Ola, please try D’addario XT and XS. Both are coated with the same thing, but they apply the coating in two ways. The XT feels more like a naked string because they coat the outer metal before wrapping it over the inner core. The XS have a slightly smoother feel because they apply the coating on the metal after wrapping over the inner core is completed - but it’s a slight smoothness and not like Elixirs that are way too slick IMHO. I have a feeling you’d really like the XS best, but please try and compare both. I like XS for electric and XT for acoustic. Btw, NYXL are the identical strings as XT and XS - meaning the coating is applied on top of NYXL for the XT and XS. If you like NYXL, give these two other coated strings a shot! Can’t wait for SWOLA 200! I’ve marked my calendar! 🗓️🤘🏻🎸😎

Elixir have Polyweb (original coating), Nanoweb (next iteration, thinner coating), and Optiweb (newest and thinnest coating). Definitely give Optiweb a try. That’s my favorite. Very bright, I can’t personally feel the coating, and you still get the benefit of them lasting longer

Elixir strings were recommended to me almost 20 years ago and I couldn't turn to any other strings if my life depended on it. I can fully confirm that where the coating gives in and rips after a while of heavy playing, they do get "hairy", but that doesn't affect my experience at all. These strings also aren't among the cheapest out there, but they definitely are among the very best.
@BaurRavenblack5 ай бұрын
I should also mention that during these 20 years I've only had 9 packs of Elixir strings, and getting them hairy isn't as easy as you may think.

Stephen Carpenter is afraid of flying because it will make it harder for him to keep believing the earth is flat. 🤣 Kidding, sorta, lol. I personally really love flying, I find it very relaxing, but I do understand why some people are afraid of it. I was until around 2007, when my dad moved down to FL, and I had to get over it so I could go visit him. I was in the airport bathroom throwing up before my first flight, but once I got on the plane, and kinda surrendered myself to the situation, my feelings quickly changed. I look forward to flying now!

I use the thinner coating Elixirs on my acoustics but wasn't crazy about them on the electrics. On the acoustic the coating really mutes the noise as you change position on the wound strings which is less distracting.
@Ryan_Messenger5 ай бұрын
D'addario for me, Drop C 10-52 on 25.5" scale with a floyd. I used 9-46 for a while but the strings didn't have enough tension for heavy down picking. 10-52 fixed that, big time. They're also on sale, I got 10 packs for $38.50 USD. I know Accountant Ola would like to hear that.
@russellzauner5 ай бұрын
Try taped strings. Nylon is transparent to magnetic fields, so the sound is all core dependent - they don't sound dull like flatwound strings like people think. Bonus, they are super super fast, like someone oiled the strings, like playing buttered butter. I have a set of labella white gold tapes on a bass and they sound just like any other string except because of the tapes they're slightly lighter gauge in sound/tone but not much; it doesn't make it weak sounding at all but in fact a little beefier. The downside: a 25 buck set of bass strings just became a 60 buck set, and that's only 4 strings; I also have 5 and 6 string basses and will have to build sets for them, for once I have to consider which bass I'm putting taped strings on when I decide what strings to put on them instead of just putting the same ones on p much all of them - expensive, but they will last nearly forever and the tone never changes/strings never corrode/oxidize.
@nofagem5 ай бұрын
I am using most of the time Elixir strings - the type "Optiweb" has the regular feeling. I think you tried the "Nanoweb" coating, which is the hairy-type. I have a relatively lot of guitars (12 electric guitars - 7 of them are Solar guitars ;) ), and have to deal with the cost of new strings. Unfortunately I have alien sweats, so one set of regular strings (f.e. Ernie Ball) lasts only one concert. For studio sessions I am using only regular strings, one set / song (in full analog situations we are hearing the difference between regular and coating strings). Except those occasions, the "home guitar playing" would be cost one set / week. And the price for a regular Ernie Ball is 2/3 of an Elixir Optiweb, there is not much difference, and one set of Elixir strings lasts for me 4-5 months. And besides I am very picky with the condition of the strings - regular strings after one week is unplayable for me, there isn't any shining, the sound is terribly blunt. So at home I am ended up only with Elixir Optiweb strings.

Hey Ola, on the subject of coated strings, not sure if you’ve tried the Ernie Ball coated ones. I’ve been using them for years now and love them, they’re great. Hammett joined Metallica when kill em all was done (all the music was already written) he just had to redo the solos. His exodus riffs were on ride the lightning. "Die by my hand" was an exodus song, never recorded because kirk used the main riff & chorus on creeping death. Which ended up being a huge part of metallica's live show. Needless to say, exodus was pissed!

On Elixir strings. I've been playing them for about 6ish years now and they've definitely changed a lot during that time. Around 2015ish I felt they were peak because they remained lively for a long time (I'm talking like a month of regular play) since the pandemic though the coating they use feels a little less...premium? I don't know how to word that lol it's not as nice anymore. That all being said I still think they're the best strings for me. If you want to try them again, I recommend the optiweb coating; those sound and feel the best to me. This is all my personal experience though, results may vary.

good call on the 9 to 46 gauge set of strings, that's my set, it gives me just that little bit more of bottom end stability that the 9 to 42's fails to deliver, since you use em, you know what I mean I'm sure. \m/

1. Kirk bringing his own riffs that were used on an Exodus demo to Metallica is not stealing 2. Do you even know how music works? Riffs are bound to be similar, there's a limited amount of notes and chords you can play, especially in the 80s when people didn't tweak tunings as much. Only songs where they actually "stole" something was on the first 2 albums, from Dave and that Lynyrd Skynyrd riff. 3. Every band has riffs that sound like somebody elses, and it doesn't really matter.
