes that are not 'naturally stable' have one big advantage over very stable planes. They are much more maneuverable so in a dogfight this can mean the diffence between victory or death. Veteran pilots will have no issue with these types of planes (Fokker Dr.I, F4U Corsair (or 'Ensign Killer') but these planes have a tendency to kill off inexperienced fighter pilots. What, the MD-11 is not a fighter plane?

The reason why so many MD-11s landed in cargo is their terrible fuel efficiency. Cargo planes spend a lot more time on the ground, making it more economical to own old planes.

I don't think cargo planes spend a lot of time on ground though. Since planes only makes money when they are flying, it wouldn't make any business sense to have a plane that is fuel thirsty and staying on the ground more than flying in the skies

for me, (im not an actual md-11 pilot, only in x-plane) i flew the md-11 and I landed it a very smooth a few times and i fly it with a mouse yoke just to make it harder but its easy for me

As someone who worked on these as a mechanic, they are not that fun to work on. We always made the joke that MD-11s only had one engine, the #2. The major issue with keeping these flying, seems to me, is cost. When Boeing took Douglas, I am sure they planned on the 11 going away fairly quickly, without thinking of it's cargo capability which rivals the 777. Parts and reliability is what is rapidly killing the ones that are left. Another issue with it's stability is the fact that it's horizontal stab is considerably smaller than the DC=10, when you account for the engine on the tail as well, I would imagine that putting it on the wheels gently would be a little more difficult.

Its actually easy, get the speed down to 170 kts and try to keep it straight then pitch down, then throw the throttle to 0. Boom reverse thrust
