Honestly I love the red Nintendo has been using throughout the switch generation and I kinda hope it sticks around with the Switch 2 in some way. With Microsoft and Sony using green and blue respectively, the red really pops out and feels iconically Nintendo imo.

I think this one is quite a stretch, grey for a museum makes sense, as grey is a timeless color that won’t age poorly. Honestly going back to the purple of the GameCube could really fit a more powerful switch 2, since at the time the GameCube also tried to compete on a power front instead of going blue ocean. Plus it’s both a cool and playful color, which could pair well with the original switch’s sharp red

I wish they'd use leather brown as the "stronger red" like Wii U's blue highlight. Ideally the new magnetic joycon should have like a jokey, mario's shoe vibe. Even put the box signifier in the bottom corner and let it expand towards the spine, so a row of Switch and Sw2 games are a mix of non-clashing brown and red. The logo should be the outline of Cappy's eyes, or similiar thing of a new characer, I'm gonna give credit to Meta's logo but only in design. This logo should always finish the shoe at the top end of boxes, and harken back to SMB with all the elements having a pair of eyes. Ditch the red, keep red for the Switch and release a Switch Micro, with a line of games downscaled in production and be more handheld-focused, almost like VMU.

The Wii had an unquestionable “personality” in terms of design. The console was white and the OS was also white. With the Switch, even though at launch there was a grey one and a red/blue one, the logos, game boxes, and all the promotional material was red, and for some reason there’s practically no red to be found in the OS. It feels like something is missing. And even after 7 years we still only have a dark and a light mode theme for the OS. It’s like they gave up trying to make the OS interesting, fun, and unique.
@maxonite2 ай бұрын
Even now at the very end knowing they will probably never come, Im still and will forever be upset that they never introduced themes for the Switch. The switch has the dullest interface ever in a nintendo product. The only nice thing is the colorful bottom row of icons that gives a hint of nintendos usual fun-loving philosophy. They even hinted at the possibility of more themes coming right from the launch by having a seperate "theme" section in the settings, but I guess they scrapped the idea after a while and just kept "basic white" and "basic black" as the only options forever, which now just makes that section seem like a sad redundance…

I do think the brand color of the successor is going to be substantially different from the Switch's red even if for only one reason: I expect that Switch 1 will still be getting a decent number of games until at least the middle of 2027, and with the new system being inevitably backwards-compatible, they'd probably want to advertise those as both playable for Switch 1 and 2 on the packaging (at the very least the ones that get some sort of cross-gen enhancement patch). I bring this up because you can clearly see how Nintendo has repeatedly thrown all their chips into this approach in the era of competing with Sony and Microsoft. They never do simple iteration. Never. It's really hard to say what direction Nintendo will go, but I imagine in the light of the current competition, with systems that will likely still outpower it specs-wise, they're going to keep doubling down on being different.

I get why they would do gray do expand to a more mature audience, but I hope they don't. The gray color that Switch launched with felt like it was trying too hard to seem like a sleek and low-profile "mid-2010s" smartphone/tablet, and it was quite boring and felt insecure. 2020s graphic design allows for bolder, more vibrant, atypical colors, and I hope they do that. A turquoise, pink, orange, yellow, or less-common variant of a color (I'd love a rich green, but would understand why they would avoid that to steer clear of Xbox) for the next console would be so cool. They are already fighting an uphill battle to make "Switch 2" feel like a new generation and not just a "pro" variant, and I think reusing the same shade of red, the logo, the system OS design, or name would hurt them in that pursuit. A complete overhaul of the visual identity of the system would really make it feel like its own system that the less-informed would perceive as *new*.

Fascinating timing cuz I was LITERALLY thinking about this exact topic today First of all I don’t think Nintendo wants to go back to their old gray logo/brand (it’s what they used to have during Wii-Wii u era) they likely did it for the museum to differentiate it from their gaming side to establish it as a museum and not a theme park or such And as you mentioned I hardly see them making game boxes gray or such and there’s hardly a reason to move away from the red I do think they will keep up with their bold color choices there could be a chance that they keep the red and make a minor change (like introducing black) after all branding around DS and 3DS wasn’t different with only minor changes like addition of red It’s also important to address that colors grab people’s eyes red is such an amazing color that grabs people’s eyes it’s what grabbed my eyes when I first saw the switch’s first trailer on KZbin’s trending page back in 2016 and it’s also the color that best fits them and are now recognized for so I think it’d be foolish to leave it and I too would be gutted if it’s gone Perhaps purple or a shade of blue can be used as options but I’m not sure myself, I also don’t see then using pink or orange or yellow. Personally I’m inclined to believe in the idea switch 2 will have colored buttons (due to paper Mario TTYD having it and having 4K support) perhaps gray can be used for a basic model to reflect the SNES and stand out from the dark gray/black of OG switch and white of switch OLED and ps5 while also having a colored version I am curious about the color they’ll use part of me can’t help but feel that future directs won’t have that same bold red and white mix perhaps they’ll go for a quieter tone of red or use purple similar to game cube or perhaps they’ll just switch their overall brand like making the text red and backgrounds white an inverse of what they have for branding At least those are my ideas. I just hope that the bold colors remain and we aren’t stuck with another boring gray,black, or white in my eyes I do think that the world and times are moving towards more color and customization and switch is an example of it

Interesting topic, but eh, I don't think Nintendo are going to change from the red anytime soon (at least for the Switch 2). You made the case that the Nintendo Museum's logo is gray and how it being the most recent thing could be notable, but I'd also point to how Nintendo's HQs have switched their gray Nintendo logo out front for the bold red. That gray Nintendo logo was there for many years, and they recently just decided to change it this year. I'd also mention how the logo for Nintendo Pictures, a branch of Nintendo arguably more contemporary than the museum just by virtue of them not doing much as of yet, has their logo red. For a branch of Nintendo that's bound to be of great importance in the coming years (but not as much right now), why would Nintendo not future-proof their logo by having it another color than red? At this point, I think it's pretty safe to say that red is Nintendo's color. Heck, the Switch is Nintendo's most successful consope behind the DS (which will be toppled soon, I imagine), so I don't think they'd want to mess with much in the Switch 2 transition (even the color)

TBH it'd make sense if they moved back to white + light blue at some point in a minor way like a collectors edition console. By some metrics Wii/DS was the largest cultural footprint Nintendo ever had and we are starting to see a wave of 2000s nostalgia with Avatar/One Piece Netflix shows & Linkin Park on tour again or something ATM (IDK music well lol). I could see them doing a 2000s throwback for there brand ala Stranger Things riffing on 1980s vibes or Pleasentville riffing on 1950s vibes. They've toyed with that sorta gimmick in the bast with the Famicom Gameboy micro at the height of NES nostalgia and the Game & Watch throwback hardware. Hell, I think New 3DS had a Super Famicom controller color scheme for one of the models. Could totally seethe Switch successor (or its respective controller) having white or light blue as color options.

The "Nintendo Switch 2 or Super Nintendo Switch" image features a logo inspired by the Joy-Cons, with colorful buttons reminiscent of the Super Famicom. The vibrant background in shades of orange, red, and yellow conveys energy and excitement, while the white font provides contrast and clarity. The design suggests an evolution of the original Switch, maintaining a connection to Nintendo's legacy while highlighting a modern and engaging aesthetic.

That grey is starting to be considered very millennial in the west, it’s falling out of favour in design circles, I’m not sure if that translates to Japan but I don’t think Nintendo of America or Europe will want to lean into that audience. I’d personally go with an orange. It’s similar by distinct to the Switch era red, but feels much fresher. Using it in a similar way to the Wii U’s use of that lovely sky blue. An accent colour.

RGB lights are quite popular with PC gamers, but I never saw them on a console. Food for thought.

Hear me out: The switch 2 has mostly white joy cons with red and blue buttons respectively. The colour will be purple to represent the 2 colours. This is distinct enough to be recognised as its own comsole while still being recognizable as a switch

I immediately thought about a dark grey as well at the beginning of the video myself I can't picture a hot pink 😂 yellow, blue, orange or whatnot. Claret could work, or a light grey blue ("shadowgrey") but I doubt it. I also HIGHLY doubt they're going brown, it just doesn't work.

I think a black dark grey switch 2 will show its difference to the OLED one being white. While a grey logo will remain. Games will keep the token red design but likely have a grey/black band at the top to show they’re switch 2 games only.

This is an interesting question I haven’t seen posed yet. I think I’ve just assumed it would stay the same, but that runs the risk of not differentiating the successor from the switch. I could see a return to a shade of blue
@sophiaoconnell1927Ай бұрын
I think the grays and black and whites trend was more of a late 2010s trend that has lingered on slightly but there’s no way Nintendo releases a product half way through the 2020s based on the aesthetics of the 2010s. Even Sony realized that their black and white aesthetic was dated by the time it came out because they very quickly released controllers and console panels to add some color. If Xbox didn’t have green locked down already that would be my first guess but since it’s not I’m going with either orange or a return to purple since GameCube nostalgia is ripe for picking. I also think it’s totally possible that Nintendo has seen so much success with red that they stick with it. Especially if the console is named something related to switch. I definitely don’t think it’s gonna be any sort of slate gray. That goes against actual current 2020s trends and Nintendo’s brand as a portal to child like wonder.

What a fun topic to chew on. I think they have to keep red in some capacity to preserve brand recognition. Nintendo have said that a key goal of theirs for the Switch successor is to move as many Switch users over to it as possible, and that vibrant fire-engine red was front and center in the marketing for the entirety of a legacy-defining console era, so I think it makes sense to expect its inclusion in the marketing from here on in. The question is how Nintendo could lead consumers to associate red with the Switch successor instead of the Switch, and I see two paths for that: alter the shade of red (I'd personally like to see them go with something a little more subdued, maybe even closer to a brick red. Something dignified and prestige) and/or change the accent colors. Red's a high-energy color, so it could even be the accent color and take a backseat role to another color without losing its impact. As for console colors, I really disliked the charcoal color of the Switch console, and never felt it harmonized with the vibrant red they used so prominently in the marketing. It was just too high-contrast and made the console look dark and ugly to me. I'd like to see more harmony between the hardware color and the marketing styling this go around. Something lighter and warmer would appeal to me.

There's been some discussion -- the "color buttons" theory -- that Nintendo could be preparing to go back to the SuFami with the next Switch. Similar to the New 3DS, bringing back the green, yellow, blue and red into their designs. Thinking about that, the console box for the Super Famicom in Japan was a neutral gray, while the colors were used in a sort of "neon line art". But if you look at the boxes for Super Famicom games, they were kind of color coded with wide swatches -- black, green, red, blue, gray, yellow... Either way, I do think red will still feature as a symbol the Switch Successor is in the same "family" and "backward compatible" -- but I do think the console boxes and even game boxes will be "grounded" with a neutral color to make whatever new console logo / symbol POP.

Oh I LOVED the purple color theme of the GameCube. I am biased since it was my first home console ever but they were specific with that color. If you noticed, Super Smash Bros Melee's entire esthetic truly was the perfect launch title for the GCN, as Melee is heavily based on the colors Purple, black, and red, JUST like the GameCube. From the Menu, to the techo-futuristic backgrounds, the 80/90/s techno music, even to how each character entered the stage. Mario Kart DD and Kirby Air Ride always had a "GameCube" like color theme in some ways. It just fit. It felt so futuristic and cool. The marketing campaigns with the whisper of "GameCube", to the "Who Are You" campaigns, the music, the Gameboy Advance also having those colors, with DS closing in later...it gave of a mysterious yet innocent like vibe. Wii was was more expressive and open with it's white, "for everyone" appeal, and Wii followed with that with light blue and so on. But GCN, REALLY was "for the gamers." I'm glad the Switch felt a little bit closer to the GCN with that aspect, so I hope the Switch's successor goes a similar GCN route with it's color theme.

Definitely a change for differentiation. Hoping for a return to the GBA’s Indigo and Fuschia. (edit: and translucent glacier!!) But mainly- the tablet itself needs to match the joycons! Not as universally swappable as the current black tablet and joycons, but it was so boring to all have a black unit (other than the Mario OLED back and LABO special edition, AFAIK?)

man i really hope they don't go with slate grey, we've got enough drain of colors in our modern society right now. the color and detail in graphic design and architecture has been drained out of everything and i'd absolutely hate to see Nintendo continue down this road along with the rest of society. It might be enough to get me to not buy at launch until they came out with some better colors.

I strongly associate Yellow with Gameboy Color, though from Google Images it appears Blue might've been a tad more popular. I think any color other than black, white or grey would stand out (from other consoles). I'm surprised Apple killed color with the iPhone 5c, although you can still get Project Red. Might be different for phones since cases are fairly common. I think portability and color go well together, although I don't know if in some cultures or age groups it'd be seen as a bit too disruptive/attention grabbing to have a colorful device. A large majority of new cars in Australia are black, white or grey too. Also a very small point but I *am* a fan of your use of "schizophrenic" here. It's a good word in this context. I think in general colorful language and colorful... colors are good for the world.
