There's a lot of memes about Kayaba's plans and what the SAO plan was and how he "forgot". The main non-spoiler thing you need to know about why Kayaba made the SAO death game is because he's insane, it's been said again and again in the anime and novels. Akihiko Kayaba is a madman. Edit: I need to mention that he didn't forget why he made Aincrad, he said he forgot the reason he wanted to create Aincrad in the first place, he had always just meant for it to be a world for people to live in, without a greater meaning. The greater meaning then came later by means that Kayab explained is because of Kirito.

SAO really suffered from people growing to hate the 'mainstream' shows. In reality it still manages to feel unique even when compared to the hundreds of isekai that followed in its footsteps. Despite it's faults in some of the later seasons it still manages to hold its own.

the reason Kirito joins up with some low-level players is because he's already ostracized himself from the high-level groups. he's a Beater, and nobody wants to play with a dirty Beater. perhaps not having helped others in the earlier weeks also played a part, but he is really just looking for some company, and he thinks that nobody from the clearing group would accept him.

There's actually a scene that wasn't show in the anime, it's when kirito gave the revival item he got to klein, kirito was squished flat by some mob so klein used the item to revive kirito, showing how depressed kirito is after knowing there's no way of bringing the girl back
