It's all good Mark. I don't like ff8, but it's also 1 of like... 4 final fantasy games I've actually finished, and I've finished it multiple times... so what I'm saying is it can't be a bad game at all if I've finished it at least 3 times 😂

Final Fantasy VIII is my second favorite after FFX. The soundtrack is amazing, and the game is hilarious as well. I love that we can see Squall's funny inner thoughts.

The only thing I don't love about FF8 is the whole "We made enemies level up together with you, so the meta strategy is to not level up at all until you unlock all the +stat on level up abilities" thing. That just feels very counterintuitive, aside from that the game has some of my favorite Final Fantasy music of all time. I actually like FF9 a bit more simply because it isn't set up in such a way that grinding early can end up shooting you in the foot, but I'm a sucker for the "contemporary sci-fi" feel of FF8.

Rereleasing blue dragon, lost odyssey and last story would be absolutely awesome. (Yes I know the Xbox 360 versions of blue dragon and lost oddyssey are on the Xbox series still. I’m saying a full rerelease for PlayStation and switch as well. I tried to play fantasian on mobile years ago but I had an old iPhone that struggled to run it and even with a newer one it drained the heck out of the battery lol. I’m just only big on playing RPGs like this on my phone to be honest. To see it come to consoles with added voice acting and ff music is awesome. I’ve played the demo and have the game ordered and coming I think Thursday….. I have to check the status lol but I can’t wait to play the full game. I do agree about the controls they do through me off a bit when changing angles but it’s a minor thing. The “dimengeon” (I think that’s how it’s spelled) is a brilliant little idea though. That doesn’t take away from those that want to fight the constant random battles while accommodating those that don’t want to do a random battle every 2 seconds or maybe just want to make things a bit more challenging fighting a gauntlet. On one hand Sakaguchi has done so much for the industry with his work on not just ff years past but the rpg genre in general that I would completely understand if he decided to retire but I’m also happy he plans to do at least one more game. Yes this game at its core is old school turn based jrpg and nothing here breaks gaming conventions but sometimes a well done game that gives that nostalgic feeling while having modern tweaks is a great change of pace for those that grew up with ff and similar games back then. Also special mention to the diagram as still crazy to think that the team created diaramas for each environment by hand (or whatever tools were used) and digitized them to the game world. I’m no expert at that those but I’m sure that took a lot of time and planning during the initial development of the game for phones. I honestly don’t know of any other game like this has done that (If someon does know of another please let me know I’m always interested in looking up things like that)

I gotta say, I’m so glad to hear more people profess their love for FF8 as time has gone on. I remember feeling like the only kid in my school who liked that game, everyone always argued that either 6 or 7 or 10 was the best.

FF8 seems to have a new appreciation in recent years. The voice actor from FFXVI, Ben Starr said it was his too, and proudly wore a FF8 shirt at last year’s game awards. This game has been on my list for a while as FF6 is my favourite FF, and Sakaguchi has said in an interview that when he replayed it with his friends, he remembered how much he enjoyed making it, and it inspired him to make Fantasian, and try to recapture that same magic. Your review was reassuring that he succeeded - cheers! It’s a tough release date for Fantasian, though. We’ve had a year full of very good JRPGs and we’ve had Visions of Mana, Metaphore Refantazio, Romancing Saga 2, YS X and Dragon Quest 3 all release within the space of a few months. I’ve bought most of those and so I’ll have to wait a bit before getting Fantasian.

⁠​⁠​⁠@@MrStimpson38 maybe! lol! I really liked Visions, so I don’t regret it. The world was beautiful to explore and the combat was a lot of fun with the customization. Story was just ok, but a bit too simple. I had to get it really due to nostalgia for the series, as Secret of Mana introduced to me to JRPGs when I was much younger. I was saving for this this but then the Demo of Metaphore: Refantazio hit me, and I just had to buy it. It’s quickly become my game of the year, above Wukong and FF7 Rebirth. I’ll get Fantasian for Xmas or in the new year when it’s on sale, and I’m really looking forward to it. It seems to tick all the JRPG points I like.

Some of those outdoor environments have an almost pre-rendered look to them...Which I LOVE! There's still something to be said for that fixed (ish) camera style, I bet if Kubrick had made a game he'd INSIST on it (!)

I played this on apple arcade and was so surprised at how much I loved it. Apparently this version they toned down the difficulty a bit which is a good thing, some of those last battles were brutal. I would actually replay this again on switch to get that voice acting and battle music randomization which is awesome. Thank you so much for the review as always!

The miniature thing was THE big selling point of the game when it came out. Not the gameplay or music, but just the backgrounds. And I agree they are what makes the game stand apart from other JRPG's

For me Fantasian Neo Dimension gotta be the most expected and biggest RPGs of the year because it's almost like Final Fantasy, Square Enix relase it, but Mistwalker developed it what's always nice to hear about new game studios, this game looks beautiful I like the World and characters defienitily the peotagonist Leo because i'm Leo too and I believe this will works perfectly on Switch that my score might be even 8/10 great game I need to buy and play Fantasian Neo, no Fantasian Leo Dimension this is like an early Christmas gift from Square Enix, Mistwalker and Nintendo thank you so much and Happy Christmas Holidays everyone! 😊❤

I love the backgrounds and the details they’ve put into the game, so yes I’d love to play it. More so after Mark has mentioned about the music selection. The only thing that makes me hesitate is its difficulty level - anyway I’m definitely going to give it a try.

The orientation recentering is so funny to me cuz that was literally an issue on the early analog stick pre-rendered background RPGs to which this game is clearly a hat tip, so it’s not like this was a surprise!

I loved this on the Apple store, and got up to the final act where upgrades were really game breaking. Couldn't finish it though because it overheated my old iPhone, so i'm getting this for christmas (hopefully). Definitely looking forward to playing this on stronger hardware.

Loved the video. Just wanna note though that the game is on multiplatform release. I have the PS5 copy, for example. This might be the reason why they opted not to do touchscreen controls, so they can simplify the process of porting the game to all available consoles. Excited to play it myself, and glad to find another FF8 fan!

I absolutely loved FFVIII and while not my fave of the psone games it was still amazing, i loved how much you could mess around with junctions and the locations were really nice. am definitely interested in this one, love how the areas channel the energy of the old FF pre-rendered backdrops (though without the clash of high-res sprites on psone-res backdrops the modern versions of those have) though the one thing which does seem like a concern is the camera constantly moving, feels like it would have been nice to have some options regarding that including maybe even letting the player use tank controls (like how the old survival horror games handled that kind of thing) either way its really nice to have this game on console now and open to a wider audience.

Final Fantasy VIII is peak honestly. I always preferred it to VII. The junction system was ahead of it's time, Triple Triad was great especially with each region having it's own rules, the story had great moments and fun bosses, also the attack timing to increase damage. I could go on all day

Pleasantly surprised by the quality of the Switch version. Was all in for PS5 for the 4K presentation of those gorgeous dioramas, but this would be great on handheld. I’m super in the mood for the game too. I’ve recently just finished FF16 (loved it) and all I want is to play more Final Fantasy. And well, this is a new one in all but name.

Honestly generic is fine. Its safe. And very hard to cock up. Especially when you build up an all star team like this. They can simply not worry about doing anything risky. But simply do the best hits of what they've achieved through their whole careers. Its a win in this nostalgia ridden era of gaming. If its good throughout. You have a new classic.
