SAO has been one of my favorite animes since I was a kid, on one hand I could argue it's nostalgia but as I got older despite being more critical of it I still couldn't dislike it. It's just such an enjoyable show that kinda just hits different compared to most isekais, I think the reason is just because of how much heart it has. I can never understand how people call it overrated so frequently yet it's always shit on... therefore definitely not overrated

Sure SAO has a very weak storyline aside from the fact that it had a squid game kinda plot with games and death, and it had a great take at the game isekai genre when there were very few anime that ventured into this domain. But you should compare it with the anime released during that timeline when developments and anime story Norms were far behind from now. Comparing it with the recent isekais surely would leave a bad taste because the truth is, SAO has such a bad story but the treatment to it was insane. Artwork, music, decent story, decent screenplay, decent fight animations, great voice actors, etc etc.

Most of the better storylines, better characterizations and in general better Anime/manga are from the past, so sao was bad even at that time (imo). It's not over hated, a lot of people love it and a lot of people critize it for clear problems. Overrated, underrated, over hated and similiar are stupids, since they depends on a lot of factor that nobody understand. When you say something is overrated, you say it because: 1 You have a clear opinion on an anime (sao is bad/good) but that's not objective, that's just your opinion that you don't even argue when you just say overrated. 2 Other's opinion on that Anime. 3 "Other's" meaning isn't the same for everyone, since it depends both on your original opinion and on what type of people you find. If you like sao and you want to defend it, you will probably say that it's over hated OR fair rated . If you don't like sao and you want to go against it, you will probably say it's overrated OR fairly rated. Why or? Cuz, like i explained, you can find a lot of post /people who say it's good or you can find a lot of people who think it's bad, so it's impossibile for 2 people to really understand why someone call something overrated/over hated. In short, stop with useless words, sao has a lot of flaws but if you like it I'm happy for you.

One of the main reasons it got hate was because people felt the first season was rushed. The author even mentions in his Light Novel series that he originally planned for SAO to cover each floor seperately like the Progressive Series, but had to cut ALOT of it out because it wouldn't have been finished in time for a competition he entered in. It just so happens that the anime covered the 'cut content' that was his entry into the competition. So by all means you can argue it was rushed, but you have to acknowledge that if he hadn't we wouldn't have the SAO we know today.

I wish they would make more SAO: Progressive type movies or even make a series based off of it cause I personally like the current Progressive ones better than the original. It actually shows the emotions and lives of the people stuck in the game instead of skipping from level 1 to level 60 in 2 episodes.

@@C.P.L I haven't seen the movie, but if it's anything like the Progressive Light Novels/Manga then I agree. Reki has the time (and most importantly, power) to take his time with the characters. I haven't invested too much time into looking at the results of the Progressive movie, but if it went well then I wouldn't put it past them to make another series. It would be long, but worth it in my opinion.

I love Sword Art Online. To this day it's still one of my favorite anime. The story was so intriguing. Getting stuck in a video game where you live was on the line, I was hooked from the beginning. But the story became much more than just about trying to escape a video game. I loved seeing Asuna and Kirito together, the world building and different games they got to explore, dealing with and managing grief, and the most importantly the characters. Two of my best friends used to hate the show since they stopped around the Alfheim arc. I encouraged them to keep watching, especially when they got close to Alicization, and they ended up liking it.

That is damn relatable. Sometimes SAO might feel super slow but then there are times when its just breathtaking story and animation. I suggested the series to my friend when I was in S2 but they were bored by the Alfheim arc. But as I went ahead, I fell in love with SAO Aliciziation and WOU. It is a masterpiece tbh. Most people hate it coz they don't watch it till the end. The story is very heart touching with a sense of adventure and romance. Anyway will there be a series after WOU S2

It was my first anime. I’m 15 and turning 16 in a few months and I remember, at least 2-3 years ago I started getting into anime and Sword Art Online just appealed to me. I’ve always loved swords and just seeing how creative a person can be with each swing, thrust, and slash was just beautiful. Sword Art Online will always hold a special place in my heart. Only thing upsetting me is that I gotta wait until SAO Last Recollection is on sale because I want to have a complete collection of the Alternate Universe games. I got Integral Factor, Fatal Bullet, Alicization Lycoris, and now I gotta get Last Recollection.

You're forgeting one key aspect: when it first came out, SAO was overhyped like crazy. The overhate it gets today was essentially a reaction to that. The reason why it kept going was bad timing: SAO came out exactly when KZbin, social media and video essays exploded, and hating on SAO became one quick and easy way to gain social status, and even make money if you played your cards correctly. Many anitubers started off their careers in no small part thanks to their hatred towards SAO. The creepy part of all of this is that this led to a huge chunk of the anime community to internalize their hatred towards SAO as a starting point, and thus later on a pilar, of their identity as anime fans. Thus why they are utterly unwilling to tone it down even a little; it is literally a threat to their self image.

You have to take these things in their context and when it first came out in 2012, SAO was one of, if not THE most hyped anime since the Big 3, a full decade prior. SAO has a special place in my heart. It's not my favourite but I got into romance genre thanks to this anime. The first SAO and ALO gave me really good romance and fantasy kind of feeling. The story between Kirito and Lisbeth really hit me hard as she gave up her feelings for the better.

This series was among the first few to actually throw people into the world of anime. It aired alongside popular shonen titles, but it really shined on it’s own. People tend to forget this aspect and overshadow it’s accomplishments for original storytelling and fantasy films that we all came to love at some point in our lives. Just to think, “what if” in such a magnificent world where such advanced technology takes the world by storm and allows us to escape to somewhere we can be more alive, was breathtaking to me. Yes, it is a shame that we didn’t get to see more about floor to floor and explore more of this world with the story pacing. Yes, it did have an odd MC who pulls chicks despite being the edgy emo lord that he was. Yes, it was a super cliche the way he suddenly transcended every other player to the point he became the backbone of the game, but I still love this series regardless of all it’s ups and downs. It’s like your first love. You just can’t seem to let go of it.

And any amateur author understands that if you want to balance a character’s relationships, then you incorporate more interaction from both parties. I’d bargain 70% of those conversations comes from the women than the men, such as his friends, Agil and Klein. This is why the cliche expectation and redundant “Kirito’s harem” terms are mentioned. (The author does this purposefully.)

My first experience with SAO was only about a year ago. It wasn't my first isekai, and it certainly wasn't my first anime in general. Even still, I sat down with one of my friends to watch it, because they really liked it, and defended it when I badmouthed it. As the video says, it's not an exceptional series in terms of quality or depth, but I enjoyed it far too much to call it bad. It's now cemented in my memory as nothing but a damn good time.

For me, personally I really liked the first arc, however I didn't really like the alfheim arc due to the sort of incest parts, the "end scene" and asuna becoming a damsel in distress instead of an actual character.

@@MahiMahi-lo4xo the Alo arc was all around bad, the other stuff you mentioned isn't nessasaraly bad, or in context, bad writing. sure some of it's abit "edgy" but their are redeemable parts in the arc, and some people are just to sensitive for the "detestable" stuff(GGO finalie and r*pe scene.) as for those characters, i am unsure what problems you have with them, unless it's in relation to sudo-harems(" harems" that the ml has a chosen fl, but others still "flock" to him) which all I can say is that is a preference thing, and shouldn't be considered detestable.

Only criticism I have for Sao is the inclusion of harem even when kirito is committed and the repeated R-scenes. Alicization was top notch in terms of quality animation and fights. Especially the war of underworld.

I can confirm that SAO was the first anime I saw. Believe it or not, I first saw SAO when I was like 6 because it was available on Netflix, and back then I’d just watch whatever I thought looked interesting on Netflix.

The first 12 episodes of SAO remain a classic for me. Not saying the other seasons were bad (and I really love the emotion in some of the 2nd season content) but I just wish those 12 episodes had been longer and given us more time in that beautiful little world
