This week I built a really simple diy eurorack project, the switched multiple. Simply, a signal can be routed to one of two destinations or neither via a toggle switch. It can also be used in reverse to send one of two inputs to a single output. It's a very simple project to build, requiring only a switch and a few jacks and some wire, with no circuit board needed.
I got the idea from watching Mylar Melodies' video, THE MODULAR MAGIC OF SWITCHED MULTIPLES:
• THE MODULAR SYNTH MAGI...
This is a 100% passive design, and active/buffered multiples may perform better with CV signals sent to multiple destinations.

really great in depth and how to actually build something. most DIY videos doesn’t show a shit. so this is really really helpful for idiots where only half of the brain is functioning, OR who can’t read schematics but still have a soldering iron available. absolutely perfect step by step videos ... much appreciated. Thanks

Nice little quality of life module! If your vise is long enough to accommodate 3U, try cutting your panel big next time and adding a vertical 90° bend on one or both sides for some extra rigidity. If you can get yourself square and practiced at knocking the bend in, it can even look cleaner than tinsnips up the sides.

I've just made my own switched mult. thanks so much for such a clear and detailed video. It's really helpful for beginners. Happy music making!

Just built it, thanks for the detailed how-to! I'll probably try and play around with the layout a bit since I find it a bit fiddly to reach the switches when everything's plugged in :D

Thank you, I never thought to screw the panel down by the two outer rail holes. Great tip!

Yooooo I never realized how easy it was to cut an aluminum sheet like that! Might have to get some now cause buying black panels is cheap enough but gets spendy quick I've messed up a few blacks before. Been using just pcb taped to my rails that or cardboard. Wonder if guitar pick guard would work

Great video! What kind of metal did you use for cutting the front plates?

I use 1/32" aluminum because I have a bunch of it, which is easy enough to cut but a little flimsy for a module this narrow. I'd suggest going with 1/16" or about 2mm sheet aluminum - any sheet metal place should stock it, and you can have them cut it into a couple of 129mm wide pieces so that you can make modules from them.

Hi Extralife! I love your videos... ive got a question for you: How thick is the sheet of aluminium that you use for your diy proyects like these? Cheers
@extralifedisco
@extralifedisco 4 жыл бұрын
It's real thin stuff! 1/32" or so I think. Thicker would be better especially for such a thin module. It holds the parts fine but does flex a bit when inserting or removing patch cables. Another commenter suggested adding an L-bend to one side of the panel, which would stiffen it quite a bit, will have to try that. Otherwise I'd suggest getting 1/16" stock, which should still be possible to cut with tin snips.

Thanks... Is the panel not too thin? It looks like 1 mm. I made a 1 mm aluminium panel and it is too flexible.

How much can signsl be multiplied? Can i connect the same signal(for example a gate) from the switch spdtn to three outputs?... Could it get weakee as it get multiplied?
@extralifedisco
@extralifedisco 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can double up gate signals just fine, just like any other passive mult. Pitch/CV signals do tend to get weakened a bit when multed to different places - while that's probably fine for LFOs and envelopes, with pitch it makes stuff go out of tune so you're better off using a buffered multiple.

isnt this just a switch? wheres the mult part?

I don't get it. I built this exactly how you did it but the signal goes through both outputs no matter what side I flip the switch to. Doesn't make any sense to me. EDIT: I switched the ground and the signal wires (misinterpreted my sockets) so of course it doesn't work. Better get my iron back out.

@@extralifedisco I resoldered everything and now it works great. Made a passive mult and a dual switch on 4HP. Pretty rad. Thanks for posting this video, I saw it months ago and I just now gave it a try... glad I did.
