Dear Switchfoot, My name is Jonathan Shafe and I am fifteen years old. I discovered your music just recently and fell in love with it. For the first time I heard interesting original melodies and honest lyrics from a Christian perspective--something I had been searching for, for a long time. For awhile now I have been interested in the music industry but have been unable to find any helpful information concerning it. My parents are missionaries in West Africa and I can appreciate so much what you sing about, from my own experiences and life. Music has an effect on people in way that I will never be able to completely understand. I know this is a lot to ask, but could you answer the following questions? 1. How long has your occupation been that of a musical artist? 2. What other occupations have you worked in previously? 3.Do you primarily work with people, things, or ideas? 4. What do you like most about your job? 5. How did you get started as a musical artist? 6. What personal qualities do you feel are needed to succeed as an artist? 7. What type of training is needed for this occupation today? 8. What changes in your job (music-industry-wise) have you seen occur? 9. What are the most frequently recurring problems on your job? 10. Do you have any long-term career goals? 11. Does your job require primarily independent activity or is there a lot of teamwork? 12. Who evaluates your performance and how does that actually take place? 13. Can experience be substituted for formal education credentials? 14. What would you say are the rewards of your position? 15. What hours do you usually work as an artist? Do you find you have free time or is there always a deadline and no flexibility? 16. What types of opportunities for growth and advancement are there as an artist? 17. What would you say is your least favorite thing about being a musical artist? 18. What advise would you give to a person who feels like a career as an artist is what God made them to do, but doesn't know how they should pursue it? I appreciate you taking the time to answer this questions very much and just know that it means a lot to me. Keep seeking God and don't ever give up! Know that it's worth the pain and the struggle you touch more lives than you could ever imagine. Sincerely, Jonathan

I know you were looking for Switchfoot, but with my own experience looking for the same answers I've found that 2 most musicians have a decent job before their music finally takes off, don't force music, but don't give up on it. 3 Switchfoot works with many things Hello Hurricane was primarily based on Hurricane Katrina (?) then they got songs like 'The Sound' which was based of John Perkins and then they have songs on their own personal experiences like 'World you Want' 5 Most bands just simply start as that, they played until someone listened, even if it was for free they only played in a band because it was what they loved.

The world begins With new born skin We are right now You're needle girl In a haystack world We are right now You're breathing in The highs and lows We call it living In this needle and haystack life I found miracles there in your eyes It's no accident we're here tonight We are once in a lifetime Don't let go Don't give up hope All is forgiven You're breathing in You're breathing in We call it living In this needle and haystack life I found miracles there in your eyes It's no accident we're here tonight We are once in a lifetime All is not lost All is not lost Become who you are It happens once in a lifetime In this needle and haystack life I found miracles there in your eyes It's no accident we're here tonight We are once in a lifetime alive We are once in a lifetime In this needle and haystack (We are once in a lifetime)

This was my favorite album going through high school, with vice versus being a close second. As I sit here and sing this song gazing into the face of our 1 week old daughter, it all takes on a whole new meaning to me. It’s sad we can’t get any honest and heartfelt writing out of the band anymore, but thank you for this album.

Pray this prayer for me; “Lord Jesus Christ, I just want to say thank you for Genius Zeal. Lord Jesus Christ, I just want you to make sure that you help him through his college, general Ed, and the university he wants to graduate from. Help him with his finances, his windshield on his car, and help him with his problems he is having, and help him with not getting rejected by others. Help him have talent for you, Jesus. Lord Jesus, don’t let others play mind games with him at all, and tell others to stop harassing him. Give this man a wife and a family. Help him with getting a mansion he can live in for Jesus Christ. Make Genius Zeal prove others wrong, because others believe that Genius Zeal will not make it, and we all need you to turn that around. Thank you, lord. In Jesus Christ name I pray. Amen.”

It's dreadful. This is advertising-level generic, it in no way stands out from the crowd - I shouldn't have to analyse the fucking lyrics with any kind of effort in order to enjoy a song or differentiate it from any of the other 'Uplifticrap' songs that dominate the radio and TV at the moment.

***** I am not demanding anything. I'm giving critical analysis of why this song exemplifies the total nose dive the music industry has been experiencing lately with total rubbish such as this song, nearly impossible to differentiate from the next one in it's genre, becoming somehow popular.

***** "'I'll agree with you that this particular song on the album isn't exactly blazing trails of innovation but that is not the fault of the band." Stopped reading there. It is 100% their fault because they produced the fucking music.
