Switching My Specialty?

It's taken a while to realize Radiology may not be the field for me...I wanted to do an entire video devoted to me changing my specialty...This decision didn't come easy, but it is time to make my decision public. So what is my next specialty?? OB/GYN? Anesthesia? Surgery? Urology? Family Medicine? Internal Medicine? You'll have to watch and see....

I’m 14, I’ve been watching your videos currently I’m highly convinced to specialize in radiology. I’m okay with learning for the rest of my life, I like to help people aswell, and I really like science. It seems like a cool field to specialize in.

My aunt is a radiologist and she loves it. She did her fellowship in Breast imaging. The cool thing about radiology is you see different things every day. The drawbacks would probably be little patient interaction but overall it’s a very cool specialty!

In high school and as a pre med I also wanted to do anesthesia! Ultimately found IR in med school and fell in love. If not IR I think I would have done ENT, because the head and neck anatomy is awesome. I remember during a neck dissection in med school, it looked exactly like a Netter picture which I though was so cool.

You’re so unlike the radiologists that I worked with when I was an RT in the days of CT scanners in semi tractor rigs.....I hated calling them in at 0200 to read negative elbow X-rays. You’re warm, friendly, and exude competence. You make a very technical specialty more human. Mr. Roentgen would be proud.

In nursing school, I wanted to do Mother Baby so bad. I did my preceptorship right before graduation on that floor of the hospital. I spent most of the time with my nurse in the nursery, which meant I went into every C-section and several births. My last week, I was in on a C-section and low and behold, I discharged Mom and Baby a few days later when I was back out on the floor. I walked into the room at one point, and Mom threw the baby at me and took a picture of "the future nurse" and their baby. It was awesome! Never will forget it!

MS2 here! I could definitely see you doing Urology. My top three things a specialty has to have are; patient outcomes/population, good mix of procedures and clinic, and the ability to still spend time with my family. I'm leaning towards IR, Derm, Pathology or OB/Gyn.

Nursing student here. Tracheal secretions gross me out too. I seriously can't handle it. I recently had a patient with a trach. He coughed and a big hunk of phlegm flew out through the trach. I started gagging and darn near threw up right there in the patient's room.

I switched from trauma surgery to Radiology. For me it was the best decision. And it was an honor to be able to experience surgery for 5 years.

Quick question. Trying to decide between Rads and Uro. Although the residency of Uro may be slightly harder than IR (or at least for sure DR), would you say that Uro attending lifestyle is better than IR? I love short procedures too--it's just the brutal IR hours that scare me.

I've been a registered nurse since '99. I feel the same way. I'm so glad I discovered Radiology in 2012, worked in NICU before then. I will never leave radiology either. I work beside the best pediatric anesthesiologists. I like the fast patient turn around procedures.

I did until I did a cardiology rotation. I was kind of bummed out because cardiologist would just constantly stress healthy lifestyles and taking meds and patients would never listen. I was frustrating for me.

Interestingly, I've been battling with this thought for a few months now. I'm a Radiology resident and I'm seriously considering changing specialties. I thought I could hang in there, complete the residency then move on to another specialty. I kinda ended up in Radiology through exclusion...didn't like XYZ, (read Anesthesiology and ENT plus I wanted a laid back life, lol)....so I chose Radiology and actually had such great expectations of it when I started out. However, the institution where I'm training at and the program itself, are below par. I had even set my sights on IR, but I'm not enjoying this experience very much, to the point where I'm ready to cut my losses and start the same program elsewhere or just change specialties altogether. Perhaps, if the quality of training was better I would feel differently...But as it stands, I am really in a dilemma....Any advice for me?

Do not be afraid to make changes. Even if it is a lot now u will be so much happier down the road. A lot of people do their intern year and residency at different places. Same goes for fellowship. Not sure how that process would work

I love anesthesia and cardiology. I honestly cant decide 😵. Anesthesia can be boring at times and it s a huge responsibility. Cardio is super competitive and you have to publish papers like every month (lol dont get me wrong i like research work but that shit is extreme in cardiology together with all that new technology and info that you need to keep up with). On the other hand anesthesia is stressful. You argue with surgeons and if you cancel off an elective procedure cuz of some reason (for example extreme hypertension), surgeon is mad, hospital manager thinks they lost their money etc.

Lol, urology brings back memories. I worked for a medical answering service in the early 90s. Every. Single. Man. who called the after hours line was having a meltdown. O MY GODDDDDD I CANNNNN'T PEEEEEE!!!! I NEED THE DOCTOR TO CALL ME IMMEDIATELY!!! I'M IN GUT WRENCHING PAIN!!! I CAN'T PEE!!!! HURRY UP MY BLAAAAAADER COULD EXPLODE!!!
