I got mine in 2017 and the battery life was always a giant reason why I preferred hand held to dock. 3 hours on a fully charge battery for mhr or botw was extremely annoying on my vacations. I think it's pretty safe to assume all new special edition consoles will either be the OLED or the Switch Lite (new pokemon game has a switch lite coming) considering those are what's going to sell going forward. They should just axe the "red box" Switch right now, make way for a $300 price point for the OLED model. That would garner more adoption IMO. I’ve always been a docked player so I wasn’t sure if the OLED would be justified at first, but after playing a few hours of Metroid in handheld then going back to my TV, the quality was so much better on the OLED that I’ll probably be playing more handheld just for the image quality in the future. @Buglin_Burger78783 жыл бұрын
It likely isn't the quality is better, rather the image gets stretched out more on the tv. Take pixel art as an example or if this text, if you make these letters just 3-4x bigger you'll see the pixels and it will look worse. The quality is the exact same. This is what happens if you just make it flat out bigger. If you put time and effort though you can smooth out the edges and make it look much better.
@MrMoon-hy6pn3 жыл бұрын
@@Buglin_Burger7878 Sure a tv will take up more physical space, but it might only take up the same amount of space in your field of view as a switch would. The colours are the difference here, lcd's just produce less vibrant light than an oled display would due to the entire display being backlit (blacks are usually a dark grey, backlight bleed also doesn't help) as a result the image gets slightly washed out.

ever since I bought Lite I don't wanna go back to original switch for handheld, even updated screen wouldn't change that. I love the weight of Lite, it allows to play longer in weird positions and never has issues with joycons that were annoying for the original switch.

I love watching Switch comparison videos while playing my PS3. I plan to buy a used Lite in a year, since I'm in college and I'll be out of the house more often. The OLED is interesting, and a few years from now I'll probably get one, but I do agree it probably should be the base model.

I’m partially sighted and I upgraded for the screen, and I’m going to find it much easier to use handheld. Didn’t use my Switch much handheld but I really want to, and now I will. The increased battery life is great too…and I’m selling my original Switch to my nephew. So he gets a Switch at a bargain price, and I’m getting a chunk of the money back i paid for the upgrade :) Agree on the black and white too, I went straight for the Neon.

My biggest problem is the idea of screen deterioration. OLED screens are a new technology and have a lot of flaws which cause poor lifespan; particularly for gaming, such as HUD elements causing burn-in.
@HouraisanKaguya3 жыл бұрын
@@Ozzymandius1 No, I do. They have a tendency to wear down over time. Pretty badly if you use them a lot. There's a large amount of time between the invention of a new technology and the common use of it. It is still new as far as I'm concerned.

I really want an OLED switch. I will be honest when I say that one of the big things that has kept me from playing a lot of handheld games is the battery life. 3-4 hours sounds relatively long, but it is just not cutting it. Plus the idea of having an eithernet port is great due to the fact that I have moved to a dorm a month ago, and connecting to online is a hassle if not down right impossible. I dislike how it is just out of stock at the moment. I will keep checking the gamestop, but I don't think I will have it until December at the absolute earliest.

I’m still stuck with my sucky launch day switch with poor battery life, and a scratched screen because of the dock. Yet I see absolutely no reason to upgrade to this version. Thank you Nintendo.

@kirin12303 жыл бұрын
Odd question, but can you replace V1 switch batteries with the newer versions? That could be a nice project that won't hurt the bank perhaps.
@OriginalBoondocksXVIII3 жыл бұрын
@@kirin1230 From all the quick research I just did, the original launch Switch, V2, and OLED either all have the exact same battery size or the OLED has 4310 mAh vs the prior two having 4210 mAh. In other words, the better battery life isn't because the newer consoles have a bigger or better battery, it's because the processor was swapped for a more efficient version in the V2 and OLED Switch units. A replacement battery in 2021 would obviously make a launch window Switch feel fresher again though.

I fully support the decision to upgrade the screen before even considering a performance upgrade. Nintendo places emphasis on style over power - their games should be vibrant and you should be able to play them anywhere. Granted, the Switch's performance is still in need of an upgrade (1080, 60fps) but the priority is for their style to be fully realized. An OLED screen and improved kickstand is more conducive to that than anything else. Plus, any performance upgrades going forward will be even more impactful.

There's one big pitfall if you already have a switch and you're planning on keeping both that one and the oled switch. You have to register one of them as a primary device. On your non-primary device, you have to be connected to the internet to play games downloaded from the eshop. Also, it won't let you play a game on your non-primary device if it's open on your primary device. Also no other users on the non-primary switch can play games you've downloaded.
