☞ 👀 #RVLife really has some bigger challenges at times. Today we lost a tire at 65 mph but were very lucky with how it turned out. The goal is to stay calm as you try to decide the best plan of action. Remember to check the tires' lugnuts and torque them to specifications.

I (Dave) am an expert with regards to calibrating torque wrenches (38 years calibration technician at a nuke plant). Always - always - always set a clicker torque wrench to its minimum setting when not in use. Really glad that you recognized the need to check and probably replace all lug bolts. OBTW, you are probably lucky that another one (or more) didn't fail with the physical shock when the first one cut loose. Our hearts went out for both of you. Thanks for sharing and hope you are having better days. Safe travels!

I’ve been in your shoes big time. My husband became critically I’ll while on the road. We got him to a 21 bed hospital in the middle of no where, then he was transferred by ambulance to a large town. He eventually had to be flown home while I was left in a small town to worry about our trailer and truck, while feeling horrible that I wasn’t with my guy. I didn’t know how to drive the RV and we had to be out of the RV park the next day. Insert major wife breakdown here. Thousands of dollars later the RV and truck were shipped home, and I then flew home on a last minute flight. Our RV is now sold.

TIP: If you have to, you can remove one bolt from each of your other tires & use those as replacements. One bolt missing from each & driving cautiously is quite safe, assuimng the bolts havent been weakened by over torquing.

Bearing nut tight to bind wheel ...back nut slowly until wheel turns then safety lock it. When torquing go slow steady pressure until click or peep. Other already installed wheels, back off one nut to loosen passed torque value, then torque to spec value. Cross star pattern to even the stress on each lug. Find all instructions on KZbin. You did good but, keep thinking and learning before something else comes up.

Once they are over torqued, stress fracture occurs, and advice is to replace all lug bolts is safest. You may be fine just losing them and placing them at correct torque, but you are carrying a lot of weight over rough roads

Emotionally it is EXHAUSTING and I can't imagine how it feels when the RV is you home on wheels since we part-time. So happy you were able to get this fixed and back on the road. I wonder if you could have used a ratchet strap to provide some support for your axle - at least raise it up a bit as you limp off the road. I pray your future travels are uneventful!

I am so happy no one was hurt. Sheila, everyone hits a limit at some point. You had so many delays and I know that Huddle was on your mind. That is when it is good to have a partner who isn't at that point. Todd was calm and understanding. He knew what needed to be done and took care of it. Such a good example of a marriage rooted in God. Todd, it is good to see that you are so handy and knowledgeable about the maintenance and willing to accept when you made a mistake. Boy, the Dakotas are so big and sparsely populated, it was good that this happened where you could quickly (relatively) get to the store. The people there are so helpful though. We had a truck battery die at a gas station on the way to the Badlands. On a Sunday, in a very small town with a closed NAPA store. But the owners were at the diner next door and opened the store, drove Rob (who walked about 1/2 mile) back to the truck to find out what type of battery, back the store to purchase, then back to the truck to put it in. God is good all the time.

Wow I'm a DIY guy myself but your positive attitude is much greater than how I would have handled things. You're lucky the tire didn't do any body damage. I don't have an impact gun nearly that strong and I always just tighten my lugs by hand but a torque wrench is now something that I need to buy. As my Mother use to say "the glass is always half full".

The exact same thing happened to us in our 36ft 5th wheel about 2 years ago. Apparently the person we purchased the rig from had been using an impact wrench removing and reinstalling wheels. We lost 2 wheels at one time. My beautiful wife still has ptsd from the incident. But us to where blessed on timing and the area we where in. No one got hurt and I should of checked the lugs after the purchase. I replaced all the hubs due to paranoia when we got the rig home. Nice job! Glad you shared this. You probably saved a life or prevented a very bad situation by sharing. All the best!!!

First off kudos for your can do attitude. Several people have commented about the torque on the lug nuts. Replacing the studs is a very good idea not knowing if they are stress cracked. My first trial was putting timing gears and chain in my GMC pickup on the side of the freeway after pushing my truck with camper and a dune buggy on a trailer about an 1/8 mile to get off the freeway by sitting on the bumper with my teenage son and pushing while my wife steered the truck. Did i mention it was at night??? With the help of a CHP officer i was able to get the parts needed and make it back home after working on it most of the night. Big fun but a great learning experience. Safe travels, you did a great job.
@billhillegass946
@billhillegass946 Жыл бұрын
So glad you were able to repair the studs and nuts, I know it’s old school but a four way lug wrench is the best way to snug the wheel to the drum , then torque with a torque wrench. It does take longer but you will feel better knowing you have not over tightened . We all learn every day . Sometimes your the bug , sometimes the windshield.
@williamgreen4757
@williamgreen4757 Жыл бұрын
Sheered lugnut bolts can be punched out after they are sheered. Remove the brake drum and drive them through. you can buy tire studs. So over or under torquing can leed to tire stud sheer. Replace all the tire studs, if you loose one wheel then replace all the wheel studs on the trailer. Harbor Freight has inexpensive torque wrenches that will do.

Glad you are OK!!! I feel your pain, made the same mistake! One week ago, experienced losing BOTH wheels on the drivers side of my recently purchased 5th wheel (tandem axles), 15 miles east of Cedar Rapids IA. I had traveled to MI to pickup my "new to me" 5th wheel - was so excited and busy with so many other items on the journey back home; had topped off tire pressure, but forgot to check the torque. Very thankful I was able to remain in control of the truck and trailer, pulled over a good 6-8 ft off freeway (trailer riding on the two hubs) into the grass next to the corn field and began trying to calm down; a good Samaritan helped me recover one wheel from the median; AAA was worthless and would not even provide me any guidance or suggestions except "We don't do RVs". So I called a local towing service and they recommended me to Papa's truck recovery and towing (for commercial trucks); they sent a technician who came out, removed one hub, took it to town, got parts, came back, hammered out old sheared off bolts from both hubs, hammered in the new bolts, cleaned and re-packed outer bearings, reinstalled both hubs, then reinstalled my recovered wheel and the spare, all while on the side of the freeway. He noted that my other wheel was likely a ways back down the freeway and the rim would be unusable - the sheared off bolts were coasted in aluminum, indicating they had worn through the pressed in bushings in the aluminum rim. 4 hours and ~ $500 to get back on the road... lesson learned... always check torque! (never had this issue in 20+ years on my old bumper pull with steel wheels). Have since upgraded my 15" wheels/tires to 16" Goodyear Endurance with better rims, 2" lift blocks for suspension, and CRE3000 equalizers to level out the trailer for better ride and handling (trailer had been 4" low in back - which shifts more weight onto rear axle/tires). VERY thankful no serious damage other than losing one wheel/tire and some bent sheet metal trim.

Yes!! Thank God this happened where it did. Todd impressed me that he knew how to tap out the lug nuts and do this repair. It only put you back 2 days and not 4 or 5. God be with you for more safe travels and His protection over you both. Hope Sheila's stress headache goes away. Hugs, thoughts, and prayers sweet people.

You are not alone, same thing happened to us, we have Nev-R-Lube hubs which are difficult to source. we kept our wits, recovered our tire, thankfully no one was hit by it, were lucky to park overnite at an American Legion. I did have a spare hub, at home 200 miles away. We drove home picked up tools and the spare hub, and turned around back to the RV. We were able to repair the next morning. Kudo to you for hanging in there and truly count your blessings,

Great vid showing the emotions and what went wrong. We carry a torque wrench, but I don’t carry two back up leaf springs like Todd did. We all learn fr each other. One suggestion is to carry safety yellow/orange vests under your seats. If emergency first thing to do is put on the vest if walking around rig ok street or highway. 👍

First off no one was hurt. Thats the important part. God Bless everyone involved. We had a tire come across the hiway and hit my friends C4 corvette door and it basically destroyed the door on his vette and total it. Lots of stored energy in that tire and rim. I would say the lugs were over torqued. Just went a bit too far with the impact wrench. Be sure to replace all the lugs on all the tires. You cannot be sure you didn't over tighten all of them. Again no one was hurt and parts can be replaced. Talk it over with Todd about buying a spare hub and brake assembly. Great job of getting off the highway. Always be safe. Prayers for continued good journeys and joys you two. This too shall pass.

Todd was the man with the plan. This is a month or two old from the looks of it, but Todd if you search on Eric O's page South main auto he has videos for changing the entire hub out instead of doing brakes, I often did the entire hub as it would be as cheap as brakes sometimes. Then you do not need to worry about if you stretched a lug bolt. Glad the wheel did not cross into on coming traffic. Stay safe and healthy.

Lug studs are readily available at any parts store...a hammer and a pin punch can knock those broken studs out, and install new ones...while you're at the parts store, spend 80 bucks and get a torque wrench.

I just learned a very valuable thing from you, Not to tighten lugs nut too tight. When I just bought a rockwood 24 camper last yr, I tried to check to see if I could take the lugs off. I could not. I had to use my 2 foot snap on lever ( with an added pipe) and with all the strength I had, I finally loosened them. I now know, If I had left them like that, I could have had your problem. Oh my God. Switch it Up has meant a lot to me today. It made me thankful that I didnt have a problem. with my too tight lugs. Thanks a Bumch, Charley Kilmer Ocala. I would like to meet you both some day. You are a Public Service. !!!!!

Take your drum after you tighten the nuts to install the lugs and set it on the inside of your rim that is laying on the ground and hit it with your extension and hammer to make sure it is totally seated. My impact gun the same as yours when I put the lug nuts on and test it. It's torquing them to 125 lbs.

As we begin our RV life, I can’t thank you enough for sharing this episode and the cause of your wheel failure. It’s such a valuable lesson. Todd, your optimism holds everything together in the most remarkable way! Extra lug nuts go on the gear list; check.

This video resonated with me so much! I DIY my maintenance as well and feel fairly confident with it but each hiccup you ran in to sounded soooo much like something that would happen to me. I go through the same 'learning' experiences you did through this whole event (but once I suffer the first one, I'm good going forward). I often am sharing with folks about how I know what I know is because I've screwed up and fixed it or learned the hard way. I am so very sorry it happened but thank you soooo much for posting it! I am adjusting some things I do from what I've learned in your posting. I very much recognized the many 'positives' that you pointed out as well and I think that trait about you is so important in the full time (or part time) RV world and with all of us DIYr's. I have not had this happen to me yet but it sounded so familiar (the experience) between the stress headache with the Mrs's and your speed bumps you encountered and you handled it wonderfully. Thanks for letting the rest of us out here know that we are not alone with our events such as these! Very best regards and safe travels!

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. We had a blowout once, changed the tire, but had to go home because the tire went up into the kitchen cabinet, ripped out the water pump and did a bunch of other damage. Then on the way home we shortly had another blowout (the first one obviously damaged the other tire.) No tow available. Had to leave the camper on the side of the interstate overnight. I was very glad to get home after that one. And lessons were learned. And we were very lucky too, in many ways, Glad you guys made it through. Sheila, I hope you are feeling better. It takes a while to get over something like that. But just getting through it makes you stronger!
