Switching Vs Linear Power Supply - LIVE Testing + EFHW Giveaway. FT8 and CHILL

Here's the thing,
A Few months ago I posed a community question on linear vs switching. Considering all feedback (Which we'll read on stream), I realized it would be fun to compare:

Multiple Linear and Switching Power Supplies (cheap and less cheap)
We will use my Flex 6400 to look at the spectrum.

You can transmit for an increased load. Probably drawing less than 2 amps at receive. 50 watts out will be about 10-15 amps. depending on the PS, you might see much more noise at higher current draws. Lots of these tests are on KZbin. Most all use DC load equipment during tests. You don't have a DC load so transmitting will do the same job.

Thanks for the info.. I will re evaluate this stream with the information you provided. Right now, I am looking at some sort of DC Electronic Load like the MULTICOMP PRO MP710258 US. May be a few months until I can get it. But this helps out a lot and will be fun to re evaluate!

Great show. with switching power supplies use ferrite like you did. I use FT 240-31 and 10 AWG wire close to supply and a outher FT 240-31 on the AC cord close to supply. The AC cord is a source of RFI as well. My answer to question of switching or linear is LiFePO4 ! NO noise and works when power goes out. With solar MPPT do same thing. ferrite on both solar and battery side close to MPPT. type 31 ferrite works best on RFI . For solar home install. use ferrite beads right on panels like 2 per panel 1 on + and 1 on - . may take a bunch. do the MPPT. and both sides of inverter with ferrite. both AC and DC . 73

This was really cool. I wonder how my Samlex SEC-1325M would compare? I'm told that Samlex makes really quiet switching power supplies, but since the Yaesu FP-1030A linear is not much more expensive, maybe I should go with the Yaesu linear? I have so much noise sources around me to ferret out, my power supply might be the least of my worries at the moment.

Why not compare to battery power!! I have a noise issues in my urban environment. Switching battery, linear or switch mode makes no difference. All the noise is bought in through the antenna. Do the same comparison with no antenna connected, then all noise is from the PSU. Just a thought.

Re read what you said, I got it. Makes sense. I will test this when I re evaluate and re do the livestream again.
