ps I am an underwater performer and do free diving which is where we hold our breath a long time. Anyone, even someone trained like me, can pass out underwater without any warning from holding their breath. Dry drowning is when you get water in your lungs and drown from it- later. But underwater blackouts are what happen from repeated breath holding. your body has the least amount of oxygen in it for 20 full seconds after you come up for air. So that's probably what happened. Glad he lived!

"Drowning from fluid in the lungs that occurs not during submersion in water, but up to 24 hours after swimming or bathing, defines secondary drowning," says Dr. Fisher. Amber Powell dry drowning is basically when someone can't get oxygen into their system from the air, not necessarily having to do with inhalation of water. A good example is a gas like methane that could displace the oxygen. Or, as in this case the holding of breath lead to hypoxia im assuming?

Dry drowning is when you drown in a about a foot of water or less. A good example of this is a person passing out, and landing face first in like their pet's water dish...or even a puddle. It can also occur if you like dip under the water in your bath tub, and then you come up thinking everything is fine...then the second you do something intense like weight lifting or extensive exercising, you know anything that can cause fatigue... the bath water that you breathed in earlier that day or night will then suffocate you. Now that second one you might have to find the '1000 ways to die' episode to get a better description of that version of dry drowning, but what I wrote is about as simplified as I can make it.

@Lamusicful8 жыл бұрын
No he wouldn't get sued because the fact that the father "dry-drowned" was due to his own stupidity. To sue a hotel company for neglect, it'd have to if a circumstance prevented the dad from getting out of water, and he would need actual outside assistance to help him. The dad let his own ego drown him since apparently losing to his daughter at 8am where there's rarely anyone at the pool would hurt his street cred. But like I said, there's no grounds for suing when the dad endangered himself.

Dry drowning is basically when you've breathed in a lot of water (regular drowning first) and it comes up. The residual water left over can still damage your lungs and fill them with enough moisture for drowning to occur, hence "dry drowning" since it usually happens when a person is out of the water. What probably happened was he drowned initially from the contest (probably was too slow coming up and breathed in water), he managed to get it out, and then the leftover water made him drown again. My mother was a lifeguard and explained it to me after we went to a natural spring where a kid nearly drowned, she saved him, and had to convince his mother to take him to the hospital since he could still dry drown while he was asleep. Yes, you read that correctly. *She had to convince a mother to take her child to the hospital after he nearly drowned and died.*

For everybody wondering what dry drowning is this is the definition : Dry drowning occurs when a child inhales water through the nose or mouth, causing a spasm in the airway and difficulty breathing. ... Secondary or “delayed” drowning happens when a child inhales water into his or her lungs, causing inflammation or edema (swelling).

sWooZie , I looked up "dry drowning" and got this: "Drowning from fluid in the lungs that occurs not during submersion in water, but up to 24 hours after swimming or bathing, defines secondary drowning," says Dr. Fisher. "If the child inhales water into the lungs, the vocal cords can spasm. The drowning is defined 'dry' because it occurs out of the water."
@DejahThoris008 жыл бұрын
Just wanted to go a step further in your explanation. Laryngospasm can occur when water enters the lungs. When that happens, neither water nor air gets into the lungs. That's what we call dry drowning.

Hey Adande! Just to let you know if you dont know what dry drowning is, here's the definition: In cases of dry drowning, the water triggers a spasm in the airway, causing it to close up and impact breathing. Unlike dry drowning,delayed or secondary drowning occurs when swimmers have taken water into their lungs. The water builds up over time, eventually causing breathing difficulties.

If he really wanted to, he was allowed to tell the family to not hold their breaths, because that is a common thing youre told to do by supervisors.

What is dry drowning? The terms "dry drowning" and "secondary drowning" (also called submersion injuries) are often used interchangeably-even by some experts-but they're actually different conditions, says Mark R. Zonfrillo, M.D., MSCE, attending physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. In dry drowning, someone takes in a small amount of water through his or her nose and/or mouth, and it causes a spasm in the airway, causing it to close up. In secondary drowning, the little bit of water gets into the lungs and causes inflammation or swelling that makes it difficult or impossible for the body to transfer oxygen to carbon dioxide and vice versa. Dry drowning usually happens soon after exiting the water, but with secondary drowning, there can be a delay of up to 24 hours before the person shows signs of distress. Both can cause trouble breathing and, in worst-case scenarios, death. More important than the difference between the two-Dr. Zonfrillo says they're both equally dangerous, and in fact, some experts reject the terms altogether, and simply refer to a "spectrum" of drowning-is knowing how to prevent such submersion injuries, and identify when your child is having trouble breathing after a swim.
