I hate when I start counting, because I FEEL the music, but when someone says one thing is a 6-count, and another is an 8-count, I don't get it. Throw in swivels, and I see absolutely zero numbers 😢

In which video did you show the vintage footage where they had 6 or so couples do a swing out on different beats?

I kept finding myself a beat behind so I watched this in slow motion. Once you get going, are you starting to swivel on the 8? Like your foot is getting turned out to start the swivel on the 8? I just want to make sure I'm understanding correctly - I struggle with swing outs. Thanks!
@LauraGlaess2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. The triple step on 7&8 moves me away from my lead, opening my body to the left, encouraging the first twist on count 8

I had to slow this down to 1/2 speed. What songs do you recommend for us beginners to practice to?
@LauraGlaess4 жыл бұрын
Slow and groovy is always good. Here are a few of my favorites that I always play in class. Don't let yourself get lulled into this tempo. Try to gradually push yourself faster - it makes it so much easier to do with a lead, and so much easier to bring to the dance floor. Good luck! kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIqkc3SXdrR-gJY kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYOwaomdiNSWkK8 kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6uzmIylZp50qbM

One question please, I've check many other videos, and they all count to 8, so is swivel only for a 8-count lindy?
@Tamlane32 жыл бұрын
Just a heads up that there's no such thing as '8-count lindy'- Lindy Hop has steps or series of movements that last different quantities of time in the song- 6 beats and 8 beats are common but so are 2 and 4 count moves. It's been written that you can really think about it all in 2s so maybe all Lindy is 2 count? : ) More to your point though: the swivel is takes 2 counts but there's a preparation in the previous count (as noted in some of these comments). The preparation frequently comes from the last part of a triple before. This triple could be the end of an 8 count move (like a swing out) or the end of a 6 count move (like a tuck turn) but the swivel itself is not contingent on the duration of the move that came beforehand. Maybe a simpler way of thinking about it is that swivels most often replace the rock step so any time you could rock step you can find a way to putting in a swivel.

When you swivel, are you also moving your shoulders with your hips or are your hips swiveling, and you shoulders square with your partner?
@LauraGlaess4 жыл бұрын
I try swivel my hips without moving my shoulders, but I also try not to let my shoulders be square with my partner. I want to let them open up as my momentum continues backwards -- I'm actually making a video on this EXACT TOPIC right now!
