Nintendo Switch Vs Wii U Emulation | The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time... Which version is BETTER? Today I tested out Wii U and Nintendo Switch emulation to see which version of Ocarina of Time is better. The results were pretty shocking. Wii U emulation is TOO DARK but Switch Expansion Pack is missing some basic quality of life features.

Honestly, just emulate it. If you have the copy of the N64 game, then you're still supporting Nintendo while you can get better frame rate on your N64 games on PC. This is a better win-win situation than giving 50 dollars for... Nothing and presumably a leaked 90+ N64 game.

@@DrWillz1996 SNES and NES had bad input lag on NSO at launch but were fixed over time.

Unless Nintendo has better pricing for that overrated online expansion, then the Wii U is the best place for this game. Ocarina of Time was $49 when it released in the 90's...

Well on the WiiU you pay $10 ONCE and get to keep the game forever so that’s automatically better than having to pay $50 every single year. Plus it has the fog and other effects. Can always turn up the brightness on the pad or tv if it’s too dark for you

@@dantheman7316 has all the fog and water effects which the switch doesn’t. Brightness isn’t an issue because you can turn it up. Plus you pay $10 once and keep it forever instead of $50 a year every year.

@@kadshiri6513 it's not just turning brightness up, I made a preset on my tv just for WiiU VC games, they actually look quote good on WiiU when the tv is set up for them.

The input delay definitely bites you in the ass when playing minigames and boss fights where you have to play ping-pong with the energy attacks

Just noticing small but terrible texture issues on the switch. Like some walls that don't look like you can climb but you actually can (in other versions is very clear). Still going to play through but will definitely cancel my NSO afterward.

I'm generally not looking for top tier graphic quality when I'm playing an old game, rather I will hold out until there's more than a handful of games to make it worthwhile. Until then, most of the games are games I can play through remakes that have been released in recent enough years. (Really hoping games like Mystical Ninja get on it)

I was waiting until my controller arrived to dive into any of these, and that happened today. I played through the Deku Tree and first visit to the castle. There's a tiny bit of lag in OOT, but I don't think I would have noticed had I not been looking for it. It was a non-factor during combat. The fog thing is... odd. It used to be clear in your immediate vicinity and then get really foggy to hide the fact that the N64 couldn't make things look good far away. Now there's just kind of a uniform haze over everything in the forest. It's not game breaking, but I hope they patch it. Just because the Switch CAN render far away things, doesn't mean it's a great idea. It looked better when you could just see looming shapes mostly lost in the haze. One annoying thing: I haven't found a way for the N64 controller to shut down software, so you either leave it suspended when you put the system to sleep or turn off the controller, start up a different controller, and then quit. Positives: the controller feels great, and the rumble is surprisingly strong. They definitely nailed that. The games are basically just cleaned up ports rather than remakes, so they'll pretty much look like you remember them looking except a little cleaner. I agree with the pinned comment. I'm going to enjoy this stroll down memory lane, but I hope they fix it. It was pricey enough that there's no excuse to not be good.

i dont know why they didnt port the 3ds version instead. I mean, i've been playing that one in the Citra (on a 4k 56 curved monitor, with vulkan on the graphic) and its beaaautiful how they did remake the game (yeah some scenarios are quite pixelated/blurred, but thats bc they were meant for the 3ds screen, which sux). But still, i played the 98 version on 64 (in 98), and now the 3ds one, and it was beautiful to see it like that. Same goes for the Majora's Mask

Appearance-wise, the Switch version doesn't look bad, especially on a new OLED Switch where the colors really pop. What does kill me is that input lag, absolutely brutal compared to other emulated versions of Ocarina. And sure, it'll never be as perfect as analog inputs on an OG N64, but it needs to be better than this.

I'm testing the lag now with a WiiU in Wii mode compared to switch and there's literally no difference.

@@Awnos Have you tried a stand-alone Wii? I know the Wii U native versions had notoriously bad lag as well, though I’m not sure if that extends to Wii mode within the Wii U.

Ocarina and majoras are one of those games i never owned on My N64 (i rented them) but i have them both on My wii and they look pretty good with component cables , so i dont care for the switch one tbh

This is such a disappointment. I've been emulating n64 games on my phones and windows devices for almost a decade and they play and look better than this. No issues mapping buttons to a Bluetooth controller either. It's their own IP, I don't understand why they struggle so much emulating their own games.

I'm not going to lie, this emulation on Switch is quite disappointing, especially for the price. Good heavens, it's so expensive. This is a definite pass for me. I know a lot of people aren't a fan of this, but I think I'm just going to stick to emulating these games on my PC and my laptop. I played through Super Mario 64 and Yoshi's Story on my MacBook the other day and the experience was darn near flawless. I got Dolphin up and running on my laptop today as well and I was running Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door at 4K 60 fps with anti-aliasing. Nintendo would be wise to learn from these emulators rather than spending their time and money trying to shut them down.

We, devs, are looking deep to why this emulator is doing weird things to games and to our surprise, Nintendo is trying to lower/change some effects and tricks-hacks to give the best performance out of it. There are lots of configs and lua scripts to tinker with so its possible that people at Nintendo can fix all of this initial mess.

You can change controls you silly goose, within the switch settings

With the pro controller's settings yeah. But instead of mapping buttons to the N64 controller, you're mapping to their forced layout which is an overly roundabout way of doing it and a huge pain
