Why grow in line instead of side by side? Conserves water/ drying.

Pour tap water into 1 Gallon containers [1 for each Bale] and leave sit for a day. It will reach Ambient temp and thus be warmer than 'fresh' tap water when applied to the Bales. This should aide the conditioning process.

yes... good to bring the water up to air temp... after this first day I just filled pails of water and left them by the bales... thanks for the comment!!

I bought the bale buster from the straw bale gardening site and mine doesn't look like yours. Mine is white beads with some dark ones too. What is the difference

It is the organic fertilizer… it derives it’s nitrogen source from an organic source

You can run your 2x4 through the tomatoe cages and not have to have a post by each one.

I’ve recently bought a small farm in Idaho. The soil here is horrible so this is going to work perfectly! Thanks for sharing!!

great... you can get two years out of a bale. then the bale can be added to your compost bin/pile to make a great organic soil additive! Happy gardening!!

with bale temps between 80-100, is it safe to plant potatoes then? Or when can you plant them?
@WorkshopatTheGardens
@WorkshopatTheGardens 3 жыл бұрын
for new bales you want to wait till the bales drop to air temps... often five weeks after starting the conditioning process. Potatoes work best in second year bales... you can plant them early at the bottom of the bale... check out Joel's video about planting potatoes here kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2fdpXtpn8uWmbM

The item you use to install the posts is called what and where can I get one?
@WorkshopatTheGardens

The posts are referred to as T-Posts and the item I used to install them is called a Post Pounder... I know, pretty original. Any farm or garden store should have them... like a Fleet Farm, Tractor Supply or Menards.. Those are the stores in our area of Minnesota. Cheers!

Ive seen a video with round bales gardening and they used a layer of dirt on top. Do you think you could modify this method and begin conditioning after the dirt is placed on top so that the soil bacteria and nutrients penetrate further down the straw and accelerate the process? I would try that and compare the results, but the round bales I got were already conditioned, thus, free except for shipping.

What you do about ants in your garden is start an ant war and let them kill each other off without chemicals etc. Find a pile of ants in another location. Pick up a shovel full of ants and add them on top of your problem pile. They will have a turf war.

Try some wood ash or calcium around the bales. Just make sure its put out.

@@WorkshopatTheGardens Sodium-based soap and detergent have no place in the garden. Use a potassium-based soap like Oasis or Dr. Bronner's.
