I suppose it's because acoustic music adds a graceful, soothing, melodic though to original songs. You can hear the way the syllables flow into each other, instead of the distinctive choppiness and breaks between the words in the other version.

Every time I start to forget why the first arc of SAO is the best anime ever made, I go back to the music. Then I remember all the emotion and power of the story that was so diluted in the other arcs. This video made me remember all the complex emotions that set that show apart: the feeling of powerlessness, of fighting alone in a hostile world, of having to grow strong to protect those you care for, of having a few people to rely absolutely on, of having to trust and be trusted in order to survive, of having to push forward as a community to succeed together.... These are the themes everyone misses when they flame SAO because they are remembering the later arcs which lack such powerful themes. While I concede that SAO as a whole is most certainly not the strongest anime, the first arc when taken alone I think is the most powerful story I have heard.

I find it surprising that you found it "unwatchable" while I found it to be truly artistic. If you want, I would appreciate hearing why it was so disgusting to see. I think it was the fact that it skipped over a lot of the progression of Aincrad (Come on, we wanted to see it all), and introduced a new member to the harem every episode who all have no more involvement in the story after the episode they premiere in. Not to mention Yui's involvement is convoluted and random. Then Kirito breaks the system by having "willpower" and killing Kayaba. Kayaba has to die for some reason, but he manages to make himself some sort of AI, which again, is kinda random. Finally, Kirito is definitely a Gary-Stu character that's just your uninteresting copy paste perfect protagonist. He doesn't get _any_ character development at all during the 4 arcs. At least Asuna finally got a little something in Mother's Rosario, but that was three arcs too late To me, SAO was kinda fanservice. By that, I mean that it caters to cliches and action rather than a good story. It had a great artstyle and soundtrack, and the first two episodes were very good and inviting. After that, it just gets confusing and cliche at the same time - something never good. SAO Abridged, on the other hand, is a masterpiece in making interesting characters, good progression, and a new storyline that _just_ follows the canon version of SAO; not to mention being absolutely hilarious at the same time

Yeah, it was the first anime I saw also, 2 - 3 years ago ish. You have a valid point, the story is underdeveloped and shallow at some parts, but I disagree that the characters who were introduced each episode were useless and later ignored. I think that the reason those characters are important are twofold: firstly they show the vastly different psychological responses of people faced with a situation like SAO, from fear and recoiling to madness, to villainy, to a desire for power; and secondly they show the different roles that people were forced to take on in the game in order for the community to progress, like blacksmith, shopkeeper, info-trader etc.... I honestly feel that the large number of characters we hear about are what lend the story the little depth that it does have!!! I also believe that much of the harem stuff (which I dislike) happens in the later arcs, I think you are letting your memory get a bit fuzzy there. There is still some which is annoying, but not obtrusive in my opinion. Alex Yen You seemed to have some problems with the story's conception as a whole, like the whole willpower thing. I have read all the books, and can say the anime is quite true to them, so any of those problems you have are likely with the book too. What I strongly disagree with you about is the idea that the main character is a one sided character with no character development. Kawahara Reki, who wrote the books, uses a unique style of writing where instead of boring exposition and backstory, he lets the characters define THEMSELVES by their actions and responses to the events around them. We jump into the story with very little idea of who Kirito is as a person, and thus we are forced to learn little tidbits about him based on what he does, be it choosing to help all the other beta testers by taking the title "beater" or by choosing to lie down and take a nap on a beautiful day in aincrad, even as the strongest player who should be helping to prepare for the raid. He is also deeply insecure, awkward, and somewhat paranoid. Neither of these, and many other actions he takes, are actions of a one sided "badass" character. I feel that the character development was constantly going on, if you simply knew where to look!

I honestly felt this version of this OP tug at my heart. Your gentle voice, the beautiful acoustics, it’s enough to make me shed a tear.
